B's and Cold…

Basenji Talk
  • Senji loves the snow, as long as it's not the slushy kind. He loves sticking his nose in EVERY single rabbit footprint that he comes across. He'll want to stay outside until his feet get so cold that he starts limping, and then he actually lets me pick him up. (He hates getting picked up!)

  • Being in the PNW, our b's have to go outside in the rain. I put rain coats with a warm lining, on them and we MAKE them walk.
I am always suprised how they treat snow so much differently…they will run in the snow until their toes are frozen...but rain,
    not so much.

  • We put a coat on our B. When it gets really cold, we add a sweater underneath. She doesn't complain too much unless she gets road salt between her pads. Then we have to pick her up and carry her. If the salt trucks have been out, I pick her up before crossing the road.

My husband says he wouldn't want another basenji because of the WI winters making her so miserable. I say "It's only 3 months and they are such a joy"

  • During the damp winters here, my dogs live in the Sally Wallis sweaters I have.
They demand these sweaters go on before hubby and I leave the house for work.
We keep the house at 62 when we are gone, the b's have tons of beds including mine to get under the covers…but they still want the sweaters.
If you want something nice to keep the dogs warm in, I would be happy to share her info.

    • I don't have hand made sweaters from England!* but my dogs do. LOL
  • Abby does like to "burrow" down in the covers…and doesn't mind being covered up.

  • My dogs get up for walking with Lou, 400am, then come back to the warm bed and are 2 mounds under the covers, until breakfast is served.
    Who can blame them!

62???? My goodness that is cold. I thought I was bad at 67.

  • Our dont mind snow but they tend to want to stay out too long and can easily get frost bite on their ears & feet, they don't realize it.

Yes, please share the info. I found some sweaters online that look nice, but would love some other options.

  • Jack loves the snow, he goes and rolls in it, lays in it, paws at it, lol. EATS it…We bought him a doggie fleece coat last winter tho, he doesn't mind wearing it at all, but he definitely prefers to be outside. LOVES begin out!! lol...

I must tell you, they are great, last a long time, and easy to clean.
If you get one, let me know what you think.
    My b's love them!

  • This is how we suit Nala up for a cold VT day…the boots are for when it is really cold and icy. Muttluks are the brand. Her jacket is from a local shop that is no longer in business, but it has nylon on the outside and fleece on the inside and cinches up around the "waist" with a bungee type cord.

Very cute outfit!:D Nala see's plenty of snow, that's for sure.

  • Reminds me of the Christmas story, where the boy wants a RR pellet gun…
His mom getting little brother ready to walk to school.
    Always makes me laugh.

Is you b able to run with all this gear on?
I don't know how you live in such a cold place!

  • Our used to wear sweaters than on winter he decided to have none of it and would try to rip them off.

I still laugh about when he tried doggy boots, they were bright yellow and he looked like a four legged duck. They did not stay on long either.

LOL! Yes, me too. She does run in the jacket, it doesn't hamper her B500's outdoors (see my photo gallery, I believe  ). She is more careful when in her boots, but without them, she walks for a few steps, then stops and picks up each paw and will not move. It is cold, but she seems to have acclimated nicely. What she really loves about the winter is the woodstove (see avatar ;) )!!

So cute…I can picture Ruby dressed like that...she wouldn't move.

Thanks…I'm going to have a custom one made for Ruby and if that doesn't work out, I'll give these a shot.

So far she is so picky about having anything on. I've tried 3 fleece coats - didn't like them and walked stiff legged because on the first one the leg part went down below her front elbow, then on the 2nd the leg went to the front elbow, 3rd one she didn't like the neck...

I'm about to order her a custom made sweater to see if she will wear that as I can spec out the leg openings, and everything else that bothered her about the other coats. It'll take 2-3 weeks to get it. Here's a link to the sweaters:

Of course, I'll shoot myself for spending so much if she hates that too…

  • They look so warm and cozy…looking forward to seeing her in one...let's hope it's not only for a moment!

  • Jack does well in his coat, like it isnt on at all!! lol

I wish they could go everywhere with me but I couldn't imagine trying to get them on a plane. We are going to lake Erie in a couple week for a long weekend and they are coming with us. This campground is very dog friendly, this is the campground's annual halloween party before shutting down for the winter. Everyone is asking us to bring our dogs and of course they will be dressed up in costumes. After that we are taking a week to go to Cancun. Dog's can't go but will staying with a friend that has 1 acre fenced and her 3 dogs and mine were practically raised together. So we call it a sleepover. Everyone plays until exhaused so not a lot of time to get into trouble. I will miss them while I'm gone but know they are in great hands with my friend.

I don't keep a collar on Ava unless I'm walking her. Poor Leki's tragic accident is similar to what happened to two Goldens who lived down the street from me. They were in the backyard playing while their owners were away, and the whole block knew immediately that it was awful. This is an old thread, but there's some good info in it. Doggie daycare has been a lifesaver for me. It gives Ava an outlet for her endless energy and is good for socialization. She is a friendly girl who likes everybody– human, canine and feline. I take turns handing her off to everyone there, and so far, she'll go right to them with a hello lick. I want her to know that people are good and she can trust them. Hopefully, it will always be that way!

When I gave EL D his birthday (Dec 21) / Christmas presents (several stuffed toys and some treats) he had such fun tearing open the wrapping. And even more fun tearing out the squeekies :) He had one toy torn apart before he even opened some of the other presents!

We use the seat belt/harness type for both of them. They're in the back and stay put. They just curl up and sleep.
