Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Hi everyone, my 4-year old Frida (tricolor, spayed) has lost almost all of her fur on her belly, chest and now even throat and inner side of the legs. Also the sides of her torso are starting to discolor and the hair is thinning there as well. we have been to the vets and all her test are coming back negative, or normal. Yesterday we were at vet-dermatologist and she says it's probably alopecia X, even though basenjis are not a typical breed to get it. She did draw blood from her again to test for the sex-hormones balance, but that was rather on my insistence... The skin is otherwise completely healthy - no redness, soreness or itching.
Did anyone else ever had this problem with their basenji and how did you deal with it - should i consider dressing her in thin layers on hot days to prevent sunburn?
    Any advice would be welcome!

    thank you

Yes, please do let us know. Personally I never have to deal with fleas but use a product called 'Billy No Mates' which is a herbal mix obtainable from www.csjk9.com I'm not sure whether they ship abroad but do have a look at the details on their site.

@YodelMa: … and supplement generously with fresh Omega 3 ...with a quality Omega 3 supplement–the good stuff isn't cheap, but everyone remarks on my pack's shiny coats. Plus it's an anti-inflammatory, helps keep them young & healthy. As sighthounds, B's have less oily skin that's prone to dryness in winter climates! YodelMa - can I ask you what the brand is of the Omega 3 and where you get it (I'm in B.C.)? When it comes to my Kipawa, I'll pass on my lattes to make sure he gets products that are quality.

First thing to do is see a Vet and make sure it is nothing medical, like mites… which they can determine with a skin scrapping at the office.... and work from there....

Well, he's always licking himself down there… lol... I never really check to see specifically what he is licking, but now I'll watch him like a hawk..
