• There is a chart at my vet's office that states good weight for an adult male basenji is 24 pounds. My female is 20 pounds, and has no fat. My basenji mix (not sure what she's mixed with, we think maybe sheltie) is fat, and weighs 35 pounds. She also barks just like any other dog, but howls, yodels and grumbles as well. A 40 pound basenji mix would have to be mixed with something lots bigger than a mini-pin - a full size pincher, maybe….... Can't wait to see her pictures - she sounds like she sure has the basenji temperament!

  • @DebraDownSouth:

There are many actually.. I have met several who were not overweight and registered, but certainly not show quality.

I prefer smaller, but I was very new to the breed and astonished at the nationals in NC about 8 yrs ago to meet several LARGE ones in mid 30s up to 40 pounds.

I do have to say am curious to see pics of the mix here as it doesn't sound much like a basenji.

And btw, Fran… no proof on the Florida rescues being "pure"... not going to go there... but predominately these pups are upper 20s to mid 30s.

This article I just found shows a lot of the dogs:

Debra, thanks for the link to the article. Yes, they do look bigger. I'm just glad the dogs were rescued - big kudos to the folks who worked on the rescue.

  • Well Sayblee was 28 pounds when she finished her championship. She got down to 22 to 23 when she refused to eat and her ribs stood out (when we finally put her on cyproheptadine). We kept her closer to 26 pounds most her life as long as she was eating. No fat I assure you. I really fantasize about having a nice 18 pound Basenji.

Debra, thanks for that link, great article..so happy those pups were rescued.

  • Welcome, Maria and Jazzmin!

We'd love to see the pictures… are the ones you are trying to upload too big? If you reduce them to a smaller size, they may upload.

My favorite basenji trait is their insistence on burrowing under covers, especially lately when it's been "cold" here in sunny Florida! My Lola is also a Sun Slave, and will find a sliver of sun to sleep in... when it moves, she will wake up, move 10 inches, and go right back to sleep! 🙂

    Welcome!

  • I am mixed between my son and this dog. Yes, she also burrows under the covers whenever she finds a person on the couch or me when I am doing my knitting. I have yet to figure out the size to send. I scanned the pictures and they came out way too big.

I am positive that the dog has a lot of doberman that mixed with this basenji. She has all the traits of the basenji and little of the dob. She has no fat at all on her. She does have a doberman nose. Her profile show a long nose and its very basenji. Her failing points are her ears, the barking and the long tail.

  • Maria, make them about 3 x 4 with max 100 pixels per inch. that should make them plenty small enough. OR load onto photobucket, which is free! and you can post any size here cause you can use thumbnails.

  • Hi Deb,

I have both of my pictures and now it seems that the scanner won't work. I have Windows 7 and I can print pictures all day…........The scanner was working with XP windows and it takes took much time to load these pictures.

Go to your printer's website and see if there are any updates that will allow the scanner to work on Windows 7.

I had the same problem when I went from XP to 7…the printer part worked just fine, but I couldn't scan. Unfortunately, my printer didn't have any updates available, so I had to get a new printer. Fortunately, printers are nearly a dime a dozen now, so a brand new printer/scanner/copier won't set you back too much dough.

  • I want to see the photos as well..welcome.

  • I have scanned my picture and it won't recognize Basenji Forums/Facebook. Now what do I do

  • I have the proper address but my scanner is still not working.

  • Your best bet is to upload the photo to Photobucket. It's free and easy to use. Then you can copy/paste it's link on a post here.
