Any body else had a problem with Pannas ??

    Sandie was diagnosed with Pannas today …. It all started in Aug. 2012 when i noticed a white lession on her eye ... that eye had a lot of discharge also... i got her in to see the vet that same day. At that time the vet checked her for a ulcer using the stain and a light and set her a surgery appoinment to scrape the ulcer off ... I have been using a drop in that eye since then and finally now it is healing. Late friday night i notice the discharge in the other eye and upon inspecting it i see the small redish white raised formation in her eye, called the vet first thing Saturday morning, set an appointment for today (monday) she sent me to see a eye specialist to get a second opinion ...I was able to get in to see the eye specialist today and she said with out a doubt its Pannas.
    It is a immune disorder where her eye is attacking itself, she will have to take eye drops the rest of her life to control the lessions, avoid bright sun, and no more riding with the windows down in the car and her head hanging out unless she has on goggles ... i dont know if she will get used to the goggles she hates things on her head.
    Mostly i wanted to share this so everyone is aware if you see any thing that resembles a catarac or lession on the eye please get it checked it could be a ulcer or pannas either of which causes blindness if not treated in time.

    Has the breeder been advised? This is often considered a hereditary disease

    Sandie is a mix Basenji/Rodesian … And i dont know who the breeder was ... I was wanting information on it ... the good the bad and the ugly ... the vet made it sound like a life long struggle of eye meds and a ointment to use daily ...

    Everything that I have read indicates what the Vet told you was correct. Was the Vet a certified Ophth. Vet? Or your regular Vet? You might want to just get a 2nd opinion from a Specialist if that is the case.

    I first took her to my regular vet she sent me to a certified ophth. vet. for a second opinion… my regular vet thought it was a ulcer which was what sandie was treated for the first time in Aug. She goes back for a recheck on the 31st .... i went on amazon.com and found the ointment i was given for nightly .. and orderd a 6 pack of it. also bought her a pink pair of Doggles which she isnt very fond of but like any thing else new to her she will get used to it ...

    Really glad it is something fixable. Sometimes dogs with heart failure or cancer do that, but as he had this before, sounded like recurrence. I would ask why the different drugs... if bacterial, he needs antibiotics to clear it up. Steroids can help with allergic reaction/inflammation, but won't do squat for infection. Are they suggesting one and then the other if first doesn't work? Good luck!

    Test results got back today….yay no thyroid issues....just fat puppy I guess. I will have to watch exactly what she eats and cut her back from there if she does not start to lose some of the 'winter weight'.

    @ljsabo: My B does the same thing. He will start peeing and not finish and then quickly lick himself. He has done this for years but otherwise seems healthy and very normal. My friend who has a 9 month old b puppy stated hers does this as well so it could be a B thing?? No, he licks the pee as it's coming out and if I turn his head away he stops and walks away.

    My previous beastie developed thyroid problems (and it took the vet a long time to figure it out too) but he wasn't put on soloxine. I can't remember the name of the meds but it started with a b. He never had any siezures and he was on the meds for probably five years or so.

    how big is the lump? it could be as simple as a pore clogged with oil. it can feel like a cyst and by massaging it you can get it to head over time. Or try a warm wash cloth. Shot reactions, like they said, are on the shoulder blades. Caesar has a reaction to a shot and his shoulder blew up to a softball size. The vet tech that gave a shot didnt insert it in the correct manner and it dissolved with time and a Benadryl shot. Does your pup react when you touch it like it might hurt? What size is it? When Cairo was being neutered the vet pulled two teeth (canine and molar) that were not completely out or pushed out by the new teeth. They didnt charge me that much because he was already asleep. This is a great time for them to inspect and fix anything. They charged me $50 for pulling a baby canine that didnt come out and a molar that was on its way out.

    Rascal has some serious stomach issues. The last time we fell off the wagon and didn't monitor her food intake well she developed pancreatitis. One piece of information our vet gave us, that I've begun to follow religiously, is to check the fat content in all of your treats and food. For a sensitive stomach it should be around 4-6 percent. Anything more is hard on the digestive tract. After checking most of the treats in the food aisle, and believe me I have, you'll see that the range falls anywhere from 4 up to 16 percent fat or more.
