Your basenji's tricks

Basenji Talk
  • Mine all take a charlee bear from my lips, very gently, then sit to eat it.

  • Not nice. You first blow him off as not into tricks, then list ones that put me to shame… going to go pout now.

    • stand and spin.
    • show him who's boss - where he shakes his stuffy viciously
    • pictures! - where he will freeze right where he is
    • poor poor, or are you sad? - where he will do a fake pout and make his body shiver then slowly falls over onto his back
    • go, zumi go! - and that starts a B-500!!
  • Dolce can give high 5 & low 5. A great rollover and will do stick em up where she stands on her hind legs and puts both front paws in the air and stumbles backwards.

  • I can't even imagine! It seems like it would be so difficult or impossible to teach them some of these tricks lol…for me at least.:o

  • Great thread this, Fran. It's made me smile, i love the tricks Zumi can do, especialy show him whose boss and poor, poor.
Also like the stick em up that Dolce does. Going to have to try them.
Malaika does the high five and the choosing game.
This is where i put a treat in one closed fist and show her both hands saying which one.
She places her paw on the hand she thinks it's in, if she guesses correctly she gets the treat, if i open my hand and nothings there she then places her paw on the other hand.

I'm going to try the 'choosing' game today. Kipawa seems to have a really good nose.

let me know how he gets on Fran

  • MD, how did you teach the stick em up trick please ?
Senji, how did you teach the poor you trick please ?
I'd like to have a go at these.
My last Basenji had his own trick where he would run upstairs backwards, i think he did it so he could watch you chasing him as he knew we didn't want him up there. I do wish i'd video'd it.

  • @SenjiShowgirl:

Cricket's cue for starting the B-500 is "no, no, bad Cricket! GIVE THAT BACK!!!"

  • Dolly's cue is somewhat like your Cricket's - but we don't have to say anything, all she has to do is see Bob with the Dremel! We then spend the next 10 minutes chasing her around the yard until she finally boxes herself into a corner.
The only reliable trick any of ours have now is "Shake" before they can get out of the bathtub - and yes, they do shake when given the request! (Notice, I did say request, as it's pretty useless to command a Basenji)

@margiem Interesting link! If true, the basenji helps in the lion hunt, by impersonating prey and not by being the hunter...

Dogs learn quickly, especially if their former home was not so nice. Then a new name is perfect. We changed Nicky's name from Nyako, picked a "sound alike" and she learned it pretty quickly, well, as much as some basenjis ever "learn" their name. Some days she doesn't recognize it at all, haha. Eddie was Skippy, I looked at him and called him Fast Eddie and it stuck. That boy knows his name all the time! And do tell, what is the awful name???

My Basenjis catch and kill wasps and have never got stung in doing so - their snap and release is too quick for them to get stung. However one did get stung on his foot when he trod on a dying bee. Often Basenjis get frightened of a particular thing when they sense their owner's fear. Are you afraid of wasps, Shelley?

I don't have the flu but I am home from work today because I am going to get a shot in my foot to kill a nerve. I am nervous beyond words and Chase and Zahra have been cuddled up with me all morning which really has helped to keep me calm. I wonder if the podiatrist would mind them coming into the office with me for the shot? :D

Rocky yodels… like these dogs do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iTlEwTOzm0 Especially when we come home. Complete with the "lightswitch" tail flick and happy feet dance!
