  • You say parents have been Fanconi tested, what were the results of the test? Do the results appear on the OFA website? Is there a website for the breeder that we can check out?

  • @MDSPHOTO:

You say parents have been Fanconi tested, what were the results of the test? Do the results appear on the OFA website? Is there a website for the breeder that we can check out?

The results are on the OFA website. Black Devil is a carrier, Sweepea is a clear.

  • Who named your dogs? The reason I ask is that the suffix "Of The Congo" was used by Veronica Tudor-Williams, one of the founders of the breed. It is a highly respected kennel name and to use "Of The Congo" on any Basenji now is in very poor taste.

  • We actually bought our dogs after they had already been registered with these names. We ourselves have not and will not be using "of the Congo" for any dogs we would name. Thanks for pointing this out.

  • Perhaps I missed it, but what's the name of your kennel?

  • Roxandsweet,

Please use our For Sale posting format described in For Sale/Waiting List Post Rules: Read First.

  • In the UK 'of the Congo' is a protected affix. Although I realise this is not the UK, I'm surprised that it has been used and that your KC would allow its use.

Veronica Tudor Williams was my first mentor and one of the first importers of the Basenji into the Western world and many of us still hold her in the deepest respect. I would imagine that many of your dogs go back to 'of the Congo' lines. I'm pleased to hear that you are not using the affix.

I'm sorry if this posting sounds a bit harsh and I don't mean to offend but feel deeply hurt to hear of the use of this affix.

  • Roxandsweet–-welcome to the board and Merry Christmas!! You may want to go through and read some of the older threads, intros, health, and breeding information to get yourself acquainted with what is the norm in the basenji breed.
You will find that the acceptable minimum of health-testing in basenjis prior to breeding is: hips, fanconi, and eyes. Adding in thyroid gets your dog a CHIC number. Since you have a litter on the ground, you will have plenty of money to complete the health-testing on your pair once the pups have go to their new homes….8 weeks of age or later. I would actually make the appointment now for them... then you can get it done for sure when she is in anestrus... a good time would be 12 weeks after delivery date.

Don't forget to order your Fanconi Tests for your puppies when they are about 2 weeks old. You can do the swabs when they are only 3 weeks old and have the results back before the pups are 8 weeks old! This is what a reputable breeder would do when breeding a litter involving a carrier. It will tell you which are clears and which are carriers, prior to sending the pups to their new homes.

I think folks posting here need to understand that anyone naming their dogs using a well-known [previously or currently used] kennel name, is generally not going to be a reputable breeder… these dogs are older, almost 4 and 6. Give her a break, and the benefit of the doubt.

Good luck with your pups... that is a lot of puppy poop to clean up!

  • Hi! I live in Racine and would like to meet your pups…..but i am confused? Are the pups clear of fanconi? I didn't catch that. I would be interested in they are clear. I will not be breeding but i am looking for a very specific pup. I am looking for a brindle female. but might be interested in a male....depending. I will contact you later on your cell. thanks

    Steph

  • Belinda,

    Steph,

Please start your puppy search at BCOSW.
There is a pretty extensive breeder directory there, and if those breeders do not have puppy plans, they can probably direct you to others who do.
You may need to wait to get the right puppy from the right breeder, but be patient.

Maybe you can come to our fun match in April and meet some of our members.

In addition to probably clear, there is nothing wrong with a pup that is a probable carrier. And as Nicole said, there are plenty of options for breeders in the general WI area, they just may not all be breeding litters this year. I know of at least 3 litters that were whelped this year, and there are least that many planned for next year.

And any ad that states "barkless" and "non-shedding" is a warning sign IMO.

  • Looks like this person is just trying to sell puppies. There is very little information on the ad. Unfortunately, folks like stephmarieh will fall into the trap and buy a pup form one of these unscrupulous "breeders" and then pay the price later.

I tried to find out what the other three ads were on that classifieds website, but couldn't find a link to them. Wonder if they were for more pups and what breeds? Almost sounds like a puppy mill.

BTW: I've noticed the thread starter hasn't been on to answer any questions.

  • Are these 13 puppies all from the same sire/dam?

  • I would be pretty sure it is two different litters

  • Would be good to get the fanconi info on the second set of sire/dam.

@senjisilly said in Basenji Puppy in US: Get Educated BEFORE you BUY I second this motion! Seriously... to quote the animal shelter I got my Aussie/Border Collie from during the holidays back in the day... "A dog is not for Christmas. It's for LIFE!" Let people who've been in this breed for some time, have contacts, know the in's and out's guide you. Picture in your mind a 15-year commitment. Help this breed by supporting responsible breeders who are passionate about the breed. How do you spot a Responsible Breeder? Insist on health testing PRIOR to breeding. Know your breeder's goals for the breed. Meet them! See if they're in @Zande's Pedigree Database. Read the Basenji Club of America Illustrated Standard on @tanza's site. Most of you won't ever show your dog and that's OK! Your breeder should know the Standard inside and out. They should be able to talk to it. Read it and ask them how their line supports the standard. Ask them what their breeding goals are, what they've been working on, where they are going, etc. That's fair. A good Basenji breeder is going ask you a TON of questions, AND THEY SHOULD! We want good solid safe homes for puppies, retired show dogs or dogs that don't want to show. Not every puppy will be a show dog. In fact, most won't be. Litters on average are between 4 and 6. Responsible breeders need pet homes for puppies that aren't going to part of their breeding programs. You can support responsible breeding by providing pet homes. Just make sure your breeder will make time for ALL your questions both before and AFTER the purchase. Mine will! :beaming_face_with_smiling_eyes:

@debradownsouth He was Arrested and then he died. I will refrain from posting Horse related posts. You just did not believe me when I said Horses are taken to Great Adventure. Now regarding the Basenjis relation to Wolves: Mu dog loved the Wolves and when I would walk the Wolf and the Dog in the Park the Dogs there which included Rotties, Saint Bernards, Bull Mastiffs all pulled their owner out of the Park because Dogs instinctively fear Wolves. Thannks!
