• hey guys…i dunno how many of yall are in northern cali but i thought this wouldnt hurt....

i am living in alabama, but i shipped my basenji back to cali (where i am from) to live with my grandmother who is battling leukemia and for my mother to keep an eye on him in august. unfortunately almost two weeks ago, he got out of the backyard where my mom had put him while she took my grandmother to the grocery store for a quick trip. my mother has put signs up etc everywhere and the only news we have is that two seperate people saw him same day he got out very close to my grandmothers house....

he got out monday, december 3rd in fairfield, california. anyone familiar with the area he got out near the kmart and amy blank school. he is microchipped btw. my mom had a lost dog tracking dog out and it tracked his scent from the house to a nearby park, around the park but never leaving the park. we have a feeling that someone has picked him up and they are keeping him. my mother has gone door to door with flyers and to local vet offices. she has contacted the animal control and local spca offices as well. between the family we have listed it on every website imaginable (dog detective, fido finder, craigslist, myspace, etc). i figure it would not hurt to spread the word here as well. please please please if you are from the northern california area please pass the word around.

unfortunately i have no pictures to attach as my computer was stolen the day after thanksgiving with all of my pictures of him on it!! i have posted some pics in previous posts if you take the time to go see them.

thanks for any and all help!!!!

    God Bless!!!

  • **OMG I am so sorry for you. I hope he is found.

  • You might ask your mom put a notice in the local newspaper - maybe offer a small reward too.
    Hope you get him back!

  • I would definitely do this, especially at this time of year, people need money. Also if there is a local radio station, they just might have a spot where they list lost animals. I can NOT imagine losing my B, I tear up just thinking how hard you must be taking it. My B is microchipped as well but some people don't check it out, I have a tag on my Bs collar that says REWARD with my phone number. I sure hope you find your furbaby, please keep us posted and I will say a prayer that you do find her/him. By the way, your baby looks like it could be my babies sibling!

This dog was posted to many groups here in No. California by one of our club members that lives in Fairfield. Sorry to say, there has been no sightings… hope that it turns out that he is found....

  • Posting a small reward may help especially if someone took the dog. They may be willing to give it back if they get some money doing it. Be sure to get the flyers up in lots of places. When your mom talked to the local vets did she give them your dog's microchip number so if it he turns up in their office they will know?

  • I pray you find him soon!

  • Here's a link you should check –> http://www.petharbor.com/

The advantage of PetHarbor is it lists a whole bunch of shelters in numerous counties (your B could be anywhere, not just Davis)...

Also, you should check daily... You should try going to the shelters and actually look and ask -- it seems there have been cases when just because someone tells you on the phone there are no basenjis in their shelter -- does not mean that's the case... You may want to physically go there (and also make sure to ask them about the doggies that are not being shown/displayed for some reason or other)...

Good luck... Hope you find him soon...

  • OMG i hope you find him soon. how could anyone take someone ele's dog, have a heart and give back the dog !!

  • I am so sorry that this happened!
A reward would be a good idea. Maybe having your mom go to the school and posting it there for the kids to see…I would think a child will talk.
Just keep searching. Is Jiggys chip current?
Paws crossed that your little guy is returned safely!

  • Also,
Have you notified the micro chip company. They will put an allert on the chip ID number. ( I know Home Again does this) I would also continue to check with the vets in and around Fairfield. Usually if they know that a Basenji is missing they will scan all basenji's that come in for a check up just to make sure.
I am not sure if Fairfield has a local paper…you could post a reward there too.
    Good Luck!!!!

  • I so hope you contact all the local humane society in the area's about this dog…pics with contact info as hand outs will help the shelter workers..
They won't put down a jack russel mix, instead of a basenji if they have not seen photos of a basenji!
    Good luck.

  • I'm so sorry to hear about this.. I agree with everyone elses great advice.. rewards and get pictures out there to shelters and everywhere, not everyone knows what a basenji looks like.. good luck and i hope you find him soon.. and please keep us updated..

  • we have posters and flyers up everywhere, mom went to all the local vets that are close by with flyers and to notify them of whats happend, all the spca's and shelters in our area have been notified and have pics etc, the microchip company has been notified as well….a reward has been offered on the posters, we check the shelters daily, and we check the body identification list daily as well just in case the worst of the worst happens (thank God it hasnt!!!!). there is an ad in the local paper (havent thought about the radio...i will prolly do that today...thanks for the idea).

my mom has a coworker with two girls that go to the nearby school...both are old enough to understand whats going on and that if someone has him its not there dog....both girls said they would start talking to classmates and see if someone mentions a new dog...etc etc

i just pray that someone got him and thought oh a puppy for an xmas present and is keeping him...and he is safe and warm and being loved!!!

thanks for everything!!! i just have faith that he will be back!!!!

  • If you put out more flyers perhaps you should add "NEEDS MEDICATION." If the dog was taken by someone they might perhaps decide not to keep a dog if they think it has a life long medical issue that requires spending $$$$. I had a friend who used this method to get their dog back (and the dog didn't really need medication).

I heard that this works really well to add to their ID tags also, people tend to not want to keep a dog they have to put effort into or they think is sick

  • When you are looking for a dog there are a couple of basice things - one - while you can mention the breed - lots of folks don't know it so describe the dog (I remember a humane society called me once to evaluate a basenji that was loosing a lot of hair - big time shedding - I went there they had already adopted it out and at it was a Shiba Inu at which point they looked at each other and said - oops I bet it belonged to the people who called.)

You need to include universities and medical labs who do research. I druggie can make 1500 a week stealing and reselling dogs and that's in MN - can't imagine in CA.

If you can figure out what direction the dog went - go 10miles straight line in that direction and flyer that way. If you think he's been at the park and someone picked him up - circle around the park several blocks in each direction, flyer at any school or church nearby and any grooming, vet or pet supply. Check out dog parks in that radius.

I will tell you that I spent a summer in Mt Vernon IL looking for a lost collie - we spent thousands of dollars, and lots of man hours - cable tv we were on the radio etc. Never did find her until after a batcher sold her to another state for purposes of puppies. Then we found out who had her the whole time we were looking.

be sure to add - no questions asked. Another thing we did to increase visibility was to make t-shirts with the dog pix on the BACK with big letters LOST dog on the back. We made several and whenever someone came in from out of state to help us look they had a shirt to wear. Good luck.

  • Just saw this on the web - a basenji found in El Cajon, CA… You may want to check it out... It may sound far but there are pets that have been known to travel really far distances... Good luck...
