The Worst thing your dog ruined!!!

Basenji Talk
  • Chance only really likes to eat paper so I have to keep my homework away from him or else it will be destroyed.
Kiya now likes to eat wood or chew door knobs. I know she is teething but c'mon….she is like a little termite chewin away at the corners of my brand new house!!!! EEEKKKKKK

  • I had a down winter coat with a snap-on fur trim around the hood. One day, I carelessly threw it on the bed instead of hanging it up. The next thing I see is Senji with the fur trim in his mouth, leaping with glee at his "kill" and then hiding behind the sofa to rip it to shreads. Otherwise, he usually just rips paper…especially the kind in gift bags or paper towels.

  • Blaze has done the sofa thing, but he zipped the covers back up. We didn't notice until mom had her women's club over for tea and they sunk into the springs!
He also ate $7000 worth of blinds in the hot tub room, just to get a fly. He was so proud of himself when we came home and saw all the blinds chewed off at the two feet mark…. Dad was not so impressed...
My brother's signed Nirvana Unplugged CD, just after Kurt Cobain killed himself...
The worst, which I can laugh about now, was the AAA battery. The x-rays showed the battery, a knife handle, the head of a toothbrush and three wierd figurines. After sifting through his poop, to ensure he passed the battery, the awkward figurines turned out to be lego men. :)
oh, and the upstairs carpet. Walking up the stairs onto the lush, light grey carpet... to find puddles of blue ink from a pen...
Nothing so far in my house (knocks on wood), only the parent's house, as a puppy...

  • How are Chance and Kiya getting along?… You have not posted much?

  • The worse thing Cory has chewed on is the corner of the chair rail by the dining room window. We had a chair by the window so she could watch the cars, people, etc and apparently she thought of the wood as the popcorn to go along with the show. She has chewed up plenty of pens and some old sheets used as crate bedding. She also chewed up the antenna of an old cell phone. Robyn warned us that Jayden came from her "termite litter" but he has proven to be more of a boll weevil. He has chewed holes in (and rendered unwearable) a number of items of clothing including two of DH's shirts and one of my sweaters. He chews on the inside of his plastic crate. He has eaten several large chunks from the outside of his plastic crate and is working on Cory's crate as well. He has gotten his lower jaw lodged in the handle of a metal basket that he was chewing on.

Our last dog, a Lab, was the worst (best?) at destroying things. She destroyed two new cabinet doors and chewed through 2 automobile seat belts (not cheap to replace). She ate every catalog and telephone book she could find. (She loved the binding….I don't think I want to think about what is in the glue that made it so desirable.) She also ate a couple of beloved childhood momentos. She was good preparation for having a basenji!

Door knobs? Door KNOBS? The puppy chews door knobs?

    Just how tall is she?

  • Well, my sweetie Sahara, has chewed up plenty. Not so bad now days, but I did find a toothbrush in her bed this morning. DH loves to leave it on the side of the bathroom basin, even he knows she will get it, duh!!! We have gotten alot better putting things up out of her reach, we learned that pretty fast but not quite fast enough. She chewed the wood on 2 of my favorite chairs that DH bought me for Christmas (he has to repair them, in the attic for now) new coffeetable, new endtables, but by far the worst was she broke a tooth off of a top plate of dentures,($100) repair and bent into $600 eyeglasses, we were not happy campers. You Gotta Love Them!!!!

bitter apple!!! If she doesn't respond to it sprayed on the woodwork, then give her a spray right in the mouth…likely she won't want to go anywhere near it anymore. You have to reapply the bitter apple about every other day so it keeps working.

Wow! I think this might be a winner!!! I am so glad he is okay…how did he survive the knife handle????

  • Lessee here….our dogs haven't dont too much damage. Lots of underwear...lots of socks...at least one pair of jeans (one was brand new!)....I think the most expensive damage was done by Querk in one of his fits about being closed away from girls in heat. He ripped out a piece of vinyl siding off of the house (the J channel that all the horizontal pieces fit into), luckily we were doing construction on the house, and our guys were able to fix it easily, and not too expensively. And then he also ripped away about 2ft x 3ft of paneling in the kitchen. We haven't fixed that yet, as we are planning to re-do the kitchen eventually anyway (he must have known). Of course he has also destroyed a few plastic kennels, and plastic pans that go in wire kennels, and whatever fabric he could pull into a kennel.

  • Gee EL D must be a saint - the only thing he's done is to chew the edges of an afghan I got for christmas (and gave to him anyway), the handle off the paper grocery bags, napkins, and his obedience class ribbon.

  • Gosh - after Knipper's post - I shouldn't complain. But I have had to replace some pricey items: Sofa; 4 bras, assorted underware, and Daisy's latest craze is pillows. All bedroom doors must be closed and sofa pillows put up high out of the way unless in human use. I'm shaking my head because - well - what's next???

  • LOL we were lucky it was just the handle, we never found the blade though… Blaze did the underwear thing, and Mom reminded me that he ripped up an entire section of underground sprinklers, the cost about $2100 to fix... He also ate the roast nettings, including the metel pieces, and two and a half bolts off of his kennel, yup, that one half is still holding on...

But seriously, he's calmed down since he turned twelve... that makes two years of peace...

  • oh, and he also ate the entire middle out of my brother's queen size mattress, right where he slept! LOL

  • @Barklessdog:

What thing has your dog destroyed that sank your heart.

My basenji has taught me to be a very good Buddhist. By that I mean I've learned not to place so much value on material possessions (apologies to any actual practicing Buddhists out there…I'm just using this as an example) :)

Here's my funny story from just this past weekend.

She-Ra loves my DVD's. She also loves underwear and socks (I'm guessing I'm not alone on that one!). I don't fret so much about her chewing up a DVD case as I do her getting to the DVD inside of it and splintering it and hurting herself. So I tell my wife I've had enough…we need to get a nice cabinet to put the DVD's in that closes and is hard for her to even nudge open. Let's go shopping.

My wife agrees and we find a really nice unit that looks great in our house. My wife brings up the point that she's tired of fighting the dog for clothes from her old chest of drawers (which is low to the ground and an open invite). While we're there, we should look for better bedroom furniture...

You guessed it, one cabinet, two chests, two nightstands later, we've got a completely retooled place...all for the sake of the dog! :)

I made my wife hug her when we got back home. LOL.

Nice furniture though, so I'm not complaining. :)

I'm still not sure my wife wasn't putting the dog up to eating my DVD's either… hee hee...

  • lol theres always a catch ;) you just fell into the trap she set for you.. :D

  • Over all the years, hmmm, lets see: a latex king sized bed turned into chunks of foam, carpet ripped up in a rental house, not too many shoes, much underwear, 4 couch cushions, 3 pairs of expensive perscription glasses, the collar of my favorite leather jacket, 4 or 5 nice leather purses, and oh yeah, the complete leather interior of an MGB-GT (back in the 70's), including the visors and headliner. I still think Knipper "wins" !

    That is quite a list!

I forgot to ad our also destroyed two retainers, and chewed a hole through our living room carpet down to the wood within a few minutes.

Dental retainers are never safe and always fair game, like dirty underwear.

  • In a little over 18months…mine have destroyed:

-Dh's Xmas gift DVD collection of Seinfeld
    -4 Couch pillows
-3 Couch Cushions (what you actually sit on!)
-1 Couch arm (no more armrest)
    -2 Cell phones
    -1 tv remote
    -1 toothpaste tube
    -1 leather ottoman
-1 pair of shoes (yes both left & right, to be consistent of course )
-1 meatloaf dinner, turkey sandwich, slice of pizza, foccacia bread (counter surfing )
    -1 shampoo bottle (travel size)
    -2 tooth brushes
-several tampons (couldn't figure out how many in the aftermath)
-too many men's shoelaces (little girl has a shoelace fetish on DH's shoes)

I think that just about covers it :D ...luckily some has been subconciously blocked out of memory.

  • I also forgot that my dog killed a rare dwarf conifer graft I just planted.

He comes up to me with it's little body in his mouth all limp. That was a $50 plant. I tried saving it, but it was dead within a day or so.

Another one of those sense of humor incidents. He was so proud when he brought it to me. I could not be mad at him, he was so cute.

I have had a couple stained glass made, but there is normally a 3-4 month lead time as the artists are already booked up for Xmas this yr. Most of the artists on etsy will be booked this late in the yr, I had two quilts and a needle felt made a couple yrs ago and I placed my order in June in order to guarantee Xmas delivery. If you have a nice photo, there is a company called treasure knits that does wonderful woven afghans out of a photo with about a one week turn around. I have had both afghans and pillows made from photos as xmas gifts from them and they do great work.

The only sweat glands on a dog are on the feet. They keep their foot pads supple, but also sent mark the trail. I actually like the way goober smells. Probably because I grew up with a dish called Frito and Chili pie. My old dog Missy had the standard stinky dog smell which I wasn't too fond of, but I didn't hate it enough to give her a bath more than once a month. I wonder if th

Charlies_Mommy: OMG I'd have to agree that what you said about tail docking is absolutely HORRID. Thankfully they don't use that practice anymore. Now here's my tibit. I do have a boxer and they dock the tails at a very young age 3-5 days old, so that's not something the average pet owner can normally avoid. I have met MANY boxers with tails living her in Germany so I like them either way, however those tails HURT like h*ll when they smack you, almost worst than a lab tail, they have nothing to slow them down, and anyone who's met an excited boxer knows the butt is a wiggling, lol. One of the reason that dogs still have their tails docked today is because of injury from smacking into everything. And my over all opinion is yes I do like it, but I really don't like the longer show docks on boxers, dobies etc Now on to the ears. I am a 50/50 sort of person when it comes to cropped ears. I cannot stand the short "fight cut" that is on pitties, staffies, etc or even worse with italian mastiffs and dogos where they cut all the ear off. I also tend to not like the long slender show cuts on boxer, dobies and danes. It also very much is about the dog and if they have the right head for a crop. I seriously picky about cropping ears, even though I like it it has to be thr right crop for the dog. And as for dogs lie white or checked boxers I believe they should NEVER have their ears cropped it just looks ugly. Also there are some dogs that look much better with cropped versus floppy. I'll post pictures later of what I feel is an ideal cut for a dog and what I think is ugly.

Hollie will hide her treats and her dog food. Her favorite hiding place is under MY pillow in the bed. She has tried to hide her entire food bowl by pushing one of her plush toys with her nose in an attempt to get the toy on top of her food bowl. Why doesn't she just use her mouth to pick it up and place it on the bowl? Silly dog!

Yes I agree Pat, Fort Funston could get very crowded and dangerous for smaller dogs as packs of bigger dogs playing could cause injury. My 2 Basenjis were very good and stayed pretty close to me and got used to the crowds. The only problem I had there was with this lady who had an older Tri color female Basenji. It would bite my blk/wht, Nika who was 1-1/2 on the butt. A few times of that and I stayed way away from her. The problem is Nika was a very playful girl and never did anything like that. A few times of getting nipped on the butt started her doing it to other dogs and Basenjis. A Basenji would want to play and Nika would chase and give a nip and the the other dog would get mad and a fight would occur. Nobody would ever get hurt thankfully. It was rare that it would happen as I took them there for 9 years, mostly on the weekend without problem. We had a lot of fun and people loved the Basenjis! Ringo, the red/wht was a very entertaining clown when we'd go down to the beach.

We take our kids as many places as we can… hiking swimming running/jogging- nature trails parks doggie events (like ours!! www.firstgiving.org/bdawg) I've taken Lexi to do lure coursing a few years ago- it was fun, but she wasn't as in to it as I thought she might be; our dobie was FAR superior! lol
