Red bump on the nose

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Is the bump hot to the touch or feels like normal skin tissue? Maybe it is some type of cyst? Let us know what you find out!

  • @Alex:

She has been sneezing a bit more than usual. We will take her in for a second opinion.

I think that is a good decision

  • I would get a second opinion and if they are not willing to biopsy then at least a fine needle aspiration to see what the cells look like. A fine needle aspiration may show something like a histiocytoma which may just need some antibiotics and time or may show cells that indicate cancer and require a surgical approach.

  • Agree with all the forgoing - please let us know the outcome. I do hope all goes well.

  • Thanks everyone for the good advice. Kiya does not seem to mind it and it's not getting bigger. We will see what the other vet sayd. Found this interesting article and the bump on this dogs nose looks exactly like Kiyas, so let's hope its histiocytoma.

  • Wishing you the best, things like that are so scary

  • Hoping it's something simple!

  • The bump has gone away after a month and several weeks wearing the cone. All was left is a small white scar on the black portion of her nose, which eventually has gone away too. Our guess it was some kind of allergic reaction.

  • Good to hear Alex!

  • Good news! Thanks for the update.

  • This was posted back when I was not on much so I missed it. Glad it is all okay, but I do have to caution that waiting that long– had it been cancer, would have been the difference between -- literally -- life and death. Of course, since it wasn't growing, it wasn't as much risk but nasal cancers can grow internally and not bulge for a long time. I do have to say though when I saw it, I thought spider bite. My Rottie got one like that, vet felt sure it was a bite. It also turned white, but I put neem oil on it and it soon got it's original color back.

  • We did a biopsy a week into it and it was not cancerous, so waiting for the bump to go away was the only other option. I though surgery would be too intrusive in the nose area.

Kiya had to endure two weeks of wearing the cone day and night to prevent her from scratching her nose.

She seems to get all kinds of things around her nose, just recently she got bitten by a bee nosing around in the grass and was back into the cone for a week.

I would take him to an opthalmologist for an exam though because there are lots of thing that it could be besides this. He could also be having really bad allergies that is causing inflamation of his eyes. Jennifer

@curlytails: Interesting. Does anyone know why winter nose happens? I don't think it gets wintery enough where I'm at to observe any difference… I wonder if its similar to human skin color & in the winter they just have less exposure to the sun & their nose lightens like we become more pale in the winter?

No dog is perfect. If the male you are looking at has a lot of great qualities in looks, character and in health, and he compliments your female well, I wouldn't worry about the light nose or eyes. Yes, the pups could inherit them, so that's a choise you will have to make :) I wouldn't exclude a nice male from breeding only based on the colour of his eyes…

I prefer a stick since it will dry much faster. Using a lotion or cream allows your dog to lick it right off which defeats the purpose. Make sure its water proof. A small amount will not harm your dog. I've checked with my vet and others and they all agree. My boy has a section on his nose which is a light pink. Anytime he goes into the sun it turns a bright red. I know its got to be painful. The sunblock has really helped.

I don't know if they are in your area, (I doubt it) but Nala had bites on her from black flies that were red and itchy and more of a ringed look to them. I took her to the vet immediately, only to be told what they were! Boy did I feel silly…I'm sure you'll get to the bottom of it...

My first Basenji would have nice bright white eyes. I would take her mnt biking with me and her eyes would be red and watery. My other 2 never experienced this. It's probably allergies. The older I get, the worse my allergies get. I have also developed new allergies. Things like Russian Olive never bothered me, now my eyes start flowing and my sinuses become highly irratated. If the concentration is high, I have trouble breathing. Talk your vet about OTC allergy medications and dosage. If your Basenji shows the same symptoms indoors and they do not improve, consider having your ducts cleaned and an electronic air cleaner installed.
