Nose Hair Loss

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I am writing about my dog Nulla. Recently we noticed that the tip of her nose has lost most of the hair growing on it. She hasn't had any accident or episode to her nose. She hasn't been outside for prolonged periods of time (it is cold here!) I am not sure what to think of it. We haven't been to the vet about it yet. Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else's B?

    Thanks!

  • How does the underlying skin look? How old is nulla. Loss of hair on the nose can be so many things from a form of alopecia, to mites, to something bit the dog and it didn't show up but now hair loss.

  • The underlying skin is black. Nulla is 3 and 1/2. We are going to take her to the vet. We've been looking at pictures and it is incredibly noticeable the difference. She has no hair loss anywhere else on her body…

  • Cara got a bald spot on her side. I never noticed a bite of any kind or ANY inflammation etc. I can only assume SOMETHING bit her and that was what happened. No hair was regrowing, so I started putting neem extract on it. It was, btw, about the size of a quarter so very noticeable. It has finally, after about 5 mos, regrown.

  • It sounds like one of my Basenji's (Bungwa) ears. He is losing hair in patches on his ears. I first put it down to him pushing his head through the wire fence but thinking back one of his predecessors had the same but also his nose as you describe. It's a very long time ago and i can't remember how we trated it nor what causes it. I'm off to the vet with him next week for a diagnosis and treatment.

I'll be interested to hear what your vet thinks.

@dogo-0 said in 8 month old basenji pup with hair loss on the ear tips: when I scratch the tip of her ears, it looks like dirt is coming off If you live in a particularly cold climate, the edges of your pups ears may have a touch of frostbite. That would explain the dark skin cells that are sloughing off when you scratch or rub at her ear tips. Try to protect her ears in the cold. Be gentle when you rub the ends. Depending on the severity, consult your Veterinarian, antibiotics may be needed.

We did a biopsy a week into it and it was not cancerous, so waiting for the bump to go away was the only other option. I though surgery would be too intrusive in the nose area. Kiya had to endure two weeks of wearing the cone day and night to prevent her from scratching her nose. She seems to get all kinds of things around her nose, just recently she got bitten by a bee nosing around in the grass and was back into the cone for a week.

Could she be scratching?…I have one that when she scratches her neck, even a little, she gets a reaction like you are explaining. It is a bad flea year here for us...so she also is super reactive if she gets a flea bite, then she will start scratching, and get a hot spot, like immediately...

@curlytails: Interesting. Does anyone know why winter nose happens? I don't think it gets wintery enough where I'm at to observe any difference… I wonder if its similar to human skin color & in the winter they just have less exposure to the sun & their nose lightens like we become more pale in the winter?

I prefer a stick since it will dry much faster. Using a lotion or cream allows your dog to lick it right off which defeats the purpose. Make sure its water proof. A small amount will not harm your dog. I've checked with my vet and others and they all agree. My boy has a section on his nose which is a light pink. Anytime he goes into the sun it turns a bright red. I know its got to be painful. The sunblock has really helped.
