She doesn't drink much water

Basenji Feeding
  • Do let us know what the vet says.

  • Good to hear that your new dog is joining the family well.
As far as water, Otis doesn't drink very much at all, and if he does he tries to steal drinks out of my water glass..although ver random..my dogs are on the raw diet and dogs that eat raw in general drink less anyway..not my podengo, he drinks gallons, well he attempts to drink gallons, most end up on the floor infront of the bowl..ggrrrr.

Otis will walk and poop..unless you look at him, then he stops pooping all the way..and continues on his walk until you aren't looking at him anymore..a little shy I guess..

  • Just a change in home, and the stress associated with that move, can cause loose poop for several days. I have a theory (based on circumstantial evidence) that dogs crated a good deal don't drink much. They never know when they will be let out, so just get in the habit of not drinking. My free-range pack stop drinking when we have rain, they also won't eat, it's like somehow they know that what goes in must come out…outside in the rain.

Be patient, hopefully she will start to drink!

  • My last 2 Basenjis were both water drinkers. I had this large mixing bowl I would fill with water and I had to refill it like every 2-3 days. I feed them wet/dry combination. The vet said Buddy doesn't drink enough water and that's contributing to the calcium oxalate crystals. Not enough flushing of the bladder/kidneys. I'm reducing the protein a bit too.

  • I don't know how she was drinking her water in her previous home, but I assume she drank it out a bowl because we got all the supplies that were deemed necessary for her transition – no bowls were given because I said we already had some. She'd also only been with her previous owner for about 9 months, so I don't know what to assume, diet-wise. Previous owner mentioned having cooked special food for her on occasion, but that didn't last long due to time constraints.

DNA test kit has been ordered, another box ticked. =) Bringing in a sample of the not-so-pretty-poop for our Friday vet appointment. I'll continue to keep a close eye on everything going in and out. Meanwhile, it's very informative hearing from other folks. As my partner said, "It makes sense that an African dog wouldn't feel compelled to drink much water..." But I do feel more at ease having asked around.

  • If you are really concerned about water consumption then you can mix water in with her food. I have done that with my cats because they don't drink enough water and male cats are prone to blockages so it is easiest to just mix water into the their food.

  • Let us know what the vet report says. Of course we all want to celebrate a good fanconi report!

  • Maya is a walking pooper too! Its a nightmare when you are in the middle of town with people walking along the pavements, bag in one hand, dog lead in the other and the bl00dy dog is walking in circles round you pooping while you're trying to collect it up….!!!

Buddy walks around in circles on a lawn with leaves and it's dark out. Then when he's done he tries to run off pulling me while I'm looking for poop camouflaged in leaves with a flashlight.

  • Dan, that must look rather interesting in your neighbourhood. I wonder what your basenji thinks you are looking for. :)

He looks at me like  "what the hell are you doing"? "I just pooped there now let's get the hell outta here"!!

http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-reviews/natures-domain-dog-food/ is really good for breaking down ingredients…..I mean they categorize tons of different brands fairly well and explain how they came to that conclusion. Costco has some cheap "good" options so I hear. It really is worth it to invest in a high protein (and high fiber) food; I only feed my 37 lb. dog a little less than half a cup of taste of the wild twice a day, and my 21 lb. dog gets 1/4 cup x 2 times a day. My little dog had ribs showing until I switched her from the corn based diet her breeder had her on to TOTW. Not to mention she was crapping like a million times a day, and had absolutely disgusting skin. Corn is absolutely terrible - goes right through them and they end up looking really skinny but real 'grain's are notorious for causing allergies. ...... With just my 37 lb. dog and a 30ish lb bag of taste of the wild ($ 55 dollars here in Alaska, so cheaper elsewhere) lasted well into the third month. So, that's about maybe 22 bucks a month [overestimation] spent on food for one dog…..which is pretty affordable really. And, of course, most brands are cheaper in the lower states anyways, possible to find even cheaper brands that are healthier than Eukanuba.

Fran, dogs don't really digest whole veggies. One thing I learned many moons ago on barf lists, if you want your dog to fill up, serve in chunks. You want your dog to get any benefit … smash them up. If you want to check it for yourself, give your dog several chunks of different veggies, check the poo. Often what you find looks pretty much what goes in. That said, mine love apples. USUALLY they chew them up. I got up to Cara throwing up 2 days ago-- on big apple chunk and liquid. Sigh. Guess I'll slice much smaller.

This was the answer from The Honest Kitchen, via their Facebook page: Me: _This article came up in a discussion on one of my dog forums: (link) It was pointed out that the Honest Kitchen appears to use a pre-mix, given the list of minerals and additives at the end of your ingredients lists. I know you have a very thorough list on your website about the countries from where you source your ingredients, but I was wondering if you could respond directly to the concerns raised in this article about mineral and additive sources?_ Their answer: Great question! We have an affidavit from our premix supplier that ALL the components are from European and North American Sources with the exception of one, which is from Israel. The components are blended right here in the USA. As with every ingredient in our diets, no part of our premix is derived from or has even been near to, China.

One time, I left Loki & Freya in the car while having a quick meeting before a road trip. Unfortunately, I had forgotten a 3/4-full 20-ounce latte in the cup holder. Loki generously helped himself to the whole thing! There was not a single drop left!!! And I really needed that caffeine jolt! Unsurprisingly, a 3 hour road trip with a B "bouncing off the walls" and diarrhea turned into a 4 hour ordeal. :-) Loki & Freya's Mom

I feed Tayda in her crate, because if i don't she will pick up a few pieces of food, carry it to the carpet and eat it there. Also it keeps Lenny away from her food. Usually when he's done eating, he'll wander over to the crate and wait around like a vulture. ha ha. However, I did notice Tayda's eating habits changed a lot once Lenny was around. She used to not eat much, maybe once a day, and she would never finish her food. Even now, I feed them both at the same time and Lenny will gobble up his food, and Tayda will just sit around. Once Lenny is done and is wandering over for Taydas food, she gets up and starts eating. It really seems like she only eats so that he doesn't get her food.
