Tanza Basenjis Breeding Plans for 2012

Breeder Talk

  • 2nd Breeding done yesterday…. Ultrasound October 25th

  • looking forward to seeing photos in Nov of the happy babies.

  • Just curious- what does FedEx label a box like that? SPERM inside ? DON'T TIP?

    Just wondering, lol

  • LOL Chealsie!!!!! Not labeled anything special, there is special packaging that the Vet uses as the sperm is chilling and spun down, so the container is pretty small! It is the dry ice that takes up most of the package.

  • Lol, for all I knew it could have been labeled "LIVE ANIMALS"! I didn't know if rules and regulations state that anything of that nature needed to have special labeling for the handler. That's good to know, gives me a chuckle though that the FedEx deliverer didn't know what he was handling
    :D

  • Oh no, not puppy season again! My husband wanted a puppy last year but I was too late to contact anyone and reserve, then we adopted Chipley and filled our quota.
Don still talks about wanting a naughty puppy, he is home full time so he deserves one, but 4 is way too many, and Nicky would never forgive us.

I would love to VISIT a houseful of puppies. I'm sure yours will be amazing, Pat.

I have 4 and I'm perfectly sane. (Of course one is a malinois and she's crazier than all the basenjis put together)

    No, really I am.

    I AM too sane.

Uhm, oh, well, okay, maybe you're right.

  • Ultrasound complete! And the count is SEVEN….. pictures will be on my website this evening!

  • Whoo hoo, that's awesome news!!! Seven tri puppies, you should be certifiably insane!!!!

I can't wait to see the pics and hear the great news of their arrival

    CONGRATULATIONS

  • Pictures of the ultrasound now posted at www.tanzabasenjis.net

And yes I will be certifiably insane! Litter should be due November 27-29, 2012…. might even get to have a "quiet" Thanksgiving dinner"... but will be a bouncing Christmas and New Year!!!!!!!!!

Oh and in case you are interested... I was DONE when they got to 5!!!!!!!!!!!

  • How is the expectant mom doing?? I'd love to meet a pregnant basenji..I'd imagine they look like pot bellied pigs!!

Did she take well to the ultrasound?

  • Right now she really doesn't look any different and she is doing great… she showed this past weekend (a bit thicker in the waist), but she is still chasing squirrels... eating like she usually does.... of course talk to me when she is about a week from birth... she should look like a stuffed pig... I was pretty sure the breeding took, her nipples have enlarged and turned pink.... that didn't happen with her other seasons... but not always a sure sign.

  • Congratulations. Looking forward to puppy pictures in December!

  • Looking forward to hearing about all the mischief that 7 basenji puppies can come up with :D

    Congratulations!

  • The theme of the little should have something to do with mischief because that's sure to be what they bring!

  • LOL, don't do theme's with my litters.

And as we say, be careful what you name them…. as many times they will be THAT name... Case in point, Day Trip to Tanza-Jamaa, Jeff is forever "tripping" over Trip!

  • Tri babies are definately my weakness! I can't wait to see the little guys. Good luck to you and the babies!

  • Congrats Pat, hope you have many puppies! Or, as many as you would like anyway!

  • LOL, Arlene…... I would be happy with 5.... 7 is lots of work once the eyes open! Hope that Momma to Be, C-Me is ready for this!!

  • C-me doesn't have to be ready! The midwife does-and that would be you! I had enough with six of them after 5 weeks! I would hate to see 7 or more!

Seems like the DNA sample would be easier to get too. I guess the advantage of the sperm count is that you at least know if the sire is fertile or not. Good luck, can't wait to see pictures of the pups to be.
  • Why do breeders mix Basenjis with other breeds?

I have to agree with Janneke. There are some sport mixes that are very responsibly bred. Most often these dogs are bred for Flyball, and involve a herding breed mixed with a terrier. The border-staffy mixes mix the drive of the Staffy with the intelligence and trainablility of the herding dogs, but also to mitigate a bit of the herding breed sensitivity. I think a team of 4 Borderstaffys holds the flyball record right now? They are supposed to be great for what they are bred for. Super-fast, drivey, but with the "off-switch" that is missing in a lot of terriers. They supposedly breed pretty consistent, and the breeders heath test, and try to be responsible. The border-jack is also really popular in flyball and agility. They are smart, super drivey and hyper. As far as I know, neither of these mixes has been picked up by the BYB's and Puppy Mills. Neither of these mixes should go to non-sports homes. Lots of mushers mix greyhound or whippet into their northern breeds to add some speed to their teams. Or they often choose to breed mixed breed dogs that are superior lead dogs or the like. I see no problem with purpose-bred mixes, as long as their breeders are as responsible with their planning and placements as we would expect from any responsible purebred breeder.

4 sounds like a very manageable number.. I will keep my fingers crossed that they will come out in colors wished/hoped for. Either way they will be absolutely adorable, I am sure of that.

Based solely on these photos, I would rank Bella and Dean the highest but Clark and Flash are certainly not far behind. This is a fabulous litter. I love them all.
