Do you have the parents [sire and dam] names and their health-test results?What didn't you like about the place the pups were kept in?

I got her from a breeder here in the east of england, I do not have the sire and dam's names/test results as the breeder wasn't too forthcoming with much info and have tried to get in touch since and no joy.
The reason I didn't like the place the pups were kept is that the crate they were kept in really honestly was only big enough for two tiny puppies sat side by side, yet they had all been in there.
It was covered in excrement as were the puppies (i know they are puppies but it wouldn't take 2 mins to change the paper and clean them down)
It was literally dried onto them, was horrid.
Also the breeder had around 15ish other various dogs and they were kept in a tiny confined space in his back yard, it just had a really bad feel about the place, if you know what I mean?
I know you are supposed to shop around and find a suitable breeder, but I couldn't leave little Eesha there, I had to take her home.
I'm going to get a DNA swab test from the OFA website as Tanza suggested.

Since you were not even given the names of the sire and dam, chances are that neither parent had any health testing. It is good that you ordered the test, that way you know and don't have to rely on the breeder.

He was very suspisicous the second time, I have his name and contact details and address written down in the file at home.
He won't answer my calls though, so I'm not sure what esle I can do to find anything out? I could travel there, but not sure if that's a good idea?

Your girl looks lovely, such a shame that the conditions were not good, very poor of the breeder to allow them to get in that state and not clean them immediately, it risks all sorts of problems…

It could have been any number of reasons really, it could have been that the dog & bitch were perhaps too closely related or the bitch was perhaps on the young side to have had a litter, or perhaps they had breeding restrictons on them to say "not to be bred from". The main thing is that she has a good home with you and that you are going to test for the Fanconi because I doubt the parents have had any health tests.
Hi Katty23 - you should visit the basenji pedigree site - www.zandebasenjis.com - if you know the registered name of sire and dam of your pups you should be able to find out if they have been tested for Fanconi, as the website is updated frequently with this information. Maybe others on here would be able to assist if we knew the names of the parents.

Considering the conditions you described, the breeder probably wants no contact with you since he got what he wanted, your money. Also, I don't know about in the UK but in most places in the US he would be over him limit in dogs unless he had a permit for more. The conditions you describe the pups being kept in is also not right. So maybe he is just hoping you will go away.

Yes I agree, I doubted the parents would have had health checks as if they had I would've been given their names.
At least I will know either way with the test I've ordered, it seems the most sensible thing to do.

Contact any of the UK basenji breeders here as well (moetmum, basi, Patty) and they may be able to help you. In my short time owning a basenji i have certainly noticed that having such a small breed numerically means that people do tend to know who is breeding and what dogs they own. Im sure someone can help find out who Eeshas parents are

Well it does sound like you should not bother with that breeder anymore (in the US he would be called a "puppy mill"). However, as already mentioned, be aware that there may be health issues down the line (particularly the fanconi and also have the eyes checked and thyroid). Nevertheless congratulations on having been adopted by a basenji - she looks absolutely gorgeous (but then all basenjis do :)).
Feel free to ask questions about her health or behavior or how to train or whatever. This group has a tremendous amount of collective knowledge and willing to share.
