  • Greetings and welcome to the forum! Arleigh is really cute and he has a great spot on the window sill!

  • Bart, what a beautiful B you have. I love the window picture and of course the baroo pic too. Welcome onboard, hope you enjoy the forum as much as I have, I am a newbie too. I have a 6 mo( on july 5th) old Brindle boy named Otis and a new foster named Bana, she is almost 3. So far I love the world of B's…but I have yet to meet the very destructive gene in my dog..I am sure he is in there hiding somewhere though...LOL

  • I am so happy to have found this forum. Most of the people I talk to don't even know what a Basenji is, let alone their cute quirks and behaviors. I usually end up spending over an hour at the vet for just a check up because the vet and her receptionist are the only people I know that have Basenjis. In fact, it is the receptionist that hooked me up with the guy who had Arleigh as a rescue. They are members of B.E.A.R.-Basenji Education and Rescue. It's so great to find info specific to the breed and hear that I'm not the only one that loves them despite their peculiarities. Do you think Golden Retriever owners have as much to talk about??:D

  • Hello and welcome:D

  • Hi Bart! :) From which area in Ohio are you from? What vet do you go to??

  • @BART:

Do you think Golden Retriever owners have as much to talk about??:D

:D I very much doubt it!

  • I live in the Dayton area, my vet is Dr. Tracy Leonard. I was turned on to her by a fellow B owner, whose name I can't recall, shortly after I got my first one. I was walking the dog down a fairly well travelled road and this woman pulled her car over and was so excited to see a Basenji. She, apparently, had 2. We talked for some time and she told me about this vet who raised Basenjis and since I was not all that crazy about the vet we had been to originally (on advise from a co-worker) I took him to Dr. Tracy. Been going to her ever since. Nice lady and great staff. :D:D

  • Great, you got a few pics in your album. Beautiful young boy!

  • Welcome to you and Arleigh. What an interesting name, too!

  • Welcome, and thank you for sharing those adorable pictures.

  • Welcome! I love Arleigh's window seat, he is a very handsome boy. And you are so lucky to be able to go to Dr. Tracy, most of us feel lucky to have a vet that knows what a basenji is.

  • Welcome Bart!

That window shot is a classic:) I think you'll find a bunch of people who share the Basenji curse/passion here:D

:) Good for you - we live about 4 hrs away & I still consider taking our Bs to her. I don't know Dr. Leonard, but I've heard & read nothing but good things about her. It's hard indeed to find a vet with extensive basenji knowledge. I don't know any basenji owners in my immediate area
either, but I'm occasionally approached by people who know what breed of dog I have - always perks me up!

  • Welcome

    Rita Jean

  • Yup, Dr. Tracy is great… known her for years... both as a friend and fellow breeder....

  • Wow! It is a small, world isn't it? I kinda figured some of you would know Doc Tracy but its always nice to have a personal opinion confirmed.

It is a small world… interesting thing is that in Basenjis you will find that most all responsible breeders know each other... maybe not personally, but they have heard about them or know they breedings.

@Rita: Pat yes we did get Jaycee's AKC application at the time we got her. Have not got cert back yet as we were really slow in her name made us slow in mailing. Rita Jean Great, it would be good if you gave Sally W the information for her website to update the pedigrees. Many of us rely heavily on the pedigree site when thinking about breeding and researching dogs…. You can do contact Sally at Zande Basenjis (just do a seach for her website and drop her an email with the info)....

Getting a dog from a responsible breeder is definitely worth the wait and the work to find. At my vet's office we are "the good basenjis". My vet actually sees several basenjis in their practice and the only ones they look forward to seeing are mine. The reason, mine have never tried to bite them, nor are mine shy about being handled, they are healthy. My vet was really upset to have a new client bring in her 8 week old basenji fresh off the airplane, it was terrified of people and had slipping patellas. My mom's vet is considered "the" basenji vet in her area. The majority of his clients have dogs bought from the internet or a local BYB. He became "the" vet because so many of his basenji clients are being treated for a variety of hereditary diseases. He was absolutely shocked when she came in with hers for their first exam. First off, that she was able to provide him with OFA information for both of her dogs plus information on the health of their parents. Secondly, because they were both in really good condition, good muscle tone, no signs of the disorders he so commonly sees. I have much the same experience with dog trainers. There are certain issues that they get used to dealing with because the pups that come to them did not receive as much early socialization. They are pleasantly suprised to see well socialized puppies with good communication skills. So what I am trying to say is that good breeding shows.

Of course you and your beautiful baby are welcome no snobbs here. And I do agree there's a B in there. Your baby is really sweet looking, enjoy. I also have a rescue and believe me they give back a thousand times more then what you give them.

Thanks a lot for your warm welcomings. You can see Dayna's picture under "show off your dog" section. I am trying to go everyone's profile and see the pictures of wonderfull basenjis and basenji mixes.
