• I Just got my 4th B named Buddy. He's about 7 months old at 28 lbs. Super friendly, enthusiastic, very strong and a real charmer. He's crate trained beautifully. He was picked up wondering the streets. Karen and Chuck run this out of their home, Medfly Brigade Basenji Rescue. Karen has been doing it for 20 years out of the different homes she's owned. All kennels built at their cost. The vet bills are huge and they aren't rich. They both sold all the property they had to build the current one. They work seven days a week as there are 60 dogs there now and they've had up to 80. Only the two of them running it. They can't afford help. Karen has stories of rescues you wouldn't believe. They need the donations to help. There are 2 large kennels that are air conditioned with dog runs.

    Karen and Chuck's home.

    Kennel #1

    Kennel #2

Enterance to Kennel #1. You enter into a room where their 2 cats live and they check the dogs for cat compatibility when they arrive.

    .
Chuck and Karen. Super helpful and caring people!

  • Some of the pics didn't come through. Probably too big.

  • NICE set up! Congrats on your new boy! He is a cutie!

  • Beautiful Tri! He looks happy. 🙂

Wow, what a set up. It looks very nice and of course well kept. They are exceptional people, Karen and Chuck.

Buddy is awesome. Very pretty boy and huge. When are B's considered fully grown? Our little guy is about 21 lbs at almost 5 months, our vet thinks he will be 30-35lbs. I sure hope he is wrong..I don't want a monster b ( sizewise that is). He actually has leaned out quite a bit since I put him on BARF about three weeks ago. He now looks like a B, very lean and muscular, as supposed to a more chunky puppy.

Yikes, 30 to 35lbs???? Way much for a Basenji??? Typical weight for males is 26lbs fully grown…. and for ones that are on the bigger side (my OJ was that way) 28lbs and that was show weight.

Buddy looks to be in great shape and if 7 months, he is most likely done growing... so he will most likely be that weight or right around there.

And yes, Karen Jones is wonderful with Basenji Rescue in So. California (MedFly)

  • He looks just fine now at 28lb. I'm exercising him a lot, a least 3 long walks a day spread out. When we get home he grabs a toy right away and wants to play.

Tanza,I agree with you on the 30-35lbs, I am really hoping my vet , in this case, has no idea what he is talking about. Otis is his first Basenji so needless to say his knowledge on b's aren't the best. But as a vet he has been very good, so we are sticking with him. Only time will tell if Otis will be monsterous or not ( again size wise..lol)
So would you say that by 7 or so months they are done growing?

  • Buddy is very lucky to have you. You two look great together very nice looking B. You can see the pride in your face thats really cool. Buddy's lucky with this being your fourth you have lots of knowledge really good for Buddy.

Karen has a really really nice place and they must be two of the most wonderful people to do what they do. Very large hearts and kindness will see what we can do to get them some money for helping all the dogs.

  • I can't see the pics! Only two of them showed up. Anybody know why?

  • It's funny because everytime I would call Karen about anything she would say "oh, I thought you were calling because you changed your mind kiddinly. She really wanted to keep him, but with 8 Basenjis and a Rhodesian Ridgeback mix of her own, the house was full. In addition to all the kennel cleaning and feeding she has to spend time working with the difficult ones. She said some will never be placed and will spend the rest of their lives there. There was one blk/wht male there that was very afraid of males because he had been abused. When I walked up to the dog run he was in he ran back scared and kept his distance.

  • Wow - 30-35 pounds is a huge Basenji! I have a 5 month old female who weighs close to 18 and I'm worried she is going to be a lot bigger than that - although she's as high as a lot of the full grown ones she is still all leggy. About how old are they when they are basically through growing to adult size?

That kennel is a wonderful place - those people really have their hearts in the right place- hope they can find homes for those poor doggies.

  • Otis is really large then because Jaycee was 5 month's old yesterday and maybe will be 15 pounds. Know for sure when go to the vet on Friday. Jaycee get's her Rabies then and check weight. Did you say Otis had his class 26th if so had did it go. Jaycee first really big class is this Sunday can hardly wait.

  • Yes, most of their size (95%) IMO is there by 7 months… you might get a 1/4" more between then and 1yr... what you get then is body maturity.... depending on their bone structure.

Interesting…Buddy doesn't look huge to me (height or weight)...he looks to be a good weight for his height...he has a tuck-up and in one of the pics looking down he has a waist and looks like his ribs would be visible when he runs.

That's correct because he's a bit floppy. Karen has a full grown tri female that is only 15 lbs and very beautiful too. Somebody paid out for $3000 (she had to be flown across the US) for her then didn't want her. Karen kept her.

Hmm… interesting... sounds like the person that I heard of in Central California that purchased a "show" prospect (but was from the MN/WI area)... but didn't hear that she was given up... price is the same as what I heard they paid.... Bit over the top.... 😕

  • Dan, Buddy is so cute. Four Basenjis, you must have your work cut out, lol,

It's my 4th over 34 years. The other 3 are gone from old age. The 3rd died on 4/13 of this year. The most I had at one time was 2.

  • I remember you saying you had recently lost a Basenji now.
We lost Benji in Feb and i'm hoping to find a pup towards the end of the year.
