  • If you are looking to add a Basenji or a Whippet to your home I highly recommend Tad Brooks from Meisterhaus breeders in KY.

I live in Baltimore, MD and I researched breeders up and down the east coast and mid west. I wanted a tri and I wanted to know that he came from a loving environment and a healthy bloodline. Tad has been raising basenjis since he was 11 years old. He is knowledgeable and caring.

Tad has been an amazing addition to our family circuit. He answered all of my questions before I made my decision on a breeder. His application was detailed and asked a lot of really great questions. It was obvious he cares about where his puppies land.

When Kongo was 11 weeks old my boyfriend flew to KY to pick him up. Tad met him at the airport and sent Kongo off with a blanket and toy from his puppy home. We could not be happier parents. Kongo has such a great personality. I was prepared for a dog that would take a lot of stressful training and tough love. He has been so easy compared to some of the stories I hear. I know a lot of that has to do with his first 11 weeks.

Tad has remained very involved in Kongo's life. I do not know how he manages it with constant shows and batches of puppies but he is always there when we need him. No question is to small or silly.

I said I only wanted one dog but now that Kongo is so wonderful I know that somewhere down the line I will have more. I will be getting them from Meisterhaus and no where else.

  • How old is Kongo? We have three basenjis and one whippet from Tad, and I'm wondering if Kongo is one of their littermates.

  • Kongo is almost 6 months old.

  • I want a tri soooo bad!! He is adorable.

  • What a handsome boy, I can see why you're so mad about him.

  • I live In Louisville, KY and I am familiar with Tad. He loves and cares for the dogs so much, and he has some of the most beautiful basenjis and whippets I have ever seen. I had seen his dogs through his website when I was looking through basenji breeders, and remembered how fantastic his dogs were. One day I had rescued a basenji with a troubled past and I was trying to place her in a new home that would fit her personality and needs, and I got contacted by Tad, and he was very sweet and wanted to know if I had placed her yet, and if not he offered to take her. I had already found her a new home at this point, but I thanked him and was impressed by how deeply he loves the breed. Congrats on your beautiful new addition!, You picked a wonderful breeder.

  • Tad is a shining light in the breed. You did very well in your research efforts! They truly do not come better.

  • This is why it is important to research a breeder. A good breeder is active in the breed and is willing to help.

  • Tad is a wonderful person and breeder! I am about to pick up my second kid from him and I could not be more excited!

  • I was working on our website and doing a search and just happened on this very nice note and compliment! You really did make my night! :-) Give Kongo a kiss for Joseph and me and tell Scott hello. Thank you again, Karen!

Thanks for the responses, glad I wasn't the only one feeling 'paranoid' about it.

@TwinPeaks: Hello Brianne, There are no breeders closer to Edmonton than Shamaron Basenjis. I would like you to know that over 14 years I have had 3 basenjis from Shamaron basenjis. All the dogs turned out to have fabulous temperments and lovely confirmation. With just a bit of research, the sire of the litter they have on their website shows that the sire or dam is not tested and comes from a Fanconi line on the bottom side through Changa Gala Celebration, with not only Fanconi but PRA eye problems in his offspring. Now, I can't say anything about the Dam of the litter, as I don't find the pedigree on Sally's pedigree site, but this kennel has produced a Fanconi Affected in Shamaron's Kofi Utundu and they have breed to lines with much known Fanconi.

Good reading, very important for people buying a pup to know they have a responsible breeder.

Congrats on picking a breeder and getting on the future puppy list…hope you are successful in getting a pup! :D How exciting! Oh, and regarding the sleeping - I truly think the secret weapon for sleep, besides wearing my pup out before bed, was the snugglepuppy that Lisa (lvoss) recommended. Definitely get one of those! Liyah had no problems sleeping - I only remember her crying the first 2 nights and then only for 15 or 20 minutes, otherwise, I've always had my full night sleep. So sleepwise, for me a puppy was easy, as was potty training.

@Benkura: I have just sent off for the Fanconi testing kit for 2 of my dogs. They've not arrived yet but when I get the results they will be added to the site. The other 2 dogs will be tested when I can afford it. The website is in a very infant state - I'm learning as I go along. I plan to add pages about my dogs with pics and a guestbook etc. Keep checking for new items. :) That's great…. always good to have the Fanconi test done, especially if the sire and dam were not.... good luck on your results. And you site looks really nice so far.

Pat, I've also been guiding them here and asking them to become members so they can learn a little more about Basenji's than they already know. Many people thinking of this breed think they are barkless, odorless, and are trainable! After reading a few threads they either come back and say no way, or show me where to go from here.
