First 'hump' today

Behavioral Issues
  • It was a wacky day at the off leash dog park (see my other post). Anyway, the energy at the park was 'off'. One dog started humping another dog, and then oh my God, Kipawa made one humping motion.

I don't think I've moved faster in my life. I got him by the collar and gently steered him away. Oh dear, he is almost five months old, and I don't want to neuter him before 10 months.

Maybe it was just bad energy at the park today. I don't think Kipawa would have humped had he not been right near the other dog that was doing it. And why do people let their dogs do this? They laugh - think it is funny.

Kipawa loves this off leash park because he can run like the wind there, but today was not the best day for both of us.

  • Honey, don't panic…its more of dominance then sex...
    Fixed dogs hump.....
    No worries...

  • While a dog that humps everything is very annoying, we don't panic if neither dog is bothered by it. Usually the hump-ee will tell the hump-er to stop, first nicely, then firmly. Some dogs really don't like it at all but some don't seem to care. The humans are more 'put off' by it than the dogs! I am lucky that Eddie is not a humper. In our park group, we have one that is humpy but his owner stops him after a few minutes if the other dog is bothered.

It is good not to let Kipawa get in that habit!

  • Kipawa, if it makes you feel any better- Oakley turned 10 weeks Tuesday and he has tried humping me twice when play got rough….

  • Yes, humping is common..even our bitch Luna does it to the males…now that is funny..and very annoying..it is a dominance thing, but most people associate it with sex so therefor its got its bad name..
I too try to get my dogs to quit it quickly, there is no need for it, we all know who the boss is on the totem pole...me :)

  • Hey Kipawa, lasti Sunday at the dog park was strange because all the dogs were humping each other. The humans were all commenting how weird it was.. Even dogs who never hump were humping !
Are you not interested in showing Kipawa,? I ask because you mentioned you will be neutering .

  • Sometimes that happens when someone has had a dog in heat in the park, or near-by. Then even non-humpy dogs get into the action. All the dogs will be a little nutty, hopefully next time you are at the park things will be back to normal.

    oh gosh Chealsie… :D

I guess I want my 'little boy' to stay a little boy longer.

No, we won't be showing Kipawa, not for any particular reason other than we just don't have the time to devote to it properly. But we are interested in luring, for recreation, not specifically for achieving an particular status.

  • Ok, I wish there was luring here, I think that would be neat!!

  • In my opinion puppy humping is just a natural thing - lambs do it too. Yes it may be a dominance issue, I'm not sure. They usually grow out of it if and irt's quite easy to gently discourage them but above all don't make an issue of it.

Just to be clear, I am NOT against Spay/Neuter, my contract requires spay/neuter on all companion pets placed. Just on the "when"… early spay/neuter, is not IMO the best for the dog.

I think that sounds perfect! You want the younger dog to be comfortable going new places without the older one; and you want the older one to still have some special one on one time with the humans…but there is no need to get carried away with having them do things separately! Dogs like to act as a pack :)

We did go to the dog park on tuesday and Lenny did seem particularly wound up that day. Maybe there was a female around that was in heat. I suppose they shouldn't have been at the dog park if that was the case, but who knows. I know there was at least one other intact male there at the same time we were there. Surprisingly, they did not mess with each other. Poor little Tayda - always has to watch her back! Literally! ha ha.

Animals definitely know. The one day that I've been sick since Ruby arrived, she curled up with me on the couch for most of the day…wasn't her usual rambunctious self. I once was taking care of my friend's black lab for a weekend and was sick one of the days. I was on the couch and the dog just came over and put his head on me like he was saying "sorry you don't feel well...don't worry about running around with me, I'll stay with you"...it was the sweetest thing, and we basically just hung out in front of the fire for the day.

i was really worried about taking my new basenji to the dog park this past weekend, because his last owner said he was bad with other dogs, but he had so much fun! i'm proud of him! he even got a girlfriend (and boyfriend!!) (this gorgeous rosey light fawn-greyish colored italian greyhound - absolutely beautiful!) and then this grey male i.g. started humping him, lol.. that's the boyfriend :p . so good job to your basenji! it's so nice to see them get along with others!
