Water - Do they like or not?

Basenji Talk
  • @etzbseder:

Ok, Victoria, you don't have a real basenji, just a wanna be. She looks like a basenji, but it's just a disguise, you've got a look-alike that swims on her own, and fetches? That's a lab in a basenji skin. :D

LOL. It's more a case of learned behaviour from my lurcher. She can't resist the thrill of the chase, even if it means going into the lake. You should have seen the look on her face the first time she did it!

    Meanwhile…here's some more doggie fashion.

  • I had no idea how stylish dogs can look. I have to admit, it looks like europe is a little adhead in the dog fashion world…it's a good thing.

  • I can see Victoria has upped the 'cool factor' - distressed leather Top Gun coat!!

'The Ice Man' would paying much respect!

All together now…............"Fly in to the danger zone"

    Alan

  • My B hates when I give her a bath/shower but she will tolerate playing in the lake at our lake lot. She especially loves water on hot days but is still very suspicious of puddles.

  • Vicky, you have the first official chav basenji! you should be locked up for putting the poor soul in that tartan outfit - you will give him a complex lol.

We have a waterproof coat for Tilly when its really heavy rain, but she really doesnt mind getting wet.

    OMG!!! That's hilarious!!! LOL :D:D:D:D:D

When we put Chance in that suit we call him 'Chavvy Chance' LOL :)

  • Well it rained hard today in Scotland, so the Bs had to get togged up in their waterproofs to go for a walk. I took my camera with us. Apologies for the shaky pics as it is hard to walk Bs and take pics at the same time!!

    Getting ready for the rain.

    Three bums!

Don't you just think their bums are adorable??!! LOL!! :D

  • I love it..they look snazzy. Yes the bums are adorable..

  • Aaaah.. that's toooooo cute! Haha, their bums definitely are adorable! :D
You probably have a lot of people staring at you when you walk like this :D

  • Too cute for words!

  • Mine hate water and avoid puddles at all costs, they look at you as if you are insane if you go out in the rain, we have a large assortment of coats, summer rain coats, padded winter rain coats with the flap that goes under the body, knitted coats (knitted by me) crochet coats (knitted by Sally),we even have a coat that you soak in water and put on them to keep them cool in the summer, never been used yet though!

Vicki I love the burberry coat, I bet they don't mind being chavvy if they are warm and dry!!

  • lol. i can't stop chuckling! hahaha

  • Lio , Thirza and Kalusha only go deep into the water to hunt those little black waterbirds ( coots ?? ) sometimes when it is very hot they cool down by walking into the water but not further then their belly. Funny is that since thirza and kalusha are spayed they go more often into the water LOL
Jenson loves to swim, he fetches sticks out of the water or goes swimming by himself hahaha
when it is raining very hard they dont want to go outside, they even dont get off the couch when I tell them we go for a walk hahaha when we are in the forest and it starts to rain softly they cant be bothered though :-)

  • Victoria,
Once again, a fabulous set of photo's!

If the rain falls as heavy as it has done during these last few days onto those coats, I should imagine there is an almighty racket! It must be quite noisy, it certainly is on my coat in those kind of conditions.

How did they take to the coats when you first tried them on them?

    Thanks

    Alan

  • The most noise the coats make is the lovely swishy noise when they walk. :)
When I first put the dogs in their coats I don't take any nonsense! But as you can tell from my pics, they are used to being dressed up from an early age!! HAHA!!

The funniest thing about the coats is when the Bs are just getting used to them, they forgot to bend their knees!!! HAHA :D

  • Where did you find those coats? I don't think I could get Gossy into one - she hates having coats even in winter. She doesn't seem to mind the rain too much unless its more than a drizzle.

  • 3 of the 4 coats came from a company called Country Mun. www.countrymun.com They were expensive ?38 each.

1 I bought at a stall at a show but can't remember who.

The chavvy Burberry one was bought on Ebay.

Equafleece is a great supplier of coats. I have all different designs and colours from them.

The chav thing kills me…especially thinking of a basenji as a chav...funny, but somehow fitting! :D

  • Paxton hates the water. He dreads going out in the rain. However, when we go to the park and the local labs are playing in the left over puddles, he has the time of his life in the water. He just loves it!

We also fostered 2 other basenjis whom never seemed to mind the rain. The most recent was kept as an outside dog before the original family gave him up. That might have had something to do with it. It didn't matter if it was hot and dry, or pouring down rain turn to snow, he was just as happy to trot around outside.

I drove 20 or so minutes each way to my friend's horse far. Not one day did we miss seeing one or more dead dogs on the roads. Too many dogs in shelters picked up from being lost; or hit by cars. While my Rottweilers and first basenji were solid off leash, they only place they got to do it was at my friend's farm. And they weren't just turned out, I was out with them. In the old days, almost all dogs ran loose. The norm... and if they died or were lost... well, get another one. Many died. I quit talking to people about it. They say "they want to be loose" and I say "so do toddlers and 3 to 5 yr olds... I still don't open the front door and send them on the world. " They get mad, I get mad, nothing accomplished. We all take risks and avoid others. Unleashed is one of my "no" areas. And rawhide. Absolutely dogs raised in a village in Africa are not the same as here. I think most dogs don't get enough exercise and mind stimulation. When you do that with an intelligent breed like basenjis, you're going to get unwanted behaviors. You may want to read up on Dr Jo Thompson's work, as she also lived in Africa with these dogs. What wonderful experiences those of you who go to see where they came from.

Cara has TRIED to activate the ice maker. She flies into the kitchen when she hears me use it because she loves to play soccer with ice, then eat it. I fear one day I'll have to put some kind of guard over the panel. Sigh.
