Who has a basenji puppy?

Basenji Talk
  • Keoki, red and white, is 4 months.

  • Great! I wish we had a section for puppy chat….

I thought Cairo was finished with teething and now he is dropping molars...

He also has come into a new phase where the energy level has tripled in the evening as well as his manly stuff....

anyone else experiencing energy spurts at 5 months?

    how about the girls?

  • Hi I am waiting to pick up my puppy Mdjai. He is a 5.5 month old tri-color.

  • We have Daisy, almost 5 mos old. She is a tri-color mix. Her energy level is up there. She's either sleeping, chewing or rough-housing with Duke.

  • I have Damisi, a b/w almost 4 mos. The energy level is definitely up there and she's a real pest to the others. Most dogs will teeth until approx 9 mos. with various teeth.

  • etz, be forewarned that there is serious molar teething going on….

Cairo loves to chew on teething nylabones and my socks.....

Well there is quite a community of puppies here....

Please post pics of your pup so we can see them....and their weight if you know it....

  • I have Wyatt, a 5 month old tri-color. He is 16lbs right now. He is full of energy that I try to burn off with walks/running.

  • Oh, I didn't post Keoki's weight. As of last week he was 13 lbs; he is 4 mos old. Photos are posted in my section of the gallery. And he has been WAY TOO ENERGETIC

  • Oops, something happened.. my post send before I wanted it to.

Keoki has been a bundle of energy lately. If he is not sleeping, he's annoying the daylights out of the other two dogs, or looking for things to get into.

  • We have Chevy. She is 5 months old , she's cory's sister from Robyn at Sherwood Basenji's.

  • We have Kona, he's 5.5 months old.

I just had him at the vet and apparently he lost all his teeth…by what she says? haha

And yes, he also is EXTREMELY energetic...the weather has been cold and rainy the last few days so he has been driving his mommy nearly insane :)

  • Daisy's stats:

5 mos old on May 21st.
    19 lbs
    16" to shoulder

Her adult front upper/lower teeth are in. Both upper canines are lost one adult has come in. She still has lower baby canine. The baby teeth seem to come out fairly quickly - don't they?

  • I have Zuri, she is a 4 month old Tri. She weighs in at 10lbs right now. Full of energy??? We got our first glimpse of the Basenji 500 the other night….too funny! Love our little girl!

    Brenda

  • I have a 5 and half month old little girl. She is a red/white and her name is Akili.

  • Goober is 14-16 weeks and more than 12 lbs. he is about 14-15 inches tall.

  • From the way everybody is talking your dogs are going to be big. I have Abby she is 11 1/2 mos, she is 14" and only weighs 18 lbs, I just don't think she will get bigger, her mom looks to be pretty good sized as is her dad. I don't know if she was a runt or not. Will she beef up between 1 and 2 years?

She will get more body, maybe….., but she is pretty much done growing..

  • I have found that there are several basenji body types that are common…

short and stocky, long and lanky, and the slender sleek basenjis with the almost greyhound look about them with gigantic ears. I am sure they are all variations within the breed standard, maybe some have more african blood than others.

Beta, my girl was alwasy 19lbs from 1-1/2 years through adulthood. She was a small basenji compared to the other girls she played with.

I believe boys should not weigh more than 25lbs for the breed standard. Caesar is 24lbs. and has been that weight all of his adult life.

If I remember correctly, after they are 7months or fixed they tend to look like string beans for a while or gangly teenagers. Then they start filling in or building muscle.

Cairo weighed 15.9lbs at his neuter date (almost 6months). He is still smaller than Caesar but proportioned like a mini b. All of his teeth are finally in. I have noticed that his head has gotten larger, but his chest is still small. I have also noticed that now he will eat more food than before so I expect another growth spurt is coming.

  • The basenji standard describes the ideal basenji, it does not have maximums or minimums in it. The general rule of thumb with height is +/- an inch. So girls should be between 15-17 inches and boys between 16-18 inches.

  • I dont know the actual breed data, thanks for adding it:)

Not allowed on the couch was the first rule we made and the first we broke, I only made it to please the hubby, but know I wanted snuggles and cuddles so not sad it went out the window. I just wasn't willing to spend sooo much time correcting Kaiser over the rule that I knew he was going to win and seemed to be wrong as he is all about human contact and just glad he loves to sleep in his crate and the bed rule never got broken. Knowing how Kaiser yearns to have human contact and how he likes to be up high I don't think I would have made it a rule in the first place, but if you stick to it and give your puppy a comfy, warm, high, sunny spot and lot's of cuddles it may learn in time to love the spot you have chosen for it, but will say good luck with that. If he has stones, he may not be marking but may not be able to make it outside in time. I had an elderly girl who could not make it outside in time and as soon as I heard her wake up, I picked her up and took her outside. I had a young female who had urinary crystals and before she was treated as soon as she got to the door she went and she was having to go every couple hours. Jennifer

@khanis: Sorry you have to be ripped apart like a common backyard breeder. You have dogs with good breeding behind them… Common back yard breeder: has a pet (or breeding pair, gag) limited knowledge about genetics and testing no knowledge of pedigrees and thinks having any champions anywhere in the pedigree (champion bloodlines is how both BYB and puppymillers advertise such dogs who have ANY champions in last 4 generations) makes the dog worthy of breeding little to no health testing Sorry but this person, nice or not, is a common backyard breeder and frankly, quite a BIT less knowledgeable than most byb today. ONE HOUR on the internet reading and this person would have found both BCOA and health issues. This person either didn't GIVE A DAMN to research or is so utterly knowledgeable that he didn't even KNOW to try to read up on health issues. He seems to want to do right, but in this day and age, it is negligent that he didn't already read some basics on his own. If he has the ability to find this forum to ADVERTISE his puppies, he certainly could have found info before breeding. No one RIPPED this person. No one was harsh. But yes, this person is a backyard breeder. And considering the facts presented, I think everyone here was very nice because it really does seem this person is open to learning and doing things right. As for your outside raised dogs… glad you lucked out. Won't bother to show you studies indicating yours is not the norm. Perhaps the puppies owners spent massive time with them, which obviously compensates for them being outside. This person couldn't even be there for the whelping, for crying out loud. Your encouraging a novice owner to keep them outside when they truly need all the socializing they can get to compensate for lack of experience... well I find that a little alarming. I appreciate you think your dogs came out fine, but you probably got a pup from experienced owners who truly DID go the extra mile to make sure outside raised dogs got enough attention.

When we say responsible for the dogs forever - we do really mean forever. I have animals returned to me when they were 9 years old because of significant family issues or death of the owner - I currently have a 12 year old and a 7 year old that now live with me. Think about what that means - because even those of us who are prepared for that - really are never prepared for the impact on our families houses and other dogs. You say you want to keep 2 - be advised that the everyone hanging out together in basenji world is NOT the norm. Most can have 1 male and 1 female - if you are planning on keeping 2 - you may have a problem - not right away but eventually you are likely to do so. I am not sure that I remember who or where Chaos came from but fanconi testing and eye testing for PRA would be critical as well as thyroid screening. What titles does she have - is she a fast as the wind Field CH or Obedience or rally or conformation CH. That would allow you to have evidence that she has characteristics that are valuable to the breed as a whole and quite frankly if all you want are a couple more basenjis - there are many many out there that could use a forever home. In any event - think about it - it's not as easy as you think - if you are going to do it right - and finding good homes is also not as easy as you think. You may not have the experience in weeding out puppy mills who might want your pups and living where you do - you are in the midst of some that do produce basenjis.

I wish I could see this. My dial-up service is soooo slowwww! But the "chunky" basenji pup sounds like its a funny one. I have to try and remember to open this link up at work.
