Basenji Wanted: Miami, FL

Basenjis For Sale or Wanted
  • Hello All,

I've been actively searching for a Basenji breeder in the South Florida area for quite sometime now and haven't had any success. I had a Basenji as a teenager and am quite familiar with the rigors and requirements of the breed. I'd be very appreciative to anyone who has any contacts in the South Florida area that have puppies available or are looking to rehome an adult Basenji. Thanks!

  • Did you check out BRAT www.basenjirescue.org
There are a lot of b's needing homes back east area.

  • Please check out www.basenji.org which is the Basenji Club of America website. Under the tab About Basenjis, click on Breeder Referral and you can locate breeders by state. You will probably have to wait until Fall for a pup unless some breeders have leftover pups. Some breeders also have adults available.

I do not know how long it has been since you owned a Basenji but if you are getting a pup make sure the breeder is reputable and is doing health testing, especially the Fanconi DNA test. Most reputable breeders do eye and thyroid tests and hip x-rays.

  • I know it's a hike, but there are darling adults and pups right here in GA… surely worth a trip. :)
    http://www.basenjiforums.com/showthread.php?t=10112 still has 2 adults I think

BRAT has a lot of dogs in Florida if you want an adult, but if you want pups or from a good breeder, Robyn is not that far away!

Hi, We have a three year old red and white female who will be listed on BRAT as available for adoption soon in GA. We also have several young dogs in Florida who are recent rescues who aren't on the adoption page yet. If you are interested in learning about them, please submit an adoption application at www.basenjirescue.org.

    Debbi J.

  • If you will look under this heading at yodeldogs, you will find someone with four red and white pups and two adult basenjis that are available in the Atlanta area. These are beautifull Basenjis. I recently adopted an adult female from her and we are thrilled with her. I know it is a long trip, but believe me, it is worth it.

I would also look on Petharbor and Adopt-A-Pet. It can be difficult to find one under 1 year of age. You might have to go farther in your search or perhaps raise the age to 2 years. Jennifer

There are breeders in OH that would be listed on the BCOA website. If you are getting a dog from a breeder make sure the dog and/or the parents are health tested. I am sorry to hear about your boy passing from Diabetes. I have heard about a couple of Bs being diagnosed with Diabetes and not with Fanconi Syndrome lately! Jennifer

I think that many adopters would pay for the cost. And add to that if it is a situation that a person has contacted BRAT to give up the dog and he/she is not tested then they should be required to put up that fee. I think that BRAT does an excellent job in most respects, however this is one point that I really disagree with not testing. I am not sure that they would agree to test even if people covered the cost

It isn't that they are necessarily outside dogs…they are just incredibly "barky" dogs so they get sent outside a lot. Any and ever time anyone is out in our backyard, their dog barks and barks and bark for-ev-er until we go inside. Those dogs may drive us crazy, but they are still animals and we still feel bad for them :(

@DebraDownSouth: Still don't know why Debbi is really Terri, but at least I have the dogs sorted. Long story, but all with good reason :-) Teri is a good person and treats her dogs like kings. She does good by them and those pups deserve good homes… sooner than later we hope!

Hi, welcome to the forum, nice to see someone elase from the UK here. Please tell us a bit more about your Basenji, have you any pics ? :D We lost our Basenji boy last year and have now got a 5 month old Puppy girl, Malaika. When we were looking for a Pup we were advised to go to shows to identify breeders.
