That's just how they like it– swaddled like babies and cuddled up against you. He's adorable-- congrats!
Uzie-the new Tri in my life
-
Well, I am just so happy with our new addition. We went up to Tenn about 3 weeks ago as the owner could not give him what a Basenji needs! The first picture shows him the day after he was with us, then adjusting to the new pack, and finally, he makes himself a new home(22lbs vs 150 teddy bear-tricolor…). I am working on toning up his muscles, have a very large fenced in 2 acres, 30 min walks 6 days a week, meals twice a day (where he would sometimes not eat for a few days in a row per the owner), and he came with some Basic Obedience, so we are working with the clicker-some tricks too for mental stimulation..(also note the food reward puzzle-really great tool)..He is such a pleasure. No real 'bad' habits. Some anxiety if left alone in a room or outside (I have to do a dog shuffle at times between rooms) for too long-which varies with his desire or mood or whatever! and then it happens- the Baroo! Oh, boy, had never heard one in real life, all the other dogs' ears go back like a siren is going off- they have no idea:eek: My husband and I cover our laughs so as to not offend him as it is real for him! But three weeks have gone by and I am impressed with his progress. Will be purchasing some sticks to test him for Fanconi real soon. I got the link from BRAT, but if some one has a few to sell if they are not going to use them, let me know. Thanks for reading through this and in advance for any sticks!:)

How wonderful. I'm sure he will be very happy in this new home, sounds delightful!

So glad things are going so wonderfully! It's always a joy to hear of a re-homed dog doing so well.
When you mention 'sticks' for Fanconi testing, are you talking about the pee test sticks? Those won't tell you if your dog has Fanconi, it will only tell you if your dog is spilling sugar in their urine. Go to the Basenji Club of America. I believe you can order the Fanconi test there. The test is done using a cheek swab.

Right, I will go to the site, thanks for the help. He is 17 months old, but I had a concern wash over me when he drank an enormous amount of water yesterday. I have to tell you that I have a Burmese Mountain Dog boarding here, and they were instant friends….Well, not to gross you out, but Uzie seems to like to lick the 'drool' wads from the dewlaps, and therefore, while is is floating on the water....I witnessed this to my dismay, so needless to say, I am in control of the water bucket now.....(Ugh!!!).so it may be an isolated incident, but I am going to test before he is 3 years old pretty soon and keep on eye on him.

The Fanconi test can tell you PROBABLY if your dog is a probably clear, probably carrier or probably affected. It really should be done. But no matter the results, you need the urine test strips. You need to do them at least one day a month, preferably 2 days in a row to be safe, for life.
Bless you for rescuing this gorgeous dog! Btw, is that a Swissy in the picture? LOL your poor big dogs, they aren't going to know what hit them!

I NEVER thought about the consequence of having a drooly dog with a Basenji…OMG..yup, I can just see them trying to 'clean' the drool all the time...sheesh!
He is super cute! Congrats

Yes, actually a Bernese Mountain Dog, and true to the nature of things, he is very gentle. I wasn't sure if my Uzie was extra thirsty, liked salty drool or what!? Anyway, I will look into the test strips to check the sugars in the urine. I have read the protocol by Dr Gronto (sp?) concerning Fanconi. And Debra Down South, I was concerned about a young B with Hershey the 10 y/o lab mix, but to my surprise, Uzie is quite dog savvy and not a dominant nature, so luckily it only took one growl from the old man to let the youngin' know he has to keep a distance- so the match was made in heaven!

I have changed my avitar so that all may see the whole family, but I guess I will always be Buddy's Pal since he was the first to train me so well in Basenji! I can only say welcome Uzie, I will treasure you, and school's open!

Congratulations on your new addition. I'm so pleased to see how well he gets on with the others.
-
congrats - what a cutie!
and i love the thought of a basenji being a drool-cleaner-upper! i love big drooly dogs, but am totally grossed out by them. but if suki could keep the drool under control….
yeah, still i don't think so, but a good thought. -
What a lovely pack you have. Congrats on the addition!
-
Congratulations! Can't wait to meet your new guy, he looks great. And (ugh) Topper was a drool addict too, he loved Boxers, Newfies, etc, and licked their jowls clean, uuukkk!
Total gross pout for me. -
Very pretty Tri. Looks like he'll be happy.
-
wonderful! you know that color is called try-ing in basenjis? is that a swissy in your pack?
-
Drinking a lot of water could indicate a urinary tract infection.

Welcome. Thank you for opening up your home and heart to this basenji! You will find lots of friends on this site.

He looks right at home! Congrats!
I wouldn't worry about him being a try-ing Basenji….yet. Paco's a tri and he's an absolute angel as long as he's been walked.
