Benadryl dosage ?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I have given Shaye (20.8 lbs) Benedryl .25 mg when she has gotten ant bites she wouldn't leave alone -vet says that's fine. My sister gives her dog Benedryl when there's going to be a bad thunderstorm, just to calm him down as well.

  • Malaika fine thanks. Can i just check for future reference, when you mention 25mg thats the dosage for the whole day?, not one dose.

  • Yes, I would not give it more than once every 12 hours if it's necessary to repeat. Makes them drowsy as well.

  • Sorry to be a bit dense, but is one tablet 25mg. Ours in the uk are 8mg per tablet

  • The veterinary reccommended dose is what I wrote to you earlier - this is not some random number pulled out of a hat but what the vets in my clinic (and around the country) with whom I work reccommend:

Dogs: 1mg per pound every 8 hours (or three times in 1 24 hour period).

So if your tablets are 8mg of acrivastine diphenhydramine each then a 24 pound basenji would be 3 tablets (8x3=24) - up to 3 times daily if needed.

While hives are not life threatening in and of themselves, they do indicate a reaction triggered by certain antibodies made by the immune system. When these antibodies are released in the system, they make basophils and mast cells (these are inflammatory cells) to release other substances leading to an allergic reaction in the dogs body which can affect the throat making breathing difficult - with or with out itch.

Had it been my dog, I would have treated with benadryl until the hives subsided to counter balance any negative affects that could have popped up when you least expected it.

I would also be aware that all future allergic responses have a very high chance of being much more agressive. If possible - liquid benadryl would be nice to have on hand for such on occasion.

  • Shelley - I always keep homeopathic 'medicines' For just such an eventuality. Apis Mel 30c for insect bites and stings and Urticaria 30c for allergy rashes.

On our walks my Basenjis are always dashing into nettles after prey and as soon as we get back they all have one tablet of Urticaria each and after a very little while all is well and they never develop allergy rashes. In my opinion much better than using chemicals of any sort!

  • Shelly - yes, our dosage in one capsule is .25. With the .8 mg pills (or capsules, whichever) that you get, I would dose the way Sinbaje (Linda) suggested.

    Thanks for the info Linda,
i didn't think for a minute that the dasage you gave was a random figure, it's just that tablets in the UK seem to be 8mg only and a full grown adult human can only have one tablet at a time, 3 times a day, so you can see my confusion, a Basenji weighing much less. Using human drugs on my dog is very new and i of course want to get it right, hence all the questions.
She is fine now but i will bear in mind your advice.

Thanks for the information, Helena i will get some Apis Mel and some Urticaria.

Thanks for your help, as i said to Linda, this is all new to me and i need to get it right.

Uhm, check your decimals. .25 is much less than .8mg. 25mg is greater than 8mg. I have no idea what the normal dose is outside of the US, but in the US, the regular dose is 25mg (not .25mg).

Did she always have them or did they start after something/some time? Do antihistamines clear the problem?

@elbrant said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: @Saving said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: divisive I guess I'm a dreamer.... but I believe that adults can have discussions and opinions without resorting to name calling and rude remarks. Your input is valuable. Thanks, because it's become a religion as soon as you speak against it people get so offended. The last 3 years has shown that quite clearly @Saving said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: Another friend's dog has a swollen leg at the vaccination site of his booster which is not resolving I"m sorry to hear about your friend's loss and understand the concern about the other friend's swollen leg. I had a similar experience, one of my dog's (not doodle) had a grossly swollen leg following a vet visit. The Vet told me it was cancer and I opted to let her go. Month's later I read online that it could have been the result of an allergic reaction. Please advise your friend to research possible answers before she makes a decision. Will do, a lot of the medication/vaccines cause inflammatory responses so it could just be that, it's still not nice for the dog to have that experience @Saving said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: dry food ... suffering from malnutrition omgosh! That is so scary!! I doubt the big manufacturers would ever allow a real study to see the light of day, but I would love to see one done. Just the thought makes me want to keep feeding my girl human grade foods. Yeah the same here, her research indicated that raw chicken wings were the optimal food and contain pretty much everything needed. I guess if you think of some of the processed crap they have in supermarkets trading as food for humans you can imagine how low the bar can go for pet food.

@Rebel - Full blood workup including full Thyroid panel (full panel no just what the normal vet workup that is not a full thyroid panel)... as they say make sure that he is in good health. Also what are you feeding him? How much total are you feeding a day? Also with reducing food, add veggies to his food to fill his belly... green beans are good to use... I use Cauliflower and Broccoli... Note also that low normal is typically too low for Basenjis.

To give you an idea of the contrast between Basenjis and Border Collies, my BC once spit out a pill, I said "Blackie" in a disapproving tone, and he picked it up from the floor and swallowed it!

@mryltis Read this comment from @morgansc within this post dated May 30, 2019, 7:49 AM. It answers your question. Ideally it is best to wait until age 24 months but no early than 18 months. https://basenjiforums.com/post/177284

My vet recommended benadryl before vacinations (can't remember the dose now). However, some months back there was a recall on benadryl so be sure you check the expiration date and get the most recent batch.
