Martingale collar question

Basenji Talk
  • I just bought a martingale collar. I am wondering how to adjust it properly. When it is in the closed position, should it be tighter than a regular collar or should I be able to fit two fingers in when the collar is tight? I want to make sure I do what is best for my little girl.

    Thanks,
    Brenda

  • Hi!

Is the buckle type of the snap type? I'm not sure which one you purchased. I always leave just enough room to fit two fingers. I know with puppies, their necks are still small and two fingers might seem like a lot of room. I would just make sure their heads are not able to slip out.

  • When you pull a martingale tight, the two rings that attach with the smaller loop should not touch. There should be at least about two inches between the two rings. When the collar is not being tightented it should be loose on the neck. But not so loose that the dog can get their mouth on it to chew it.

I hope that explains it well?

  • And yes, when it is being pulled, it should be tighter than a regular collar, so that they can't wiggle their head out.

  • That explains it well.
Next question, is it a bad idea to use it on a puppy? Zuri is 4 1/2 months old.

  • @cleopatra:

i don't think so…that is what we use on any age...

  • On a side note, we found the cutest martingale collars on ebay. They are made by "ifitwags".

Mine are naked in the house, but they are older and not inclined to leave, even if a gate is left open. We wear Nick Russell Safety-choke, similar in theory to martingale in that it snugs up when the dog pulls. We walk in harnesses, it is safer for their old necks and spines.

I have used Nick Russell's collars for many years and they do not wear out. I have never had even the most wily basenji slip out of one and escape. And he will custom-make them for you if you send your ribbon to him. We are lucky that so many good products are available, everyone is bound to find something to fit your needs.

You got to love companies that stand by their products..I have had a Lupine collar sent back too, curtesy of Otis, got it back within a week..and yes, only a few parts were left.. I will wait and order one of these for when I have a new basenji neck to wrap it around…

@Jarodkjv: Since someone is always home with the dogs a better choice may be the Playsafe collar, it is designed for daycare type settings. It won't open by itself but it has velcro tabs that can be pulled open easily even if the dogs are tangled up. The advantage would be that you could use it to hold them without worrying about it accidently opening. But it's not really designed to have a leash hooked to it so you would have to put a regular collar on them if you were going to take them out. That looks like a great alternative and I do think I'll give them a try. Although the dogs wear regular collars in the house, we always use martingales or sporn harnesses when we walk them. I found the website interesting and was fascinated by the dog cold weather gear. Don't need it here but it was still fascinating. @Barklessdog: What is the typical basenji neck size?? We did the 10-15" for both Nexa and Leo.
