Blotchie noses…

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • my last basenji had a full black nose. now as i am looking a the new 2010 puppies so many of them have white or pinkish blotches on their noses and not the full black - which i prefer. this is probably a superficial preference on my part… does anyone know the "standard"?

Standard calls for black nose… but in Basenjis there is no DQ if it is not. In the winter, many Basenjis get what we call "winter" nose that get light and darken up again in the spring/summer

here is the exact wording from AKC Nose--"Black greatly desired"

I wonder.. how old are the pups on the pictures you are looking at? Because it takes some time for the nose to become fully black.

    Edit.. pics :)

    Puppy nose.. will become black

And older dog with pink in nose..

  • The only one of my 4 that gets the winter nose is my oldest girl. I have her grand daughter and her great grandson and neither of them get the winter nose.

To the OP…Janneke is right about puppies not having full black noses - usually. I have seen 2 that have had the full black nose right from birth and it looks kind of funny - like someone blackened their nose with a marker.

  • I think this older b is lovely, but then, I don't show…

  • "Winter nose" - I'd never heard of that, like so much I've never heard of - but now it explains why my girl's nose is lighter than it used to be. Huh - we keep learning…....

  • Winter nose is common in many breeds. They have attributed it to everything from zinc, food bowls etc on down.

Cara has a black nose but a white area.

NOTE: when she was puppy, part of entire nose white. NOW all outer is black but there is white spot on inside.

  • Interesting. Does anyone know why winter nose happens?

I don't think it gets wintery enough where I'm at to observe any difference…

  • interesting. i guess i have been looking at young puppies whose noses are still pigmenting.
janneke- thanks for the pics. i love a visual aid…specially when the subjects are so adorable!

  • Keep in mind, noses are totally pink when born… and then start to turn black... the more white around the muzzle, the longer it usually takes to fill in.... kind of like Dals, born all white, spots begin to appear between 5 and 10 days... and Tri Basenjis don't start showing their "pips" or brown cheek islands until a few days old

I wonder if its similar to human skin color & in the winter they just have less exposure to the sun & their nose lightens like we become more pale in the winter?

For anyone experiencing similar symptoms, gonna post a recap from today's visit. Vet said that it's very likely to be an allergy, since his symptoms didn't really worsen, other than 2 or 3 breathing difficulty attacks (probably due to extra exposure to the allergen). Chances to be a foreign body stuck in his nasal passage or ear are very slim, because he would've already gotten at least some yellowish/greenish, pus like, nasal discharge and a lot more pawing and overall discomfort. Same goes for kennel cough, but since it has a longer incubation period, he said to keep under supervision for 2-4 more days (should at least get some specific coughing, fever or something related to infections). He said that a blood test would pretty much say nothing in this case, and a lung X-ray is also not needed since he didn't hear anything weird with the stethoscope. He just recommended to stay away as much as possible from grass for now and keep an eye on him. Prescribed Aeurius in case of other breathing attacks. All in all, my boy seems to be getting better. Not much sneazing, other than a few times when taken outside. Nose doesn't seem to be as runy either. And he seems to be getting his energy back, as he wanted to play today. As much as I dislike his zoomies sometimes, I 100% prefer that than not feeling well and laying down, heh.

@debradownsouth The ASPCA is a horrible organization for all animals. Every time legislation is introduced to Ban Horse Slaughter they get in touch with the Reps and Senators and kill the bill. They started by protecting Carriage Horses in New York City but those Carriage Horses are still there suffering. With Dogs they commit fraud with their TV Commercials. They say they are a no kill shelter but they outsource the killing. I did my own investigation into them at the Headquarters on the Upper East Side in Manhattan. I went every day after work for 2 weeks and said I was interested in a small dog. I told them which dog I was interested in but the day after that the dog was gone. It had not been adopted because they said the little Dog was vicious! It was not. they give the Dogs and Cats 7 Days and then they transfer them to a facility that has one purpose: to Euthanize Dogs and Cats. The oils are so diluted that there is no danger of them being made ill. My Mom is a Nurse and we had one Cat who lived to be 25 years old. She knows what she is doing. ASPCA is not a good source because they lie and defraud their donors. A

We did a biopsy a week into it and it was not cancerous, so waiting for the bump to go away was the only other option. I though surgery would be too intrusive in the nose area. Kiya had to endure two weeks of wearing the cone day and night to prevent her from scratching her nose. She seems to get all kinds of things around her nose, just recently she got bitten by a bee nosing around in the grass and was back into the cone for a week.

It sounds like one of my Basenji's (Bungwa) ears. He is losing hair in patches on his ears. I first put it down to him pushing his head through the wire fence but thinking back one of his predecessors had the same but also his nose as you describe. It's a very long time ago and i can't remember how we trated it nor what causes it. I'm off to the vet with him next week for a diagnosis and treatment. I'll be interested to hear what your vet thinks.

I prefer a stick since it will dry much faster. Using a lotion or cream allows your dog to lick it right off which defeats the purpose. Make sure its water proof. A small amount will not harm your dog. I've checked with my vet and others and they all agree. My boy has a section on his nose which is a light pink. Anytime he goes into the sun it turns a bright red. I know its got to be painful. The sunblock has really helped.
