  • so what does that mean? (sorry…i dont know the lingo, lol. Im not Basenji smart i guess)

Like a sore …. that they keep "worrying", licking, bothering with... starts out as something really really small and gets bigger and bigger the more they are after it...

Or like a bite that they itched for a while... like if you get an itch and keep at it till it is open and raw.....

  • If I look close at the picture, seems that there is lots of red around the area that seems to be darker then just pink skin… at least from the picture....

  • Looks like a bug bite and then the 'worrying' started to me.

could be… but it certainly now looks like a hot spot/lick sore..... and one of those that they will keep "worrying" and will get bigger and bigger... One of the best things I have found to dry them up and keep them from licking is Tea Tree Oil....

  • It does look like he's been licking that area. Hot spots can spread before you know it. I've always had to use something to clear them up because on my dogs, they've never cleared up on their own. I use whatever the vet prescribes–cream or spray (usually has cortozone or something in it to relieve the itch or whatever induces the dog to lick).

  • Tea Tree Oil stops all licking… tastes terrible (and it smells too) I have never found a cream or spray that they don't lick...... usually I have found that by the time it is a lick sore, there really is no itch left.. it has become a habit....

  • ok thanks so much!

  • Our Max get's hot spots that look exactly like that on the picture every summer.

We'll give the Tea tree oil a try thanks.

  • I've never heard of using tea tree oil before. I'll have to give that a try too. With Max, I had to put him in his e collar when I used sprays or creams. With Zoey and Tyler–they don't seem to lick at creams (or sprays once they've dried). An old vet of mine used to put something bitter in sprays to keep dogs from licking after you sprayed--it seemed to work pretty well with Max. He'd take one sniff and wrinkle up his nose.

@Pepper said in Elderly Basenji Odd Behavior: The absolutely hardest thing with each of my Basenjis was going through their final week(s) of life. ((hugs)) That's true with all my dogs. I used to say no matter how old, it was still hard. But we lost a 9 mo old Samoyed last December. I'm still crying. No logic.. he didn't know if he lived a long or short life, he just knew he was utterly loved every single day of his life. My heart dog... 6 1/2, lymphoma... had every odds going for her getting a long term remission. She crashed with each protocol and I put her down after 5 mos of her suffering from my desperation to save her. Knowing the end, of course I'd have just kept her comfortable and let her go. Not knowing, I don't know if I would do it different. I hope I would... I hope if it happens again and there isn't a good chance for a cure, I'll let them go. I don't judge anyone who makes a different call, but my heart tells me it was as much my distress at losing her that made me keep on than for her. So I hear you, really clear and with shared pain. I do hope that you aren't shutting off getting another dog. As terrible as losing them is the emptiness of not having one share your life. It doesn't mend the heart, but it does expand it so the holes left are proportionally smaller.

@hotrodruby: frankee my 3 year old has also recently developed a red rash and blistering on the left side of his groin area and was licking it constantly, not sure what it could be, we put a cone on to prevent him from licking it. will be taking him to the vet tomorrow. not sure if it is a yeast infection or rashe from something else. I would bet a yeast infection
