Hello from chicago!

  • I just joined this forum because I believe I'm an owner of a Basenji mix. I got my 9 month old this past summer from the shelter in town. Crazy little girl! My fiance doesn't believe that she is part Basenji but I'm out to prove him wrong!! Eventually we will get an DNA test but for now I'm interested in learning more about Basenji's. The more I learn, the more I know she has some sort of Basenji in her! I'll have to post a picture of her later to see what you all think :)

  • Welcome to the forum, your little Dog is very pretty. She certainly looks Basenji like , whats her tail like?

  • Hello and welcome to the forum. I'm looking forward to see her pic :).

  • it's not curled, it's straight…but it does have a little white tip! I'm looking for a better picture of her whole body but I don't have any here. I bet they are still on my camera.

The aninimal control we got her from said she was a sheltie...hmm

  • Strangest Sheltie i've ever seen,lol

  • Looking at the pictures you posted on the other thread, it is possible, but would like to see a full body shot. I would also say maybe border collie

  • I added pictures in a photo album. I've taken lots of pictures and I working on going through all of them. I'll add more when I have some side shots!

  • Hi and welcome.
    Where are you in Chicago?
We are on the South Side, Chicago Lawn / Marquette Park neighborhood.

  • Houston

She is so pretty and in my non experienced eyes she looks to have some b in her..her sister is adorable too.
Welcome onboard..your fiance might just loose this one..or not, either way y'all are both winners with such cute girls in the house.

  • The smooth forehead and smaller appearance, makes me think rat terrier which would mean probably some basenji.

  • I'm in the south loop in Chicago! Not too far :)

I actually have considered that she might be a rat terrier but I still cant get away from parts of her really reminding me of a B. Maybe she's a mix of the two.

Either way she is a cutie and a handful! I'm glad I found this forum and all of you. I hope I can get some insight on why she does the things she does and be able to share my experinces with others.

Cool. Our trainer is in the South Loop. Laura Monaco Torelli. She was voted best trainer in Chicagoland Tails, and we love her (if you are looking for a trainer), she also trains for Chicago ACC, so she may know your girl.

    We should meet up sometime.

Rat Terriers are a more recent breed, and there was a lot of Basenji used in developing their bloodline, which is why Lisa said rat terrier would probably mean some Basenji. http://decker-rat-terrier.com/

We are pretty sure my Petey has Rat Terrier in him. Either Rat Terrier or Jack Russell Terrier mixed with some sort of herding dog, border collie or ACD probably.

My Katie doesn't look nearly as much like a B as your girl, but we tell ourselves she has Basenji in her, whether or not it is true :) We base it on her voice, behavior, nightly self-grooming rituals, curly tail and lure-coursing obsession.
We have still been welcomed here with open arms. This is a great group.

  • Welcome to the forum!

  • Welcome to the forums! What a cute pup.:)

I'm way north of the city on the IL/Wis. border but, I thought I'd let you know the Petsmart Store-Pup Hotel on Canal and Roosevelt has a Basenji experienced employee on the night shift if you ever need a place to leave your dogs. MY DAUGHTER!!! It's her interim job while in continuing (grad school) education.

    Again, welcome.

  • Her poses are very basenji-like, and she sure is cute! Could be part black/white sheltie, I guess, but could be part basenji as well. Both your dogs are darling!

  • She certainly has the right ears and markings…and she crosses her front legs. It's possible...

    Welcome!

I own five basenjis. Two yodel until you have a headache and my female barks. She always did. Short clipped barks. I also researched the breed before getting my first and she is an excellent dog. My third basenji was a handful. Three years later and he has stopped his destructiveness etc. It was a hard three years. Lol. You never know with a basenji. Greatest breed. Loyal, active, funny but some require ALOT of patience.

@agilebasenji: WOW - those are some amazing pics! welcome. please let us know your secret for socializing your basenji with fawns. Mine obsess over the neighbor's goats. LOL, mine would have been more the crazy over trying to get to them… but then again, maybe not. We were at a lure trial and there were cows grazing in the field next to the lure field. Both girls were totally into trying to talk to the critters... so far as to lick their noses through the fence.

Dave hello, I also am new to this site. I had my frist Basenji for sixteen years and lost her last year. I could only go for about a month before getting my next Basenji. I really love this breed I have two now. Good luck in your search for your next Basenji.
