Anyone know this breeder?

  • We just had a friend die and instead of flowers, they requested that a donation be made to a cause relating to animals. So…I'll donate $50 also.

    Pat

  • I guess this means we only need $300 more to get this dog out of hock.

After seeing the Oprah show, it's REALLY hard for me to not go out there and start adopting every dog I see. However, I simply don't have the resources at this time but rest assured, when I DO have the resources I'll have a backyard full of B's! I have $50 bucks, though, so I'll happily donate to the cause of getting this dog into BRAT's hands.

  • I'll donate $50 also!

  • Well, don't forget me!! I can kick in $50. So that is $150…but by the time we trickle up to $400, he may be gone....or maybe, just maybe she will have called Sharron back and turned him over!! {fingers and toes all crossed!}

  • we're up to $200 now, right? I think jazzys mom and i posted simultaneously…

  • That's actually $200. We're halfway there. :)

    We have me, TuckerVA
    BasenjiDiva
    Tayda_Lenny
    JazzysMom

We have BRAT represented here. Can this person tell us how we can setup a donation link via PayPal for this dog on BasenjiRescue.org somehow? Either that or tell us where to send the checks?

Does anyone know how to get in touch with Sharon Hurlbut? Perhaps she can broker the deal with the person selling the dog since she's already contacted them?

It feels good to be DOING.

And you can always call and "offer" the 200 instead of trying to get the entire 400.00, they might be willing to do it for that price

  • I really wish I could help but $50 is a bit steep for me right now. If some sort of account is set up I could probably chip in like $10-15. Sorry it can't be more!

  • Cindy is a BYB.
She sells a sh*t load of puppies all over the country.
Since she is irresponsible and does NOT take her dogs back.
A ton of dogs she bred ended up in Colorado Basenji Rescues.
We are constantly re-homing her dogs here in CO…very frustrating indeed.

Careful Steffie….you might hurt somebody's feelings! No bad talking breeders, no matter how many of their dogs you have rescued.....

    <dripping with="" sarcasm="">

off to slap my own hands....</dripping>

  • Let me know if you guys set up an account, I can chip in $10 or so, like Nina $50.00 is steep for me right now (My GI Bill is about to run out so I will soon have to start paying for college so I am saving where I can!). Let me know, I would like to help.

  • Ditto for me as well. :)

  • $10-$15 from me.

  • So we're at $250 or so. Try offering that.

  • Well, I need to know first that there's a way to set this up and actually have money available before even attempting to set up a deal. I mean, what if I call and she accepts the $250, and for whatever reason the money doesn't come through? Not a chance I can afford to take.

I'm going to email Sharron to see if BRAT has a system or can come up with a system. I have a Paypal account, but can't assume that everyone wants to send their money to my private account. I know I'm trustworthy, but let's face it…you all don't.
Let's see if/when I hear from her, and then if it's feasible, we can call and make the offer.

  • I have paypal also. Perhaps we can use the brat paypal donation link and just specify what it is for. I think Paypal allows you to make some notes when you submit a payment. At least I'm pretty sure it can be setup that way.

All we need to know is where to send the money. :)

I've emailed Sharron and hope to hear something very soon!

I'd really love to see this happen.

  • If Sharon or someone can contact BRAT and let them know we're coming, they can, I presume, simply give us a code (and I don't mean something from the Ovaltine Secret Decoder, something like "Pausin' on Clausin!") for the particuliar deal and let us know what it is. The donation to BRAT via credit card (through Network for Good) allows you to designate what the donation is for.

It reads like this once you click the "Donate Now" button:

    "Designation (Optional)
To designate your donation for a specific fund or purpose, please enter a description of how you'd like your donation to be used."

I think this would be pretty simple. :)

  • Just so you guys know…I am pretty sure BRAT has an absolutely no purchase rule for rescuing dogs. So you may have to go about this a slightly different way, and have a non-BRAT related person purchase the dog, and then give it to BRAT.

If BRAT got into the position of purchasing dogs, it could lead down a slippery slope of people holding their dogs hostage until rescue met their price, kwim? In fact, I think people that are surrendin dogs are encouraged to make a donation to help cover the cost of vetting and such.

I am sure Sharron will clear this up. But I though I would give you a heads up.

  • And I still think you all if determined to buy this dog, call and offer a lower price….

@Rob5098 I don't in your area. Like Pat suggested, you can go here: https://www.basenji.org/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=111&Itemid=94 Check NY and NJ and any other state close enough for a drive.

@Channing's_Girl: I bought my pup from Mary Alaniz. She said his parents had been tested. He will be a year old in 5 days. So far no health problems. She was very nice and told me if I have any questions or need advice to contact her. I researched the breed and breeders for over a year before I bought one. I think if the dogs are well bred (in terms of genetics) and are healthy that it is oK if they are not AKC registered, especially if you are not interested in showing and are going to have them fixed anyways. Also, her dogs are pets to her, not just a dollar sign, she seems to really care about them, they live in her house, unlike some breeders who keep dogs in kennels. Good to hear. I bought my Basenji from her a couple years back as well. I got the runt of that litter (the last one left) but she's doing just fine.

@listeme: Knowing how fast technology changes and improves, I'd be hesitant to sign up for a program like this if I weren't going to be using it in a couple of years or less. Remember VCRs? Cassette tapes? Telephones that attach to walls? :D lol. ya i suppose you all are right. At first i thought about it, but i dont know. I guess its still a good thing if you have to do more than one chip in a dog. and i think they said the microchips are good forever (whether thats possible or not) I guess its still worth it for me, IMO. Since rescue and my personal dogs. I can use that amount of chips (in rescue) within a year or two. So…i think its a good deal. Whether it is or not...

Pam Geoffroy [Eldorado] is President of the BCOA and Debbi Hauri [Mata Hauri] is a longtime Basenji breeder. I am sure you would love a pup from either of them :-)
