Merrick Fans!!!

  • Merricks dog food here is $2 a can and the dry is about $14, I think I will have to check out Pet Supply Plus. Sahara loves it, she was standing by the counter as I was getting her dinner tonight. What I paid here is pricey but I will get it if I can't find it cheaper. Virginia is about an hours drive from here so I will go there, my doctors are there and my dentist, I am there all the time so it won't be a special trip. Thanks for the info, this forum is so informative. Sahara loves the Grammy's Chicken Pot Pie, yum, yum!!!:D

  • I recently started Lillie on Merrick food also. When I got her from a local shelter on Jan. 21 I started her on Nutro Max food (which is what I had given my previous dog). After the recall, I went back to my local pet store and was informed that not all of the Nutro Max food was recalled. So, I bought the food that wasn't recalled but decided to wean her off that and start with Merrick food. She loves it! There are about 15 different kinds. Alittle pricey-each can ranges from $ 1.69 - $ 1.79 depending on where I purchase it. I also just started her on the dry food but I can't remember how much it was. She likes the dry food also.

  • Nik and Storm love, love, love Merrick's canned food. The only one they've turned their noses up at is Working Dog Stew (I can't blame them - it's tripe blech). I haven't tried the Merrick's dry food, but canned is a big hit. I pay between $1.75 and $1.85 per can. I wish there was a Pet Supplies Plus around my area - $1 a can - the pup's (and my wallet) would be in heaven! :)

  • Jodie, Do you know that if you add alittle water 1/2 cup to 1 cup dry and stir the food will make it's own gravy. I tried this on Sahara, but she wants the wet also mixed with it. I am going to wheen her off the wet over time and give her only dry. I have been told that dogs prefer wet food and once you give them wet they won't go back to just dry. I am going to try, but if my Queen wants wet, and holds out, I will probably keep up the dry/wet mix. What can I say, she has trained me well. haha:D

  • Yes, she does have you trained… know that when Sahara is hungry she will eat....ggg....

  • I've been looking for a new food for Tayda and Lenny… I think I'll try Merricks based on this thread! Thanks! I've been rotating them on the Avoderm, Solid Gold, and Natures Variety... along with some raw meat, pureed veggies, raw eggs, cotage cheese, olive oil.... etc etc.

  • Thanks for the info. I usually give Lillie a can of wet food in the morning and dry in the late afternoon. I will add water to the dry and make a gravy. Thanks.

  • We have a great place where we get our Merricks both dry and wet. They just LOVE the stuff. Every kind is a big hit. We buy the wet food by the case 24 cans for $20 and the 15lb dry bag is about $18.

JB Wholesale Pet Supplies will deliver the food so it may work out for you. Check out their website.

  • I pay $1.79 a can, which lasts about 3 days.

  • I just opened a can of Merrick's Smothered Comfort to mix with the furkids Innova dry food for dinner, that stuff looks and smells great.

I am not going to lie, I was tempted to heat it up in the microwave for myself :D I didn't make it to the grocery store today so I had to order a pizza (there is nothing in my house, Old Mother Hubbard has nothing on me my cabinets echo! Hubby is still deployed and I eat out a lot, Farm Fresh has an awesome salad bar! LOL!). Pizza just doesn't look as good as this stuff.

    LMAO!!! HAAAAAHH

:D LOL!! Yeah - I'm amazed at the ingredients too. I'd like to order the Thanksgiving Day Dinner. Duke goes crazy for it. I should sneak some to him - He hasn't had any since Daisy - I don't want to whack her digestive tract b/c she's still young and we're still not steady with the house training. Last thing I want to clean up is a nasty mess.

  • Ziggy and Zoe get Merrick's "Wilderness Blend" twice a day. About 1/2 cup of water on the dry food to make gravy, then I heat it in the microwave for 7 seconds. They LOVE it! ~ Lori ~

  • We pay about $1.70 or so for a can but we can usually get a discount if we buy it by the case for $20.00 & since we only use spoonfulls in their food. It winds up evening out.

  • How much per day do you guys feed Merrick's wet? My older (15 year old) Basenji has gotten really picky. Right now the only thing he'll eat is cooked venision, beef or turkey.

I've tried several of the holistic canned foods and he's turned his nose up at them. Guess I need to try some Merricks.

At 15.. (and I have two 16 1/2 yr olds, one soon to be 15 and one that will turn 13 on Saturday)… you feed them anything they will eat.. period... and if the cooded venision, beef and/or turkey works.. that is what I would feed... period.... IT is a real challenge with these guys in their late senior years...

One thing, cause I just went through it, how are the teeth on your old one?.. because that will really make a difference... and also have you had blood work done recently..? If so how are the liver and kidney values? Both will cause a decrease in eating... and with my 16+ I give them both a pepcid with each meal... Kidney functions that are decreasing will upset the tummy.. and the pepcid will help with that....one pill per day.... so blood work on seniors is very important IMO

  • Alex's teeth are in very good shape. I haven't had any blood work done, but am assuming part of his not eating is due to depression. We recently had to put Alex's partner to sleep (she was just shy of 16) and he hasn't been taking it too well. :( He barooo's constantly to be let in the house when he's not sleeping. He's also had two bouts with Vestibular Syndrome with some residual effects on balance which I'm sure contributes to a loss of appetite.

Well, for Goodness sake! Let him in! :)
You don't really mean that he stays outside, right?

When we're not home he does, and he actually prefers to sleep in his dog house when it's not cold.

@Saving said in Anal Gland Health Diet Adjustment (ideas?): scavenging on walks has increased though and that's quite annoying. LOL, omgosh! The amount of food tossed on the ground is astounding! And doodle will grab it up before I have any idea it's there! I wish I had a picture of the day she pulled a (whole) bagel out of a bush!

I would find out what he scared of or what he dislikes about the car. Is it the car itself, the sensation of being closed in, the movement when the car is being driven? Then work on whatever the problem is, with food. As for food, I use raw duck and vegetables. And I hand-feed all meals, so I never have a problem with not eating/partially eating. I would also recommend hand-feeding for anyone who does have a dog with food issues. Shredded chicken is good (as long as he doesn't have any reactions). But that and some kibble isn't a balanced meal. You may wish to look into a vitamin supplement, specifically something that has a focus on omega 3 (since chicken is high in omega 6), Vitamin C & the B vitamins (because if all he's eating is chicken and kibble, where is his source of vitamin C and the B vitamins?), zinc & copper (same reasons). All the best. EDIT: I just realized this thread is a year old and was bumped by what is almost certainly a bot.

I had a somewhat similar experience. Joey had a seizure which I correlate to taking Simparica. He looked terrible so took him to the vet when the first seizure happened and he was late Stage 2. Put him on Royal Canin kidney kibble and Hills kidney wet food and 4 years later he has only had 1 more seizure and his kidney values have remained constant. I will believe your homemade version is most likely better if you have the correct proportions. All the best to your Bs! Joey will be 15 in November.

8 mos old is still on Royal Canine medium size puppy as recommended by vet. Very interested in how you change up their food. Glad to hear that because I would like to change him from chicken based to something else as adult. Had always been advised not to keep changing food as it was hard on their system. Breeder advised to use high protein and fat dog food (60% protein, 30% fat). What is your opinion on this? I am starting to add 1/2 tsp coconut oil daily to dog food for winter feeding. Advised it had ingredients similar to mother's milk. What say you about this?

@AndrewnShango: …A similar situation happened not long ago with the food brand "Canidae" and many, many dogs had digestive issues due to the change in recipe. I urge you to contact them if there are issues... I'm glad you mentioned this, because Canidae was my other favorite brand…
