  • Petra, I would absolutely sign for you! In fact, Bob and I both would, but I think there's a rule that 2 members from the same family can't both sign…

  • I am a member and I would be happy to be a sponser also. :)

  • Awesome…will sign up here in a few then..I've been wanting to sign up for a while, but felt odd asking for "sponsors"...thank you so much guys..:D
How do I do it, just fill my app form out and send in payment, then what?

    Thank you again..:D

  • I am not a member. Like others, I've always been under the impression that the BCOA is mainly for show people and breeders.

Since we don't know any other Basenji owners (let alone any BCOA members), I wouldn't have anyone to sign the application. Now, if we lived in the Seattle area, that would be a different matter, but I'm not sure there are even any Basenji owners here (not that I'm aware of, anyway).

Your pups breeder is a member, they would sign for you, as would I.

And again, BCOA is not just for breeders or people that show. It is for everyone and everyone has something to offer and learn about the breed.

  • I'm a member of BCOA.

Also, don't forget about your local basenji clubs….they are also for ANY basenji owner.

    You are exactly right!

  • @tanza:

How many here are BCOA members? How many would want to be? If not, why not?

    .

    I've been a member for 10 years.

  • I was a member, not now.

  • Debra, if you ever want to rejoin, I will sign for you.

  • Thanks Andrea, Sharron and LVoss, I may just apply and join up. I am addicted to the breed.

  • Anne, you really should join! You are such a great basenji person.

And I feel anyone/everyone who is interested in basenjis should join. I think it is only helpful to gain many different persepctives of basenji life. I feel strongly that the BCOA should not just be for breeders and tend to cast my vote for BCOA board people who are interested in more than just conformation.

So I hope to see many new members on the upcoming rosters!

  • I am not a member, but I have looked into it and would be interested in joining.

I would be interested in some events just to witness and understand how "professional" Basenji people do things at large organized events, to see a variety of Basenjis, to learn more about the breed history and current breed activities, and to help out with the rescue side wherever possible.

I use the scare quotes because I realize it's not just a club for breeders and professionals, but I do feel like that's the crowd that a lot of the events cater to. I could be mistaken of course. And with a fairly active local Basenji meetup group, I have not been hurting to meet other B's, though I would always love to meet more!

  • I am a member.

  • The Basenji Club of Northern California has its annual Specialty show in October. That is a good event to meet lots of breeders, owners, and of course, basenjis.

  • Thanks for the reminder! I think Tanza mentioned it last year. I wasn't as interested last year, but I think I would like to go this year. You don't have to be a BCONC member to attend?

We really aren't a scary group ;) Most everyone is really friendly…and lots of people are downright welcoming...It kind makes me giggle to think of people wondering how we "professionals" do stuff...the majority are soooo just totally normal pet owners...we may have more dogs than the average joe...but really...most people are just like you, we love our dogs, like to talk about our dogs, care about the future of our breed...not scary at all!

  • TY Sharron, a few people have offered and I really appreciate it. I dropped out after I spayed both my girls and knew I was done showing. But yeah, we should support the breed and I'll probably rejoin soon.

  • You do not need to be a member to attend or to participate. Lots of people come to shows just to meet the breed and talk to breeders and other owners.

  • Please do come, the Specialty is on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at the Alameda Fair Grounds in Pleasanton. All are welcome! We have a very nice pot luck lunch for everyone (non-members included and welcome). Lots of Basenjis and lots of people to talk to.

I will not be there this year, it is the first time in 20+ yrs that the one convention that I have to attend is that same weekend, so I will be in Florida.

Please research the health problems in Basenjis especially Fanconi Syndrome! There is a DNA cheek swab test for it and I believe it only costs $75. If your dog has not been tested and is over two years old, she needs to be strip tested for glucose in the urine monthly until you have the DNA test done and obtain the results. Untreated Fanconi Syndrome will kill a dog! Here is a webpage that explains health problems in Basenjis: https://www.basenji.org/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=155&Itemid=292 Jennifer

Admittedly Basenjis and sheep are a problem. Thank you for such friendly welcomes. I have had some Basenjis who I did eventually manage to 'train'!!? to be safe with sheep and could wander among them and occasionally help to herd, others (including my current pack are killers and can't be left to wander freely where the sheep are. We have a double gate system for visitors. There was a time when I could have taken them all out for walks together but now I take them 3 at a time and my whole day is taken up with exercising dogs. When I get the hang of my digital camera I'll post some piccies. Nomrdggs - I'm not sure I have kept my sanity!!!! Tanza - I have actually seen some of our original imports - and I have attempted to breed as close to the original type as I can. I bred my last litter 4 years ago.

Sorry, no, I'm in San Diego. But if you ever head South…:D It looks like there's a pretty active club up in your neck of the woods. Maybe they have meetups you could join? Not so much here, that I know of, though a lovely woman I met through Karen has 3 b's in a community near here. We have 2 basenji mixes in our neighborhood that we've discovered (your dog will find those for you if you take her to a dog park or a popular walking area). Congrats again - can't remember if your post said this was your first B, but aren't they just amazing?
