Sterilized bone

  • @AJs:

Maybe if he has the bone he'll stop tearing up his toys. Okay, or maybe not…:D

Buddy figures that if he destroys his toys that I'll have to buy new ones and that's his contribution to keep the economy going. :D

  • LOL!!! Anything to keep someone in a job…Someone has to make them, someone has to haul them and someone has to sell them. Good job, Buddy! :D :D

  • Otis leaves the stuffing alone..our dachshund Gus does not and once it is opened Otis is all over it..
I give Otis raw shank bones and yes over time he will chip it, but that is weeks of chewing on it..I per my trainer got them all some pressed rawhide bones to chew in their crates while supervised…7 minutes it took Otis to chew of pieces large enough to choke him..so no more supervised quiet time in their crates..no more rawhide bones that is.

I bought him a santa hat too. We'll see if I can get him to wear it for 2 seconds while a snap one. Camera battery is recharging. Yodel ho ho ho!

  • @nobarkus:

He's gnawing on it now and then looses interest then goes back to it.

That's what my B does as well. He's got 4 of them laying around. He'll sit down with one of them every now and then and gnaw on it for awhile.

I've got the Dentleys one also. Haven't noticed any pieces chipping off, but they do slowly wear down a bit over the years.

  • ohh can't wait to see that pic..Otis is frazzled right now..our tree is up and it is in his way..lol.

Yep, this one is tougher than the other one. I remember now having a sterilized bone for my last 2 Basenjis and it sat around the house for years. They barely chewed on it. They loved those rawhide chews. I had to take it away when it got down to 3" other wise when it got down to a 1/2 to 1" gooey mess they would want to swallow it.

  • B-mamma: As long as the boys don't treat that tree like a fireplug, you're doing well. :D

Somebody has to water it. :D

Oh boy are we off topic. From sterilized bones to peeing on Christmas trees. Happy Holidays!:D

  • Sorry, Mr. Nobarkus….couldn't resist. I really must learn how to behave myself.

No, no let's keep going and see what other topics we can create out of this sterilized thread.:D

  • Well, you brought up humanizing with this:

    @nobarkus:

I bought him a santa hat too. Yodel ho ho ho!

    But I wasn't going to say anything….:D

    (Charge, camera, charge!)

    No I'm Santatizing him. :D

  • Doesn't he have to go to a Santatarium for that?

  • @AJs:

Doesn't he have to go to a Santatarium for that?

    Yes, it's in Santa Fe.

  • Wow! All the way in New Mexico? They don't have one in Santa Ana? Or Santa Rosa?

  • "Maybe he just has powerful jaws as he destroyed a new $17 toy that is made pretty rough and tough."

You have to realize that makers of those indestructable toys have never tried them out first on basenjis.

@Saving said in Anal Gland Health Diet Adjustment (ideas?): scavenging on walks has increased though and that's quite annoying. LOL, omgosh! The amount of food tossed on the ground is astounding! And doodle will grab it up before I have any idea it's there! I wish I had a picture of the day she pulled a (whole) bagel out of a bush!

Not sure how Xylitol is being marketed. It is an alcohol found in a lot of plants, including birch wood, which is the source of Xylitol used in medicines. And it is toxic to dogs, even in small amounts. Most of the time you find it in sugarless gum and candy. Here is an FDA warning "Paws Off Xylitol": https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/paws-xylitol-its-dangerous-dogs

I would find out what he scared of or what he dislikes about the car. Is it the car itself, the sensation of being closed in, the movement when the car is being driven? Then work on whatever the problem is, with food. As for food, I use raw duck and vegetables. And I hand-feed all meals, so I never have a problem with not eating/partially eating. I would also recommend hand-feeding for anyone who does have a dog with food issues. Shredded chicken is good (as long as he doesn't have any reactions). But that and some kibble isn't a balanced meal. You may wish to look into a vitamin supplement, specifically something that has a focus on omega 3 (since chicken is high in omega 6), Vitamin C & the B vitamins (because if all he's eating is chicken and kibble, where is his source of vitamin C and the B vitamins?), zinc & copper (same reasons). All the best. EDIT: I just realized this thread is a year old and was bumped by what is almost certainly a bot.

I know this topic is old, but I give my B freeze dried salmon bites as treats. I usually find them in the cat section
