If you were going to add another dog….

Basenji Talk
  • Of course I'd get another B… okay, I already did! :) But if I couldn't have another B... My favs are:

    Great Dane
Bulldog - in all their snorty, unhealthy ways

  • I am DYING for another B! and one day . . . . . {crossing fingers}

But if I couldn't have that, I'd love another doberman – my first was SUCH a great dog.

  • I would get a full blooded B as Cali is a Basenji mix. If I could not get another Basenji it would be a Cane Corso or German Shepherd.

  • I would definitely get another B, but also not a puppy! Rumor is 12 weeks now and I feel about 100!!!! But she makes me laugh no matter what!

  • I'd like to get a German Shepherd or Rottweller…
I can't now, coz my mom don't let me get a large dog...
In my future I want to have 5 dogs!!!

  • Just saw this post, and thought it was neat….

I would want another B. If I can't have another B, I think I'd want a Bulldog. There is a Bulldog in our complex that, once Jack got to know him, they love each other sooo much. As soon as they see each other they start pulling on their leashes to come and visit.

  • I got my second B last year, and don't foresee getting another dog for long, long time. These push dh – though he loves them very much -- to the edge, LOL.

BUT, if I did get another, I'd want another B, if it couldn't be a B, I'd still want a doberman!

  • Uhm, well i have 3 basenjis and a malinois. the mali is a fun dog, and it's nice to have a dog that you can take off lead. if i couldn't have basenjis, i'd think about a cirneco or some sort of terrier - maybe an irish. i'd love a chart polski. and if i had a maid, i'd get a samoyed.

  • If we were to add another dog…..which I don't think DH, Cory, or Jayden would tolerate.....it would be another basenji, a boxer or an ibizan hound.

    Pat

  • Oh- the other dog I like is the Puli. Maybe I'd get one of those!

  • @Robin_n_Jack:

Aren't their coats high maintenance? I don't have a clue, it just seems like there'd be a lot of work keeping that from being a huge mess.

Quite different from the B coat anyway!

  • I don't think so- I had been reading about them as well when we got Jack….you don't brush the coat at all, you just twist the "locks" every once in while, from what I remember.....that was a long time ago. I think you also have to trim the hair around their eyes.....otherwise they can't see.

  • Well now that I have 2 b's…I think I'm set for a while.

If I got another dog, it would definitely be another b. If I couldn't have another b for some reason, it would definitely be a Parson Russell Terrier...I have tons of experience with them and to me they are an absolute blast. I've always wanted one that I could train to jump off a boat at a dock, throw him the bow line, and then have him tie the cleat. :D

  • if i couldnt have another B..

GREAT DANE :) a blue one. ive actually researched breeders .. lol

ooorrrr a pit, min pin, or a chihuahua.. a cute one though not an alien looking one. lol

Danes are cool, except for their short lives…..

  • dan would NEVER let me get a great dane. just my dream dog. i think i'd like to have one as a puppy, or just until it got big.. because those things can touch ceilings if they can put their front paws on something. lol i know someone who had one.. it laid on the couch with me and took up the whole thing. i know i have a picture of it.. lol

plus three B's is ENOUGH for me. lol

  • Bs are the breed for me! But if that were impossible. I love Dobies (I have had two), and I'm also kind of partial to German Pinschers and Manchester Terriers (I have never had either breed so I'd have to research them). I love clean lines, short fur, a square stance and a regal-looking appearance. Flopsy-mopsy, cute as they are, aren't for me. A nice temperament would also count big-time.

Our neighbors just got a great dane puppy –from a BYB from the description of the place; puppy is ten weeks old and had never been outside!! :( . He's beautiful, kind of the color of steel.

That said, his sire weighs 180 lbs. and stands TALL.

The family that bought the puppy is very small -- I mean, Dad is not 6 ft,
Mom is maybe 5'4. The two kids left at home are an 18 yr old who is 5'2 and a 13 yr old who is under 5 ft tall.

    Should get interesting......

  • I was attacked once by a Dalmatian/great dane mix. Maybe attacked is the wrong word….
You know how little dogs will hump your leg? This dog got up on its hind legs, put his front paws around my waist, and started going to town.:D I'm not tall, I'm 5'1. That dog was a full head taller than me standing up like that.

  • hahahah yeah i've seen pictures of them putting thier paws on a mans shoulder and touch a kitchen ceiling fan.. lol

they are the most awkward looking puppies.. huuuuge feet and head and a little body lol i saw one at the vet one day.. it had just gotten its ears done.. cuter than cute though :) i wish they were a bit smaller.. lol

one can weigh between 150-200 pounds! and are over 3 foot tall at the shoulder..

that steel color is the blue :) i LOVE them! lol

just type great dane into google and you get some interesting pictures :)

In your position, where you really have to take her out a lot, I understand. And I hope her comfort continues. My point was it is situational need, not dog need to be that social. :) I have a slim chance of that having worked with my current 2, but with my incredibly dog aggressive first one, I'd have been out in a basket muzzle and warning everyone to keep their dogs away.

@JazzysMom: You KNOW William has to be wondering why we don't just throw the darned dogs into the stew pot!! bwahahahaha Because basenjis are too sleek and lean, not enough fat on the little rascals to make good stew, of course!:D

Hollie will hide her treats and her dog food. Her favorite hiding place is under MY pillow in the bed. She has tried to hide her entire food bowl by pushing one of her plush toys with her nose in an attempt to get the toy on top of her food bowl. Why doesn't she just use her mouth to pick it up and place it on the bowl? Silly dog!

That is a great idea, but it should be an adolescent for sure (seems to be the most trying stage). My mom also really liked our dog (the look, the no bark, typical things most people like) and she quickly changed her ideas. We were telling her about the time we had to babysit another dog and the things she did to let us know that she did not like another dog in our house (she did some very naughty things)! My mom said 'wow she is really a manipulating dog'. I said, yeah they are definately not a breed for everyone.

My girl Lacie, does the exact same thing when we goto the dog park. My boy Ozzie will go explore a little bit and watch the other dogs play but not really get involved and he will always come back to me after a minute or two. We have only gone a couple of times but one time he finally got the urge to put him self out there and do his little sumo move and crouch down to play with this one dog, but sadly that dog wasn't interested.
