Redmund kills another deer

    If the owner can shoot the deer for eating his crops I can't see why the authorities would be concerned so long as Redmund was on his own property. By the way, the whole Northern Virginia area has a tremendous deer overpopulation problem.

    Zip and Lola (I think it was those two) ran after a deer once but that was about it. They showed up 3 minutes later....

    My 2 only get squirrels and birds. All dead in the yard except the dead squirrel proudly displayed in the living room, the live bird let loose in the house, and the not quite dead squirrel in the kitchen–-the down side of doggie doors!

    I can't imagine a take down of a deer. That would scare the crap out of me. One well placed kick and that would be the end of your dog.

    My theory is that after the first encounter he figured out the pointy ends and avoids them. After the deer enter the deer fenced vineyard they are basically captive animals and have no where to run. That is the only way he can get a deer.

    Good dog Redmund he saves money for you no kibbles for that boy he hunts his own meal :D On a more serious note hide the carcass and don´t tell anyone or Redmund might be in some serious trouble;)

    As Redmund's breeder, I am not really happy that he is risking his life in this pursuit. However, it is pretty amazing that a 25 pound dog can take on a 150 pound deer.

    If you've ever watched a pack of them, it's truly an awesome site. It's like a telepathic dance. But truly amazing taking down a deer by himself.

    I'm definitely no expert in this area, and it's just a thought…but I know chronic wasting disease is becoming more and more common in deer.

    Redmund would have to ingest a different part of the deer than his rump :) but it's something to consider.

    WOW!!

    But then … when you think about it ... they were/are used in Africa/Congo for hunting!

    The one book I have said the owners tied a shelled gourd around their necks, filling the gourd with pebbles/stones so as to be able to 'hear' the basenji and not shoot them, shooting the prey instead.

    My Max got hold of a large raccoon in my backyard one night when he was about 2. My boyfriend at the time went out and saw the raccoon on its back with Max on his throat. He tried to separate them, but it was too late for the raccoon. I've kept my dog door down at night ever since. The two Bs I have now seem to be fearless and much more instinctively predatory than Max was–but fortunately I haven't had any raccoons etc in the backyard....yet.

    Wow. That is amazing. Manning has only been successful at catching birds. Although he did try for a bat the other day that had made it into the apartment. As of yet neither Manning or the cats are very good bat catchers. A deer is impressive!

    You do realize that since Redmund has been a succesful deer hunter, he will continue to pursue them. The comment about CWD should be taken seriously as should the comment that he is engaging in risky behavior. Yes these dogs were hunters in Africa, but this isn't Africa and these dogs aren't wild but our companions.

    Wow! Somehow, I never got emails letting me know I had responses to this thread and just assumed there weren't any. But now that I'm back in the loop, I did want to thank everyone for their feedback and provide some thoughts of my own. That makes me laugh about the rescue person who wouldn't let young families or lawyers adopt her dogs. :-D I can understand her rationale from both perspectives. It's a compelling argument on her part about lawyers, but not all lawyers are the same, of course. I know a lot of extremely busy lawyers in large firms who struggle to hit their billable hour requirement each month. They're machines instead of people, and I wouldn't even let them dogsit my babies for fear of neglect. That's not my situation, fortunately. The young family part will be, but I've been thinking really carefully on how I'll balance this when the time comes. My dogs are my first children, and I would hire as many trainers as needed and try as many alternatives as I could before I would give them up. Unfortunately, I don't think a lot of people have that mindset about their dogs. :( I would absolutely be open to the idea of having the breeder choose a puppy for us based on their experience and prediction as to personality. All basenjis are gorgeous to me, and as long as the markings aren't completely off-base and I can get a tightly-curled tail (I've seen that the Avongaras can be lacking in this area, and I need a cinnamon bun in my life), personality is the most important thing. I wouldn't nitpick it to death. I'll have to decide on a breeder at some point, and I'd love one who's relatively local so I could visit. The man I got Penny from had great pet Basenjis that he bred… I'd like to go with a more reputable breeder this time around. At the very least, he tested for Fanconi. I can be grateful for that, as all is well so far and I more than likely dodged a bullet when I ended up with such a fantastic dog. My plan would be to decide and get on a waiting list far enough in advance that if there were a couple litters that just didn't produce what my family and I were looking for, we wouldn't be waiting forever. In short, what I'm banking on is that the right pup with the right personality will fit in pretty flawlessly. I know what sets my basenji off in other dogs, and I'm hopeful that I could find one that would suit her and suit our home. Daisy certainly worked out well for her, and I'd love to have that same success again. I've done three puppies in my lifetime, and all of them have grown up to be well-adjusted adults. I know what it takes, and I know it's hard work. I would never go the route of having an infant and a puppy at the same time (isn't THAT actually the definition of insanity?? ;) ), but I am still trying to shoot somewhere in the next 3-4 year range so my two aren't past ten and too old to handle a puppy.

    Funny funny story - after the fact of course. Although we do occasionally get woodchucks (same as groundhogs for those of you in the eastern states) and lots of other creatures, I haven't seen one in quite awhile here. However, my first basenji caught a young muskrat/marshrat who was stupidly trying to cut through our yard and treated him just like he did his toys - " few quick snaps and the stuffing started flying".

    @wizard: EL D really only gets "into trouble" when he wants my attention. Then he'll grab whatever (and I do mean whatever) is close at hand/mouth and parade it past me before running away like hell. :D Oh yes, Trixie brings me things all the time that she knows she is not supposed to have!!! Its a big game between her and I. A tad bit frustrating at times lol! She also follows me from room to room watching my every move. Especially when I am cleaning or putting things away. New cupboard doors to snoop around in I suppose. They are such curious dogs. My other girl dog Josie could care less what I am doing. She just wants her food, water and her everyday petting from me.

    my thanks to all of you for your wonderful advice - i will take everything that you all have said into consideration before making a decision - however my wife and i have decided that our grieving over the loss of our 4 year old is not over yet so we are going to delay any decision until we can get past this point - with that in mind, and realizing how difficult these discussions have been for me, i am going to unsubscribe myself from this site until such time as we can come to better terms with our situation - again, my thanks to all of you for trying to help - Manny
