    @mike67 My girl was called Mbera because that is the Congolese name for Piano. She was a Tri and her photo is in my profile. She was about 9 months old and she was chewing on a stick! I never used her Congolese Name but did call her Antigone because like her namesake, she refused to negotiate. Since nobody could properly pronounce her name I called her Tiggy. When she passed it felt like I had lost my child.

    Eventually they seem to sort of name themselves. The right one will feel right. My daughter named our first one Sayblee. She took weeks to decide (9 yr old) and drove me nuts.

    2nd one I named Arwen (yeah Lord of the Rings). She didn't ROOOO properly, she said RRRRR. So the ARR wen fit.

    Cara I named for a character from the Sword of Truth series.

    Our Samoyed was harder... my daughter wanted to name him Moose (pamplemoose... french for grapefruit) but we had just lost Merlin and her dad and I kept calling him Merlin and being sad so she changed it to Spencer (Criminal Minds). Oddly, after a month, we just eased back into Moose.

    So try a few out, see if they fit the dog, if they trigger happy or good responses. Dogs adjust... so if you go through a few names, they don't care. They are attached to being called, not what name you use.

    Akila Grace is lovely.
    Shadow is cute.
    Skeeter reminds me of mosquitoes or the aliens from Fallen Sky.

    The only one that will know the RIGHT name is you. Do we get pictures of her? :)

    Just personal but Akila Grace seems elegant and quite wonderful. Gets all of my votes.

    Hi Mike67, I'm liking Skeeter coz I like shortened names. Our B's registration name is Cotterpin/Sweet Child O Mine (swedish line) and the breeder called her Izzy (in honour of the Guns n Roses band member). Our B's brother is Axel. Now, I just couldn't go with Izzy as I was never much into Guns n Roses so I called her Pippi (Long-stocking - and she has lovely white stockings too). Akila reminds me of the Queen song 'she's A killer queen (Akila), gunpowder laser beam' . If your dog is called Akila Grace, then calling her from across the park might be a mouthful. Have fun finding a name and, Im sure, she'll end up with the right one! 🧡 Here's Pippi at 6 months with those stockings.

    Basenjis in my house always seem to name themselves. Call names, that is. Hoover - that is what she does. Could also have been called vacuum cleaner. Keeper - because he was the one we kept. Their dam - Trouble - was a tri and did she ever know she was special !

    The registered names of all of ours is a Swahili word which describes the character or attributes of a Basenji.

    Best is two syllables - for when you are calling them to you and they are playing deaf.

    I agree, dogs tend to name themselves. Regardless of what you decide to name them, a nickname may appear and become the most used name. Some of my dogs went by a shortened version of their registered names, some did not. And of course some got called very uncomplimentary things on occasion! ;-)

    One of our sisters is called Bintu (Swahili for daughter - Binti for calling her). The other one's official name is Elinor (Arabic for light of god). To find a short name that was connected to that, we went from Elinor to Eleonora (the European version), and from there to Lela (Spanish abbreviation for Eleonora). And a Lela she is 100%.

    My undergraduate degree was in geophysics with a minor in applied math. I name all my Basenjis after Indian mathematicians. My current Basenjis are Madhava of Sangamagrama (Madhava for short) and Bramagupta (Bramagupta for short). They do respond to their "short" names.

Like @tanza, I have sold puppies into apartment environments as long as all other boxes ticked positive. Someone there all the time, proper attention to training, not just leaving the dog alone, especially not as a puppy. btw, he won't bark at all. As you would know if you had really researched the breed. He will cry and scream but not bark ! No. At least you are asking questions but I really think you should find another breed.

    @tanza She's from Southeastern Bénin, very close to the border with Nigeria. We didn't set out to get a basenji, but the more I learn about the breed, the more I realize that's exactly what she is! Thanks, everyone, for the explanations. We want to register her with PAL so she can do lure coursing. (She's got quite the chase instinct...) We don't need a kennel name, but I was more asking just for my own curiosity. If she were to have a "kennel," it would be the streets of the region where we got her, the Plateau Department, since there's very little human intervention in dog reproduction in that part of the world. :)

    Loki's picky eating comes and goes, even after Kaia got here. He has had no problem letting her finish his dinner when he didn't feel like eating. I've added yogurt and/or pumpkin to his kibble and that has helped him finish his dinner. They are oddballs in that they will sit and wait for the other to finish, then switch bowls to make sure every last bit has been cleaned up. They also frequently trade bully sticks with one another, but higher value stuff like meaty bones are a no-no to come near. Last month I started them both on Nupro and he actually gets excited at meal times! That has never, ever been the case prior to adding that in. I haven't had to utter the dreaded "finish your dinner" in weeks ;)

    I read your blog and find it kind of confusing and ….. your comment about "messing with ..." hmmmmmmm.... Anyhow, yes, it is so cool when you come across another basenji, because they totally understand each other and how they want to play. We were fortunate once to have another basenji play chase with Kipawa at a dog park. I just don't think there are many basenjis in the Lower Mainland. :(

    @Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).

    Dogs learn quickly, especially if their former home was not so nice. Then a new name is perfect. We changed Nicky's name from Nyako, picked a "sound alike" and she learned it pretty quickly, well, as much as some basenjis ever "learn" their name. Some days she doesn't recognize it at all, haha. Eddie was Skippy, I looked at him and called him Fast Eddie and it stuck. That boy knows his name all the time! And do tell, what is the awful name???
