Basenjis scream hours and hours after death one of them….

    Hello,
    I've got big problem: I have 2 basnejis (10 years old dogs - brothers) which after sudden death of third one (found dog-girl), they scream hours and hours when they are home alone… I have never this kind a problems - I care a lot's of found dogs, cats...they stay home for 6-8 hours without problems...

    Now I take them everywhere - work, shopping, go outs... But I have to think about my poor neighbours...
    What I have to do??? I don't know what to do...
    Any suggestions are very welcome.

    I have never had the problem…. and I have lost 3 elders over the last year.... I would not have any idea what to tell you....

    I heard screaming when I was at the rescue breeders house like I've never heard before. It was one of her Basenjis in the house in a crate. It was a shrilling scream and it was loud. I was there with Buddy and it was their usual time to play in the yard and it didn't like it. Mine have howled but this was screaming.
    When one of mine died in 2007 the other didn't seem bothered at all about it even though they were together for 13 years.
    Just spend some time with them like you're doing and hopefully they'll get over it.

    Sorry to hear about your problem. It sounds like this is the way your two Basenjis are expressing their grief. I cant think of anything to advise, only that perhaps with lots of love and care which you are giving they will settle again with time.

    There are homeopathic remedies which are supposed to help with grieving and seperation etc. I'll try looking up which ones for you.

    Bachs flower remedies are very good and over here we have a company called Dorwest herbs who do a whole range of homeopathic/herbal remedies.

    One of my friend with Bs recently had to have one PTS so she took ALL her Bs to the vets with the ill dog so they would understand what was going on. Not sure if this has helped the remaining Bs with their grief or not!

    I might recommend a DAP collar. It's mostly for puppies, but it should still help them feel a little more relaxed.

    Never had this problem w/dogs, since I only have one and she's my 1st. However, I did have a cat (he had claimed my older female cat as "mommy")… When the "Mommy cat" died, my younger boy would meow/howl all night. I swear he woke me up at least once every hour through the night! This went on for two weeks... I was worn out!!! I hate to admit that I let him outside in total exasperation. I lived in the country in the middle of a field. He loved being free for about three days, then got bit by a snake (he didn't make it). I blame myself, I shouldn't have put him out, but I was so frustrated. Maybe I should have gotten him another older female cat, I just don't know what I should have done...

    I wish I could be of more help. Surely time will help heal their pain! Hopefully you can be more patient than I was. Was your female the alpha/pack leader? Maybe they don't know what to do without her leadership...

    I sometimes use Rescue Remedie on one of my dogs before I go in the ring as he is a bit excitable. It does work but you need to make sure you don't over do it as it can give them an upset tummy. YUK!!

    I just bought something the other day, at the petstore, it is spray that you use around the area where your pet will be, so you do not use it on your animal. It is called "Comfort Zone spray with D.A.P. for Canine Bahevior Modification". It work wonders while we spend over 4 hours each way in the car this weekend. The dogs dod great, and one of those dogs get sreally carsick, she did great..Otis clonked out and slept almost the whole way. Something like that might work. I feel for you and for the dogs, it most be so very hard not knowing how to help..

    Besides D.A.P., another thing that might help is Lavender oil. Don't use a lot, because it is pretty strong. A couple drops on a blanket in a room and it may help with the calming.

    Seems to me that a sad dog, who is mourning the loss of a companion, does NOT need to be drugged. Drugs to "dull the pain" of emotion is a human thing but not a dog thing. I can't imagine that any wild dog, or animal, would of its own accord eat a sedative plant when it was grieving.

    Just my opinion, two cents' worth, and resistance to drugging our pets!

    Rescue Remedy – at least the one sold here in the US -- has alcohol, so if you must use it, please do so with caution and sparingly. DO read the ingredients.

    Is she flying with you or in cargo? I would suggest getting a different type of crate and start over with training. (hopefully that will get rid of some/many negative connections she has with the current crate.) Crate Games dvd has some excellent suggestions for getting a dog into a crate and liking it. If you can't get another crate, you could you take the current crate apart and do some crate games then put it back together and start over with the start of the crate games. Go slowly. If you're thinking about drugs, you will absolutely need to do one or more "test" runs before the flight.

    i walk the lab and isis at the same time one on hand and one on the other, the lab seem to have a major drive to sniff out anything and track blindly and of course isis will be doing the same, the b is easier to control cause she lighter but the m1 tank of the lab well.. we've came across little furry friends on our nitely walks i need to stay very focus on my surroundings, one thing the b does if theres someone walking behind us doesnt matter how far , she walk ahead stop and turn to look back, she'll keep doing this repeatedly like she warning me these something there,im sure its instinct on her end to,of course i confirm whats shes doing but yeah those b's dont miss a trick

    I have had that same situation with Ayo,only with him it's usually with large dogs. we only have one area at the park here, all together, small dogs and big dogs. When he goes in he always chooses one big dog , runs up to him and starts growling. Sometimes he stops very quickly, or the other dog growls back and it stops or it escalates , usually because the other dogs owner freaks out. He is fine around small dogs. And I am pretty sure that he is fine with most dogs, that if I leave them they will work it out, but I'm afraid to let it play out because bigger dogs can really hurt him, and also because usually the other owner freaks and intervenes making everything worse. Sooo, Ayo has started to get a bit of a rep.. The basenji rep!! I usually wait till only small dogs are in…

    I've hiked off leash at numerous areas here in the SF Bay area. They love it! Any there was only 1 area that was a problem with ticks. To me after 30 years hiking with them it's the best way to establish a great relationship with them. There's no two ways about it, Basenjis love hiking adventures.

    Simply, she needs to come out to a practice. There are a few things you can do to prepare your dog. The best is to play with her with a lunge whip. This is a buggy whip, (horse tack shop), strong fishing pole, etc. Approximately 6' long, with 6' of strong cord tied to it. And on the very end, tie a white plastic bag (tall kitchen sacks) I'm not a big fan of using fur, as some lunge whips are sold. Now the fun, use the whip to move the bag about on the ground. It's a game, catch it. It's important for you to challenge her to catch it. Move it about her feet. After a while it will be challenge to keep it away form her. You do need to let her succeed, if she can not catch it, she’ll give up. Always end the game after 10 minutes or less, leaving her wanting more. Do not play when there are distractions, or it’s to hot. We add this later after she has strong desire to rip up those plastic bags. One done, you probly be cleaning up pieces of plastic. The true test, is when you can come home and leave a plastic grocery bag on the floor with ice cream, and she attacks the bag, and leaves the ice cream alone. :)
