Lure Coursing- Winter Challenge between Atlanta and Chattanooga- Need More Basenji's

Basenji Talk

  • Hey all!

Calling all Basenji's that like to course! And if you've never done it but want to or interested in learning more… the Winter Challenge between Atlanta and Chattanooga would be a great event to attend. The event is Dec 28, 29, 30, and 31st (Wed-Sat). Not all days are required, so you can choose to participate in 1, 2, 3, or all 4 days.

Right now, looks like we'll have at least 4 Basenji's, but hopefully more.

If you're interested, please let me know and I can shoot you more info. The link to the premium (form to submit participation) is below: http://www.toddbirchfield.com/premiums/gang/WinterChallenge11.pdf

You must either have an AKC registration, or AKC PAL registration to participate.

Please feel free to reach out to me for more info.

  • What days will the Basenjis be coursing? Will there be any entered in veterans or field champion stakes? I am interested in going but the weather has changed up my way and the roads are supposed to be nasty Tuesday night and Wednesday morning-getting rain/sleet/snow-barely above freezing on Wednesday!

Hi Jennifer! We'd love to see you if the weather is better. Not 100% sure how many will be there but I know for sure there is 1 field champion entered and 3 entered in Open. I'm hoping more though!

Coursing is on 4 days but I think the Basenji folks that i know will be there Wed and Thurs, and possibly Friday. the FC I know is leaving Thursday after competing.

Really would like to have you there! Where are you coming from? It will definitely be nicer here and no rain is expected Wed or Thurs.

You can shoot me a private message and I'll give you my cell phone number.

    Mike

  • Mike, thanks for posting the thread. We'll be there on Wed and Thurs and really looking forward to it. Jennifer, Dolce will run open on both days. Looks like the weather will be very nice for coursing. Hope you can make it.

  • The weather has changed for tomorrow-Wednesday-it is now not even going to get above freezing and the roads are supposed to be horrible! I may try to make it for the end of the week but looking doubtful.

  • Any results yet? I'm sorry I couldn't be there. My van still isn't drivable. (And after almost 7 weeks of being homebound, I really needed a day out. sighs) When is the next local coursing?

  • Hey Robyn,

On day 1 Dolce took best of open and Juju won the Fch class uncontested. In the finals Dolce edged Juju for best in breed, her first time taking the title! On day 2 Dolce & Juju again squared off in best of breed with Juju smoking Dolce for the title. I believe Gunner took second in the open class both days and all the dogs ran really well together. On day 2 we had a new entry, Xeva or Xena, sorry not sure of the name certify and we hope she will be a regular at the local coursing events. This dog is related to Dolce in some way, don't ask me how I was in on the periphery of these conversations, but believe she comes from Mary Lou's line somehow.

    Happy New Year,
    Mark, Natalie & Dolce

  • I am very happy that Dolce got a qualifying first and BOB! Thumbs up to Gunner too for picking up some points towards his title, too. :)

My van is drivable now…..barely.....but hopefully I can make it to the next event. I still want to see if Seeley will run.

  • Is anyone entering the GANG trial at the end of January?

  • Hi Lisa, yes, I am going and I know another that is going, which makes 2 Opens. It's possible there may be more as I'm trying to ask around to people I know. The 2 Opens I mentioned, we are only going to be there (as it stands right now) on Saturday and Sunday, not Friday.

Are you thinking about coming? How many B's do you have that would compete, and in what category? The way I see it, the more, the merrier.

This is Gunner's first AKC event, so we actually have to do a test course first when I get there with another B. Shouldn't be a problem since Gunner is certified ASFA at the same location.

Natalie and I will be at the AKC event later this month, but I think we'll only be there on Saturday and Sunday (in Calhoun again). We think there will be more B's, and would love to see you and Seeley out there. Gunner has to get tested, as he's only ASFA certified so far. It also appears that there maybe 2 or 3 others. Keeping fingers crossed! But, if you should need a ride, maybe we can figure something out, because we'd enjoy having you there!

  • We will not be at that one as I don't trust the winter drive in January. That mountain can be scary. Could you post the winners for me for the weekend? Trying to do one final update on YTD stats for the Modern Basenji, which has to be in on 1 Feb and I know the AKC will not get the results posted for two weeks. I have two open and two Fch. Would like to come down in March or April if events do not conflict with dog shows. We did not course too much this year as I was trying to finish the puppies in the ring first. Xander ended up the year as the #13 AKC basenji down from 3 last year.

  • It depends on the weather. My area had great weather this past week-unusually warm but it is drastically changing tomorrow-winter is arriving!

Hi, we live in Knoxville and are interested in getting our newly adopted 2 year old into Lure coursing…wondering if you know if anyone in my area does lure coursing or if Chattanooga would be the closest place?

  • Kristin, thanks for responding! Actually there is some lure coursing in your area. Actually the club is in Kentucky, but this club often courses in Knoxville. Here is some info for you below. I'm actually looking to come up there sometime this year as well when they do. But since it's a relatively short drive, we'd love to see you down here. The lure coursing around here is mostly in Calhoun, Ga and Cartersville, Ga., though there are other locations south and northeast of Atlanta as well. But these first 2 are closer for you (probably about 2 hours or a little more). There are some folks in Knoxville with Whippets that come down all the time.

Anyway, here is the info for your immediate area.

Thank you for the info Mike!!! Hoping this will be a way for her to have fun and keep in top shape!
I will keep the GA courses in mind as well for weekend trips!!!

  • Kristin, glad to hear about your interest. Looking forward to meeting you and your B. As Mike said, we have coursers who come here from Knoxville and we plan to come to Knoxville for coursing sometime. Watch the AKC, GANGcoursing and ASFA sites. They are all .org sites. There you see the calendars of events. Please introduce yourself when you make it down here.

My Basenjis catch and kill wasps and have never got stung in doing so - their snap and release is too quick for them to get stung. However one did get stung on his foot when he trod on a dying bee. Often Basenjis get frightened of a particular thing when they sense their owner's fear. Are you afraid of wasps, Shelley?

Jayden is super gross when it comes to what he'll eat: poop, vomit, and, if he pees on the patio, he'll lick that. Honest!!! We feed him and we feed him very well! Yucccchhhhh! Pat

I don't have the flu but I am home from work today because I am going to get a shot in my foot to kill a nerve. I am nervous beyond words and Chase and Zahra have been cuddled up with me all morning which really has helped to keep me calm. I wonder if the podiatrist would mind them coming into the office with me for the shot? :D

@spitfirekrl1: He doesn't seem to mind much he pretty much ignores it except when she pins him and he ends up on his back. Then he'll start snapping at her face which doesn't seem to steer her away from her objective (we have no idea what that is at this point). When she pins him she wants submission. She wants him to not struggle and nip and he should calm before she lets him go. Momma dogs do this to their puppies, it is part of puppy education. They do it most to the puppies that are the most pushy usually. In our last litter, Zeke always expected to get his way and he was the one who was pinned by both mom and Rio the most. He learned that by submitting he was allowed to go back to play. When he crossed the line, by playing too rough or invading the adults personal space he was pinned. He learned the limits to play and how to behave appropriately with adults from this. The other pups would get the same treatment but less because they didn't push those boundaries as much.
