Spaying…

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I thought I read somewhere that Basenji's have a somewhat more difficult time with or you need to be more careful when giving them anaesthetic. I am planning on having Nulla spayed and just want to be sure. Also, is it safe to get them spayed anytime after 6 months?

    Thanks!

  • Most breeders recommend spaying/nutering after 1 year of age. That way they will be fully developed.
When my boy was nutered just recently, we were told to get a blood panel done to make sure he was healthy and let the vet know that Basenji's need special attention while being sedated. It is quite common that their hearts can stop. My vet actually allows you to be with them during surgery if you perfer.
Check with your vet to see if they have any prior history with this breed. If not, post a thread on the forum and see if anyone can recommend a vet in your area. :)

  • I've never heard about breeders recommending waiting till they are over a yr old, that is something completely new

there are other threads about this topic. A lot of breeders suggest waiting until about a year old, so that physically the dog is mature before the removal of the sex hormones.

I would say *most breeders suggest between six months to a year is great. A lot of people would prefer that their bitch not go through a first heat cycle, and that their male not start lifting his leg…which can happen around six months old.

@italeigha I've tagged this pamphlet before so you may wish to search the forum for the link which may still work. https://my.puppyculture.co.uk/resources/flipbook/spay-neuter-booklet It's full of facts and studies and Liz McCargo uses it as her reference. There's a free read-only version if you'd search: PUPPY CULTURE SPAY/NEUTER BOOKLET. Title page attached, if allowed. [image: 1640079058258-2.jpg]

@gigi See, we're adults! We found an agreed upon thing, for I an cranky. I am too tired to find it, but I recall that giving less than a full dose may not be legal if the dog bites

well, we made an adjustment. i bought one of the inflatable collars today. i'm not totally impressed because i'm sure if she were determined, she could still get at those stitches. fortunately, she doesn't seem like she wants to work that hard. so, i will let her wear that while i am with her so she can chew on toys comfortably, smell properly at restroom times, not run into walls, etc. when she's in her crate, i'm going to put the e-collar back on since i can't supervise. better safe than sorry. i'm still contemplating about bedtime…. she sleeps with me, so she's quasi-supervised, but i'm sleeping, so not entirely. we'll see....

Katie is a strange one. The vet taught us how to check for mammary cancer because of the body change, but she's still in the clear. This is the same dog that broke out in hives so bad during her first and only heat, she was put on Methylpredisolone for the duration. The more she licked to keep herself clean, the more hives she got. She was either allergic to herself, or so stressed nerves got the better of her and brought out hive like bumps. Never had a allergy/hives outbreak since. She's a strange one for sure.
