Basenji sleddogs

Basenji Talk
  • I saw that years ago, tried to find out who they were, but the one I had was the color one. If you find out, let me know! There is another one with just 4 basenji but it was on my old computer and I didn't transfer it (accidentally).

FYI the image shack photo says:
qui a eu cette id?e stupide de changer des basenjis en chiens polaires…je trouve que cela manque de respect et de connaissance de la race
French - detected to English translation
who had this stupid idea to change huskies for Basenjis ... I find this lack of respect and knowledge of the breed

  • I think this is awesome…regardless of what the french guy said (wrote.)..;)

  • I love this picture and all the possibilities that it represents for our breed. It circulates on chat lists from time to time.
If my memory is any good, the owner / musher is Annie Davis, kennel name : "Here Comes Basenjis." Am/Can Ch.Marabasi's Belle of the Ball is the lead dog.
Annie lives in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Last December (2010), her mobile home burned to the ground. At that time she was not doing well physically and still had four Basenjis. That is the last news I can remember.

  • Thanks JoT! Going to see if I can find more with those names!

  • I joined after lurking for awhile just to give you guys this link!

  • Oh wow! I am so happy to learn it is a real, not doctored picture but sad about the owner. :(

  • Yes, I agree..so glad to hear this is a true confimation of how diverse our breed truly is. :)

  • I've often thought that Basenjis would make good sled dogs - as long as any of them didn't spot a rabbit. I have seen this picture lots and often wondered who they were. Thanks for the info, Jo. I do hope that Annie Davis has now recovered

  • Thanks JoT and eeeefarm, I read all the messages on Facebook - and they confirm with JoT. Such a cool idea! =)

  • Great info! Found a few others who do some mushing with Basenji's also. One who uses a cart and 2 who do ski-joring.
I'm moving to Lapland (Swedish part) next month, so will check it out myself then. Going to work with sleddogs, so will try to let Voodoo run in a team and do some ski-joring with him. Think he gonna like that! :D

  • Was looking for the picture and came upon this sad news about Annie Davis:

    http://basenjirescue.blogspot.com/2012/01/four-basenjis.html

  • That's very sad news indeed. Basenjis and cold just do not mix.

  • You know, I'm surprised that I didn't get in on this thread from the very start, I know that picture very well, I may well be one of the people responsible for it being "out there". It's funny, the blog mentions that the picture is from the '70's… nope sorry, 1993 I'd say. The little tri female running in right wheel position (with her head down) was from my first (and only) Basenji litter. She was born June 22,1992. The names of all the dogs are written on the back of the picture but I don't know where it is. I've got 3 views of that Basenji sled team but the one you usually see is the best.

Sad news about Annie though, she was quite the person. First time I saw her was at the Canadian National in '91, she was gaiting (storming) around the ring and I remember thinking, "this woman is serious, don't get in her way". She used to do competitive weight pulling with her Basenjis too.

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

My Basenji Billy is quite undershot; he's a purebred, his bottom jaw just didn't stop growing when it was supposed to. That's okay, I'm a bit of a sucker for a dog with an underbite anyway.:) He was my first rescue Basenji.

@Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).

My Rue is pretty perfect. She is mixed with something (I don't know what) so she doesn't look like a real B… and she isn't interested in anything in our house (chewing wise), doesn't bolt out the door, and licks like CRAZY! She also doesn't really like to play with other dogs at the dog park, she just smells them, occasionally chases them, then comes back and lays down by me (EXERCISE DANG IT!). The only normal B behaviors that I see in her are the little noises that she makes (she makes a lot of them for different reasons) and her BAROOOOOOO (which is fitting because we named her Rue before we even knew she was a Basenji) and it seems like she is stubborn about sitting. It's like she is saying, "yeah I know you want me to sit, but first I'm gonna spin around in a circle. Then maybe I'll sit if I feel like it." Haha! She is a character!

I have found that if I take my B to doggie daycare (even if it's only for half a day), she is ehausted when I bring her home. She will let me do the dishes without any basenji help! She also tends to treat our doggie friends a little nicer when they come around. Having a worn out basenji is deifinitely worth the $15!!

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
