Discharge after spaying

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Have a pet spayed so that there is no change of "littering" is a very good think indeed.
We sure hope you can find out why she is having these issues.

  • Hi everyone. Unfortunately the ultrasound image wasn't good enough to tell either way. We are expecting the swab results back on Monday and the vet is looking into referring us to another surgery where they have more advanced diagnostics.

In the meantime I found some other forums where people have experienced similar smelling discharge (metallic/bloody). A lot of these people found the discharge was coming from the anal glands. The vet hasn't suggested this but it sounds to me like this could be the answer. I didn't realise they could produce such noticable amount of discharge from the anus. Because it smells metallic coupled with the timing of her speying, I thought it was probably vaginal. Obviously this needs to be ruled out before any more dagnostics are done. If this is the answer, one thing still confuses me. Leela is still attracting intact males. Does anyone know whether speed bitches can still attract males?

  • If there is an infection present, sometimes, males will react to the smell of the infection.

  • Spayed bitches can attract males for some time after spaying but as Ivoss says it can also be the smell of the infection.

It should be quite easy to ascertain where the discharge is from. To my mind a metallic smell means fresh blood.

I do hope that you'll get results from the swabs and i'm pleased that you have an open minded vet who is prepared to use another opinion.

@italeigha I've tagged this pamphlet before so you may wish to search the forum for the link which may still work. https://my.puppyculture.co.uk/resources/flipbook/spay-neuter-booklet It's full of facts and studies and Liz McCargo uses it as her reference. There's a free read-only version if you'd search: PUPPY CULTURE SPAY/NEUTER BOOKLET. Title page attached, if allowed. [image: 1640079058258-2.jpg]

well, we made an adjustment. i bought one of the inflatable collars today. i'm not totally impressed because i'm sure if she were determined, she could still get at those stitches. fortunately, she doesn't seem like she wants to work that hard. so, i will let her wear that while i am with her so she can chew on toys comfortably, smell properly at restroom times, not run into walls, etc. when she's in her crate, i'm going to put the e-collar back on since i can't supervise. better safe than sorry. i'm still contemplating about bedtime…. she sleeps with me, so she's quasi-supervised, but i'm sleeping, so not entirely. we'll see....

One of my brother's friend Wilson also faced the same situation in which you mentioned that A friend at work lost her dog last year during the procedure so I'm somewhat nervous. But I faced this I got result normal. I was doing my work. I was upset at the time because I had my work burden headache. But decided to go near the Vet for my animal treatment I appreciate the work of the Vet.

@yag113: Exactly how I feel. Fortunately I love my vets, it's a husband and wife and they have come to know how I am and always work with me. I have 2 goats and the husband does farm calls. I feel very lucky. I always take the staff chocolates and snacks just in case I feel the need to get obnoxious about something…they will placate me! Thanks again for the input. I adore my dog and it's very cool to talk to people who love basenjis! Sounds like a great Vet practice!!! Let us know how the spay goes, I am sure she will do great!

@basenji_fan: I've never heard about breeders recommending waiting till they are over a yr old, that is something completely new   there are other threads about this topic. A lot of breeders suggest waiting until about a year old, so that physically the dog is mature before the removal of the sex hormones. I would say *most breeders suggest between six months to a year is great. A lot of people would prefer that their bitch not go through a first heat cycle, and that their male not start lifting his leg…which can happen around six months old.
