    Rita Jean

    Hello Rita Jean,

Thanks for your message, it made me smile 🙂 she really is one of the family and she gets more attention than either of us!! Thanks again, hopefully talk soon 🙂

  • @jonny:

She is soooooo cute!! I can see why you fell in love! Congrats!

    Hi Jonny b,

Thanks for the message and congrats, she is too cute, gets away with murder, hehe!! Hopefully talk more to you soon, 🙂

  • @Elscodobermann:

Hi Katty23, welcome to the forum.

    Scott.

    Hi Scott,

Thanks for the welcome, everyone here is so nice, I will get in trouble soon at work for being on the internet too much, haha.

Hopefully talk to you soon, 🙂

  • Welcome to the Forums. You girl is really cute.

Since you were not even given the names of the sire and dam, chances are that neither parent had any health testing. It is good that you ordered the test, that way you know and don't have to rely on the breeder.

  • @basi:

    Hi,

She looks full Basenji to me. The breeder does sound like he had something to hide. Can you remember the breeders name?

    Hi Basi,

Thanks for your message, glad she looks like a full Basenji, I couldn't be too sure because of the breeder and also I haven't owned Basenji's before.

He was very suspisicous the second time, I have his name and contact details and address written down in the file at home.

He won't answer my calls though, so I'm not sure what esle I can do to find anything out? I could travel there, but not sure if that's a good idea?

I am getting a DNA swab test as recommended by Tanza from the OFA i think it is, website, so that is one good step forward.

Do you have any idea what he would be trying to hide or why he would act like that?

Thanks again, hopefully talk soon 🙂

  • She is such a pretty little girl and is so fortunate to find someone who so obviously cares about her and loves her so much already. Welcome to the forum!

    Pat

  • @Basenjimamma:

Katty23, a big welcome to the forum, you will love it here. It is a wealth of knowleadge and friendship at your fingertips. Your little girl is beautiful, congrats on the new "motherhood".

    Basenjimamma

    Hello Basenjimamma,

Thank you for your lovely message, It does seem a fantastic site and everyone has been so friendly and helpful, I can't believe it. I will definately be staying on this site and getting to know some of you and your beautiful Basenjis.
Thanks for the congrats, it does feel like motherhood, I'm so protective of her and she gives the best cuddles!

How long have you had Basenji's for?

Talk to you soon, thanks again 🙂

  • Hi and Welcome. Nice to see another UK member.

Your girl looks lovely, such a shame that the conditions were not good, very poor of the breeder to allow them to get in that state and not clean them immediately, it risks all sorts of problems…

Im glad she has such a loving, caring owner now though. Look forward to seeing photos as she grows!

    Hi,

It could have been any number of reasons really, it could have been that the dog & bitch were perhaps too closely related or the bitch was perhaps on the young side to have had a litter, or perhaps they had breeding restrictons on them to say "not to be bred from". The main thing is that she has a good home with you and that you are going to test for the Fanconi because I doubt the parents have had any health tests.

  • @Elscodobermann:

Hi Katty23 - you should visit the basenji pedigree site - www.zandebasenjis.com - if you know the registered name of sire and dam of your pups you should be able to find out if they have been tested for Fanconi, as the website is updated frequently with this information. Maybe others on here would be able to assist if we knew the names of the parents.

Hope your enjoying life with a basenji!

    Scott

    Hi Scott,

Thanks for the message, I do not have the sire and dam's names, because I got her from a breeder who was not forthcoming with this info and has since not taken my calls. But I had to have her as I fell in love!

I am ordering a DNA swab test from the OFA website as recommended by Tanza, so that will put my mind at rest and seems the sensible thing to do.

As for the names of her parents, I really would like to know, but as I say cannot get hold of the breeder.

There's a lot of info on this site I agree, it's fab, very useful, I'm reading it bit by bit as there's so much on here!

I'm loving life with a Basenji, it's very different, but so much fun!

    How many do you have?

    Kat 🙂

  • @Katty23:

Do you have any idea what he would be trying to hide or why he would act like that?

Considering the conditions you described, the breeder probably wants no contact with you since he got what he wanted, your money. Also, I don't know about in the UK but in most places in the US he would be over him limit in dogs unless he had a permit for more. The conditions you describe the pups being kept in is also not right. So maybe he is just hoping you will go away.

  • @Buana:

Very nice Basenji… she's really cute!!

Thanks Buana, she is too cute, she makes us laugh every day with her odd little ways!!

How many do you have? 🙂

  • @Katty23:

As for the names of her parents, I really would like to know, but as I say cannot get hold of the breeder.

You may want to contact Sally Wallis directly. I believe her email address is on her website. She may be able to give you some information about your dogs if you let her know who your breeder is.

    Hi Ivoss,

Yes I agree, I doubted the parents would have had health checks as if they had I would've been given their names.
At least I will know either way with the test I've ordered, it seems the most sensible thing to do.
How long have you been a Basenji fan? Do you have many?
    🙂

    Good idea.

Contact any of the UK basenji breeders here as well (moetmum, basi, Patty) and they may be able to help you. In my short time owning a basenji i have certainly noticed that having such a small breed numerically means that people do tend to know who is breeding and what dogs they own. Im sure someone can help find out who Eeshas parents are 🙂

  • @BasenjiDiva:

She is such a pretty little girl and is so fortunate to find someone who so obviously cares about her and loves her so much already. Welcome to the forum!

    Pat

    Hi Pat,

Thank you for your message, it cheered me up, you are all so friendly! She has fitted straight into our family, I can't imagine her not being around now. She certainly gets plenty of attention and cuddles! Thanks for the welcome, how long have you been into Basenji's, do you have many? 🙂

  • Well it does sound like you should not bother with that breeder anymore (in the US he would be called a "puppy mill"). However, as already mentioned, be aware that there may be health issues down the line (particularly the fanconi and also have the eyes checked and thyroid). Nevertheless congratulations on having been adopted by a basenji - she looks absolutely gorgeous (but then all basenjis do :)).
Feel free to ask questions about her health or behavior or how to train or whatever. This group has a tremendous amount of collective knowledge and willing to share.

  • Yes, that is a very good idea that you contact Sally Wallis directly… she might be able to help you sort out who the breeder is and maybe help you find out who the sire and dam are, since the breeder is not being helpful. You can find her email on her website www.zandebasenjis.com

  • @Maya:

    Hi Maya,

Thanks for the welcome, yes lovely to see another UK member in you too, hopefully we can stay in touch and share pics and stories, I've looked at some of your pics, they're lovely.

I know, the breeder really wasn't fit to look after himself let alone any puppies and older dogs. It was horrible to see, but it does go on doesn't it.

Yes we have completely taken her into our family, she's one of us. I love her to bits! I will take some more photo's soon as she has grown quite quickly since the ones I have put on, she's getting so tall!!

    Talk soon 🙂

    Katty23,

I actually just got my boy Otis two weeks ago. He was my Mother's Day present (we celebrated that yesterday here, don't know if you do it at a later date, I know Sweden does :).) He is 4 months old and yes I love being his new mommy. He is very unusual, and I say that because I of course compare him to our other dogs (a Schnorkie and Dachshund), and to be honest I love the differences…my favorite...the non barking, being that the two other dogs are very yappy, I love that trait. He has been very sweet, not destructive at all, I am waiting for that to happen, but so far so good. I guess maybe the two other dogs keep him on his toes.
Keep us updated on her tests and all that. Otis came from probably clear/normal parents but I am still going to do the testing to be absolutely sure and ready if he were to turn out affected.
