Lost Dog - Meridian, ID

  • On several lists and on facebook the owner of a red/white bitch has posted that her dog escaped from the vet boarding her in Meridian, ID. This bitch just whelped a litter of puppies on Thursday so they are very desparate to find her quickly.

If anyone is in the area or knows people in that area, please get the word out.

  • OMG…I didn't realize that she just had a litter....sigh...

  • She wasn't really clear in her post that this girl had only just whelped the day before she boarded her and the pups.

Seriously? OMG…I sure hope they find this girl....

  • Yes, seriously. The bitch whelped the evening before she was taken to the vet for boarding.

  • WOW, unbelievable!:eek::eek: Just out of curiosity, did she give a reason for boarding her right after giving birth?

I hope they find the girl soon, then take away the mother and the pups from the owner - geez.

Cause she was going out of town and said that no one in the family was qualified to care for the bitch and the pups.

  • Sorry everyone that I double posted this again.
Yes, this is a mess, and the pups don't have a mom and this poor scared loose girl is
    lost.
    Sigh.
    Awful, just awful!

  • The picture the owner provided to Sharron is of the girl as a young puppy. She is now 12-14 months old.

Again, this girl whelped a litter on Thursday. I am sure she is scared and confused and needs to get back to her babies. If anyone is in the area or knows people in the area, please spread the word.

  • Yes, I am sure this little girl is totally in a panic. It was posted that she would not let the human owner near the pups (or at least not much)…. so I am sure that she is beyond upset. If they took her out for a walk she most likely chewed through the lead to try and get back to her pups.

Going to be a tough go to keep those babes feed, I think there were three total

Well, the only comforting thought is that she was borded at a vet clinic, so they will know how to tube feed the babies, and keep them healthy…

One can only hope that is the case….

  • Oh, I hope this ends well, I can see other endings, but I am hopeful it will be a good ending.

  • Does that mean someone will be sleeping at the Vet clinic? Or will the pups be bundled off to the local E-clinic that's open all night? I don't know of any regular vet clinics where there is someone there 24 hours a day. Very sad either way.

  • I don't know about that information. Guess someone could ask RM, but it won't be me.

  • Thanks for posting the info Sharron.
Yes, it was an accidental breeding that happened when the husband was caring for the dogs while Marie was working.

Marie has to work as to many of us, if she felt safe leaving the bitch and pups with the vet clinic, then I am sure it was the best thing for her to do since she had to be at work.

Since this is supposed to be a support forum, taking jabs at her is truly not warranted, no matter who you are in the basenji world.

  • Thank you Kathy for your support of Marie during what is a difficult situation. It is refreshing to find someone who has been in the breed as long as you have willing to publicly support another like this. My hats off to you.

Well said, Karen. Let's focus on getting the family reunited, and not passing judgement.

  • This is a lovely little bitch… I posted pictures of her last year as a pup, stacked and head shots.
Everyone commented on how pretty she was... beautiful headpiece... sweet demeanor.
I truly hope she is okay, but I can see her being beyond freaked out and afraid to come to anyone but Mom.
Dad is dad and that is how it goes... she wants her Mommy.
    COME BACK LIL RED!

A good "safety" exercise to practice is a command that tells your dog treats are in the offing, and use it at irregular intervals when you are walking. Combine the command with a total release of pressure on the leash, preferably when your dog has firm tension on said leash. Then if something unexpected happens you have a built in reaction of the dog to look to you for a reward. This won't work if your dog is pursuing a major distraction, but should give you an edge if you have an equipment failure in otherwise neutral conditions. (you can carry this one step further by "accidentally" dropping the leash in a controlled area, or with a light line attached for safety, and practice until the dog turns to you when it feels a total release)

I volunteer at my local shelter and I am currently training to do behavior evaluations to help relieve some the burden the current budget cuts have out on the staff. Even overworked and underpaid, the staff there IME working with them scan the body and scan with both scanners they have. Does this mean every shelter is this way, no, but I think alot of people paint shelter workers as being kind of lazy about microchips and that is not what I have observed. Most really want the animals to be reclaimed and reunited.

Don't give up hope; I thought one of my other dogs was dead earlier this year, (he's a deaf staffy); he was lost during the week of the blizzard… I said many prayers, and I live in a farming community, w/the help of a wonderful friend, and many prayers Jack made it home safely... a little thin, raw paw pads, but he came home alive (and yes the fence was fixed). I'll keep ya's in my prayers.
