Hallo!

  • Hello,

I found this forum while researching Basenji's. Me and my bf are planning to add a new dog to the family and after months of research and looking at rescues etc we have decided on a basenji. We wont be looking for a dog for a few months but i figured I will join here and read and interact as much as I can in the meantime!
Little about me, im 27, live in Ontario Canada. We own a townhouse. For pets we have a cat, ball python and a 2 year old Olde Boston Bulldogge named Grendel. He is an awesome dog, very high energy and just loves everybody and everything. We want a second dog primarily for ourselves as a companion, but one thing I love about Basenji's is it sounds like they will be able to keep up with Grendel who is extremely high energy and comes from a working dog background.
Other then that Im not very interesting :P My pets are my life, I do work fulltime in insurance but I always look forward to coming home and being covered in kisses and purrs :)

Welcome onboard..I love your pet pictures..thank you so much for sharing.

  • Cleo is gorgeous. A friend of mine had 2 large snakes and I always held them when I visited - such a cool feel and smooth texture.

  • Welcome to the forum. Lovely colour on the ball! Grendel is very cute! My cat would fall of the shelf-she's rather clumsy!

  • Welcome to you and all your animals. I'm sure you'll love having a Basenji to join them.

  • Great pics, thanks for sharing. I love the name Grendel.

  • Welcome. I know you will find lots of information re quality breeders and healthy dogs on this site.
    Glad you found us.
I do have to say, some basenjis have a heavy prey drive, so make sure your kitty is safe, until the new family member is settled.

For sure I will make sure my kitty is safe. Our current dog doesnt try and hurt the cat but he plays too rough for the cat's liking so we keep them seperated 90% of the time just to be sure.
    :)

  • Starrlamia, Basenji's are hunting dogs in Africa, even to this day. I can't stress to you how much damage a basenji who wants to get a cat, can do.
Its not a matter of chasing them down, its wanting to make them dinner.
Sorry, this isn't nice to read, but they can and will hurt cats if they are not raised with them.

Thanks I am well aware of that, I own a bulldog and have been fully prepared for keeping the cat and dog seperated 100% of the time since we first decided to get him (almost 2 years ago). I was merely stating my experience with having a dog that already neccesitates keeping the 2 seperated.

  • Ok,sorry I was telling you what you already know.
Let me know if I can help you in something you don't. Laugh! glad your here.

:) I appreciate the info! I aware you guys are just trying to educate and prepare!
It's so hard to convey tone through the internet :)

  • My unmet friend, I always assume folks are just asking/telling about "stuff".
I can get conflict at work..so, with doing rescue, I always assume folks have good hearts.
Its all good. What else can I do to help you? You just have to ask..

@julia87 How much do you know about Basenjis? Have you met any? It's highly recommended to learn as much as possible about them before making a decision to acquire one. This would be a good place to start.

Welcome aboard, but do share his registered name ? Who are Dad and Mom and what was his date of birth so we can be sure to add him to the Basenji pedigree on-line database (with a photo ???) for the world to share him. http://www.pedigrees.zandebasenjis.com/

@msjames, @tanza did you a solid favor outlining expectations. Networking really is key to finding a "reputable" breeder. Most show their dogs and are connected to other breeders through showing. They all seem to know who is planning a litter and who isn't. I completely agree with Pat that you should meet your breeder in person prior to the puppies even being born. You can learn a lot. Is a Basenji right for you? If you want a dog to hang with you in the driveway with the garage door open as you chat with neighbors, or stand calmly with the front door open as you receive a UPS package... ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! Basenjis will bolt. they'll be gone in a second. They see it. They chase it. And if you think you have them trained... no. They've trained you. When they see it they will chase it. Basenjis, in my experience, need exercise. Mine get two walks a day. When they don't, they can be destructive. They're not shy about expressing frustration or displeasure through chewing up your best stuff. A big secure yard can mitigate this, but that's not a guarantee. They love seeing outside, so keep your blinds and drapes open otherwise they may open them themselves even if that requires chewing through them. They will climb onto windowsills, tables and low counter tops. They are capable of scaling a six-foot fence. They are known to climb trees. These are extreme examples, but better to know now. They are super affectionate. They can be trained... to a point. They are clowns and provide endless entertainment. A Basenji baroo is the best sound ever! They love to snuggle and will sleep on your bed and under the spreads and sheets if you let them. They love to share body heat. Tail twitches when I return home are the best!

@basenjilovers - She is very cute, please make sure that DNA testing was done for Fanconi and PRA. And if not or you are not sure, you can get the test kits at www.ofa.org. You do the test as it is a cheek swab.
