Hydrogen Peroxide

My basenji that loves to get into trouble was successful. He managed to get a
closed door open and eat some inedible items such as a cork, anylon cord and a telephone cord. I could not account for all the material with what I picked up from the floor.

The vet suggested that I administer hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting.
I was a little concerned that it took over an hour for the dog to vomit. :eek:

Is this a normal time interval? Or does this dog have a stomach of iron?
How much hydrogen peroxide does a basenji usually take?

2 days later and no signs of internal damage. But I sure would like to know why it took so long for him to vomit.

Rich, when I have used HP, it has only taken a few minutes for stuff to come back up. I think the longest was about 20 minutes. I don't know why it would take two hours. I am glad it worked though

How old was the bottle? Was it new? Freshly opened? Even if it had not been open but sat on your shelf for a long time it probably became stale/flat. The bubbles is what makes the dog vomit - no bubbles, no vomit. I suggest you have a fresh bottle of HP on hand. If you open a bottle that bottle will become stale for vomiting purposes within a month. If you have a bottle which has not been opened I would think the shelf life for good quality vomiting bubbles would be 6 months.

You want 3% HP. You give 1 teaspoon orally PER 10 pounds. You can repeat every 15-20 minutes for up to 3 repeats. After that - you are doing more harm then good and should perhaps go to the vets office so they can induce vomiting with apomorphine.

I sure am glad you guys are here. Someone left a roll of Girl Scout Thin Mints in the TV room last night and my dog got into them. I think she only ate one but I didn't want to take a chance. I knew she ate at least one because she had very minty breath. I put one and a half tsps of peroxide in a little bowl and she guzzled it down. Well, seconds later she didn't have minty fresh breath anymore. She had just eaten breakfast. Funny, the dog food was pretty much unchewed but the cookie was in tiny bits. I guess I'll wait a couple of hours and give her breakfast again. I made her stay in the kitchen through the whole ordeal and the other B just stood there at the gate staring like !!What the heck did she do to you??!! Now, just minutes later they are running around like nothing happened. It seems that I'm the only one upset by the whole ordeal. Crazy dogs!! Gotta love 'em!

Yup. She jumped up on the couch next to me and just drank it. Pretty weird. Bet it never works again and I hope I never have to do it again. The look on her face was one of shock a few seconds after she drank it.

I had to give Piggy HP for plant eating once and she drank it willingly too. It was only about a five minute interval before she vomited, which she did about five times. I wonder if how much she drank had to do anything with it? Maybe some of the stomach contents absorbed it or something.

I have to agree… I'm EXTREMELY grateful for this forum & the advice I've gleaned from more experienced dog owners. At the last coursing trial I had a chocolate covered granola bar. I ate half, rewrapped it & left it on the dashboard. I jumped out of the bar for just a moment on our way out to take a picture of Lola's scores. I left her out in the car & when I got back in less than 30 seconds later, she had eaten the other half of the granola bar. Cocoa wasn't a main ingredient, but I didn't want to take a chance. I ran into a local grocery store, bought a bottle & poured 2 capfuls down her mouth (didn't take the time to see if she would drink it willingly). The vomiting was almost instantaneous... less than 2 minutes later. She threw up 5 times in just a couple of minutes & when she was done looked up at me like "What are we doing standing around? Weren't we driving somewhere?"
Making your dog throw up because you were dumb enough to leave something dangerous out is now on my top 5 list of most horrible things you might ever have to do in life. The look on Lola's face was so pitiful when she was throwing up!

This is good stuff to know. I'll be sure to keep a bottle or two of HP around in case it's ever needed. Cheap insurance.

Hydrogen peroxide (H202) breaks down into water (H20) and oxygen if the bottle has been opened for awhile.
I can't see my B willingly drinking this stuff. I have a syringe with a blunt tip for when I have to squirt something in his mouth.

I feel redeemed that I was not the only person who had to administer Hydrogen Peroxide.
