Who has a basenji colony?

Yep, in retrospect, I wish our situation would have worked out more like yours (that was the original plan, get one nice bitch and eventually breed her)...but for various reasons it didn't. So we work with what we have...

  • lvoss, that is a great picture!

Yep, you have to make lemonade out of lemons.

I am sure you will find the right path for you. Sometimes we find it just takes longer to get where we thought we wanted to be.

  • Max 6 years, r/w male

    Cleo 5 years Brindle female

    Penny 3 years r/w female

    Raven 3 years b/w female

    Willy 1 year b/w male

    Jasper 1 year brindle male

All six of our's can't be together, 4 youngest stay in one pack and 2 oldest in a mini pack. I honestly wish they'd all be able to be together…..but it just can't be.
We are not breeeders, my wife does show two of ours(Willy and Jasper) they where bought as show dogs/pets, Raven is a retired show B. and was bought to show as well. Max, Cleo and Penny where bought as strictly pets.

I do think they learn from each other in such numbers, we often say Penny was raised by the B's and not us......I don't know if that's always good.....she's not our best listener.:D
My wife and I and my Son's 21 and 27 all are involved with the B's so we have plenty of people for them to interact with.....someone's always here...........................or I wouldn't have six.
I do think something is lost with the intimacy in these numbers and we make it a point to make sure no one's slighted.:)

  • this is great information. I wondered about the closeness with the pack when the numbers increase….

anyone else with a large basenji family?

  • Wow. I don't think I could do it. LOL Having TWO creates enough havoc – the Basenji-500 through the living room, crashing into walls and furniture, the wrestling, the bickering.... I think I'll have to be satisfied with just two.

  • I have had up to 6, but now 4…
    Maggii - 15 3/4
    OJ - 15 3/4
    Mickii - 14 1/2
Kristii 12 1/2 (and she is Maggii's daugher)

I had Fatia (Mickii's daughter) but she hated Maggii and since I am not set up to run packs, nor do I have the desire to... when she had her litter the perfect home come up... she was placed with one of her pups.. and it has been the best thing for everyone. While I missed her terrible at first... she is the Queen with her daughter as the Princess... so it was the best choice. I had Jamari till he was 4... when he really decided that he didn't like being a pack dog and sharing with my oldest male, OJ... we again got lucky and found the perfect home with someone that had a Parson Russell Terrier, so he was neutered and placed... again, it was the perfect situation....

I know that I will be losing the old kids one of these days and at that time I will bring in a couple of pups... for now, my young ones are co-owned

  • Pat,
Is there a story behind the double i's at the end of the dogs' names?
Or is that just how you like it? It's kind of different~

:D There is sort of a story with the double ii…. it comes from their breeder Ken and Marilyn Leighton... Marilyn loved the double ii in the names... (call names typically, not the registered ones in most cases)... and anyone showing knew that it was a Leighton bred basenji with the "ii"

  • Presently…..

Baron - 11 year old red male
Logan - 11 year old red male, Baron's littermate
Pippin - 9 year old red female, full sibling to the above males
Bindi - 1 1/2 year old tri female
Cory - 6 month red female
Jozie - 4 month red female
    and Jozie's 2 red brothers

Cory and the 2 red boy babies will be rehomed soon and I will be down to 5 dogs, the lowest number I will have had in 16 years. :D

  • Eight Basenjis? Robyn, you are either crazy or amazing, LOL. Maybe a bit of both!

I have decided that two is the perfect number of Basenjis for me to own.
    LOL

    {Until… a few years in the future, someone has the "cutest puppies"! }

  • We just have two- but I LOVE everyone's basenjis… love those pics!!

@planetsaver said in Basenji for me or not ?: Will be a problem to leave him alone, let's say 10 days / month an average of 9 hours a day. Also I do not want to have to much trouble with the neighbours, but I understand he can make some noise sometimes, maybe he can be trained to stay alone and not to bark that much. Why would you even think about training a hunting hound to stay home alone ? I would never let my Basenjis alone for more than 4 hours, and even that is very rare. 3 hours is absolute maximum. Like @tanza, I have sold puppies into apartment environments as long as all other boxes ticked positive. Someone there all the time, proper attention to training, not just leaving the dog alone, especially not as a puppy. btw, he won't bark at all. As you would know if you had really researched the breed. He will cry and scream but not bark ! No. At least you are asking questions but I really think you should find another breed.

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

@Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).

@phoenix3: Looks like a B to me but i think more of a B mix he looks like he has corse hair Maybe be has the size of a cattledog body and a basenji head :) My Aspen is a cattledog/ terrier mix he has the body of a cattledog {the colors} and the height and face of a terrier heres a pic so u can see the colors of the cattledog well one color anyways :D :D phoenix3 - this is Aspen? I'm so amazed at her spots, because my Daisy has spots like Aspens. We know her mother is pure R/W Basenji and she is thought her other half Beagle. One of her other litter mate moms thought Blue Healer (cattledog). But I subscribed to the Beagle. Daisy could be … Cattle Dog I suppose. She's bigger than Duke now at almost 9 months old. I will show her off soon on "Show Off" forum soon.

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
