Treats & Toys that Suck :)

Basenji Talk
  • Well I have to tell you I had posted on another thread how disappointed I was that my b didn't like the nylabones being that they are quite pricey but about 2 weeks ago I doggie sat for my nieces and their dog did like the nyla's so guess what..now Champ likes them too. Funny how this little B can't say no to that of others.

  • Buster Ball? Anyone have pics or can describe this?

  • Besides the buster-ball there is one that is like a dental ball. I've found them hard to come by. I'll try to post a pic of one if I can get my camera working. It's white with green spikey nylon things on it and tastes like bacon!

  • My guys only eat the bacon or meat nylabones….

  • Dash loves any rawhide, pig ears but they are messy and smelly. He has no interest in kongs. He prefers soft toys he can "kill". We try and get them when they are on clearance since I know they won't last long. He also likes tennis balls–especially the squeaky ones. He loves greenies too.

For training treats--ha ha, like I ever do it--we use cat treats like pounce. they are small and easy to use and he loves them.

Tasha- could it have been a booda bone?

  • Lillie's fav treats are: Frosty Paws dog ice-cream, chew eez carvers (beef & chicken flavor); denta stix, Better Than Ears (Pig Ears Alternative) and
    schnoozle (sp?) a Merrick treat.

Her fav toys are: tennis balls, squeaky balls, plastic bags and ANYTHING that is not nailed down that she thinks is hers!:D

Try the second hand store and then wash them before you give them to the dogs. You can usually get them for a buck or under.

  • The Tirebiter rubber tire toy was the worst. Chase got sick from it because he was able to get big pieces off it. I was worried that Zahra would do the same thing but she never got the chance I tossed this toy in the garbage.

  • Ous will mess with Kongs if we use the Kong Stuffing or cheez whiz, but that is it.

The Nylabones are a good choice. Ours like the wishbone shaped ones the best as they can manipulate them with their hands err paws :D to get the best chewing angle though we have a few of teh Galileo super hard nylabones as well which last longer than the standard wishbones. When we got the puppy, we got her a puppy Nylabone and she did not like it, instead she went straight to teh Galileos laying around. Basenjis are some chewing dogs.

  • Goober likes the hard rubber balls. and pig ears (i've never found them to be messy) and stuffed toys and socks and underwear and beer cans and cats and bats and bubbles and scented candles and this huge squeeky donut i found at pet smart and bills and my paycheck and elephants and bears and airplanes and spaceships and cardboard boxes and…. ok, maybe I am getting carried away. But he really isn't interested in his Kong.

  • Mine love chicken jerky strips. Love them.

They don't like anything that is baked–like dog cookies. They just lick them and leave them. I was forever buying them fancy type cookies and I would always get that "reject" look on their face.

  • Wyatt will ignore all of his toys for a small water bottle with rocks in it.
I wish I would have known that before I bought a bunch of toys for him.

Hi there -- not sure if everyone uses this strategy but i soak some kibble in water and mix in a little peanut butter (so that simba isn't getting too much salt) and then stuff the Kong with that before freezing -- lasts longer and still has the same nutrients as his meals. We have the puppy and the classic and I think they're effectively the same. He also LOVES the blue kong squeaky ball. @schmerla

So far Shaye's favorites are the "no stuffing" animals with squeaky toys at each end - she has a squirrel and a beaver - she runs around squeaking them - strange thing, when her puppy teeth were out and she was getting her big teeth, for a while she had trouble making them squeak and she would toss them in the air and drag them around running full-out, then jump on them and try to get them to squeak again. She also has a set of hard plastic keys on a ring that she enjoys tossing and chasing (and getting us to toss for her of course. Her favorite game - reverse fetch.

Last week I tried this frozen treat idea with my 4 and they loved it. Tools: Ziploc Bag. Water. Goodies. (For medium to large dogs) Take a ziplock bag, toss in a few goodies such as 2 baby carrots, small pieces of some pupperoni, a couple table spoons of wet dog food, a few kibbles of dry dog food or other treats that they like. (Just a dab will do ya) Then add in some water. You can also add a little bit of Tang or Crystal Light sometimes. To keep variety some days fill it with a lot of water (make a big block) some days just add a cup or two. When you fill 1/2 a bag or less you can place it different ways in the freezer so it makes different shapes once it freezes. This should be ice they have to get through to get the treats, not just a bag of frozen treats. You can also toss in a Nylabone or other toys that can handle being frozen. You can also use a cheap plastic food dish and place a toy or treats in there and freeze. Takes longer for them to get the goodies out since the bowl blocks access to all the sides. For smaller dogs just add less treats and water. For small animals use an ice cube tray and toss in a treat or two per cube. Don't forget just tossing some ice in the water bowl is also entertaining! This can get messy so please be aware of the fact that ice melts if you have carpets. This is better for floors you can clean easily or outdoors.

You could also try the small RC cars. The B's really like it as well as this little helicopter thing I have. They also like my furry blue pig-but they can't have that one!!

@Gooby: When I walk Goober in the park I have to contantly correct him when he tries to eat goose poop. I trained him with a Mr. Hanky the Christmas Poo doll. IMO, now would be a good time for Gooby and you to attend a Puppy Class. They will teach you commands like "leave it" and many more obedience commands followed up with a very high value treat. One much too yummy than that old goose poop! :)

Sanitized bone should be fine… however like you said, these days I would not trust the "goo"... .... especially now that they have found that for many of the foods that "claimed" they didn't have rice, wheat, corn as the protein source, they really did.... or on the package it was listed as "protein source" that turned to be one of the above glutens...
