Can't hold it anymore - new fancy crate - will Lenny pee in it too?

  • You also might want to get puppy pee pads for easier clean up for you.
When I had the fanconis b…I always kept water for him...he would get frantic if it wasn't where he could get it... just my 2 c.

  • That looks like a great setup.

I second what Sharon says about the pee pads (or paper towels, or newspaper)…give yourself a break so you don't have a ton of laundry. ;):)

Oh, for water, I use hanging flat sided 1qt pails in my kids crates. I think they are $4 each at petedge.com.

  • @tanza:

Do you ever worry about the water dish in there?

Worry about what happening? The dish getting knocked over or them chewing on it? I did at first, and I put the bowl in there until I could get one of the hanging things or hamster type tubes, but the bowl has never been knocked over once…

Yeah, I could put newspaper in there now that it's separate - I tried it before the new floor grate and they just ripped it to shreds - now I guess they can't get to it so it would be a good idea now….

  • I just want to add that reading this thread breaks my heart. Don't ever feel bad about letting out frustration or being upset. Being a caregiver (whether for a sick pet or sick human) is exhausting both mentally and physically. And when you can't take part in things you love (traveling, etc.), it makes any normal person resentful at times.

We all know…Tayda is lucky to have such a loving and caring mom! :)

  • It looks like the suspended floor is going to work perfectly! They look so content -cute picture of T&L. They look like they're thinking, "So what's the problem Mom? This is good!" :)

Yes, worrying about being knocked over… and they sell the hanging ones (like the one I got for Mickii) for larger(dogs) animals. It took her about 2 minutes to figure out how to use it.

  • Yes, we have wonderful 'bolt on bowls' for in the travel crates. We got them at Wal-Mart, I think they were under $10. I was afraid that our dogs might not 'get' the whole bottle thing. Besides that, the ones I had for rabbits and such ALWAYS leaked, and I didn't want the dogs to have lie in a puddle, so…the bowls were a find for us.

We have the kind that hang on the sides also, and for much the same reason.
    They're easy, don't leak, don't spill, etc.
    They work very well.

  • Wow - so I guess it's unusual that Tayda and Lenny don't make a mess with the bowl? It's never spilled or even moved from it's original spot!

I don't know. I don't think mine would spill. I got the hanging kind so there'd be more room on the bottom of the crate for them, not because they were spilling from the regular bowl.

  • Ok, well I went to the pet store at lunch and got them a hanging bowl for their crate! You guys convinced me! :)

I'm also reverting back to the Wellness Core - it is the only food that Tayda would ever eat willingly. I think she's been revolting against me because Lenny gets to still eat it and she doesn't. Gotta keep those BUN/CREATININE numbers down but I figure I'll give her the Wellness core and cut it with other veggies and non-protein things so that overall her meal is still "lower" protein.

    She wins - again.

  • Bless your heart, don't worry about sounding bad for being frustrated… I know you love Tayda, it's just difficult when dealing with an illness.

The crate idea is a good one.:D I wish Bella would learn not to wet her crate... sometimes she will even do it the minute I turn my back after putting her in there! I don't know what she would do if I put her bed in there and set up an arrangement like yours. I wonder if she would even pee on the bed???

Right now I am putting the fleece blankets in there and washing them all the time... Does that grate remove easily so I could fold up the crate when we travel? How much does it cost and where do you get them?

I got the one I have off of Amazon.com. It's for a crate that is 36" long by 24" wide:

    http://www.amazon.com/MidWest-Floor-Carry-Homes-Crates-FG36A/dp/B001JI4UYE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1244230911&sr=8-1

It was around $40 after you added in shipping. It does remove easily - you just fold out one of the end panels and it comes right out.

  • Thanks, I bookmarked the page… How's it working for ya?!?!?

  • Well it's been a few months now that we've been using the new system w/ the floor grate and it works great! I got waterproof covers for the pillows so if she pees in the crate it spills through the grates and they don't have to sit in it! I replaced the towels in the bottom part with newspapers and it takes 20 seconds to slide the tray out, fold up the wet paper, throw it away and re-line the tray with more newspaper.

    It's great. yay

  • Michelle, that is fantastic. I'm happy that it is a little easier on you…Tayda is lucky to have such a great owner!

One other note about chest 'dropping' (and why did dog people start using that term - it sort of conjurs up visions of dog parts falling off in the yard) One the the biggest problems in basenjis fronts right now is those that are too narrow and have a concave area between the front legs. I'm NOT advocating a front like a bull terrier but there needs to be some 'fill' there to have a good front but it's not the fill it is the actual structure of the bones in the shoulder and upper arm that - if not correct- actally pull the 'front' too far forward. A quick visual scan from the side - if the deepest part of the brisket is well behind the legs - the front is too far forward. We need to pay attention to the actual shoulder structure to make sure we are not continuing to double up on dogs with a short upper arm. That limits front reach, and creates a not efficient side gait. So go catch your dogs and do a quick check - measure from the top of the wither to the point of shoulder (the most prominant bone in the chest.) then from that point to the point of the elbow. They should be the same. if they are not - stand up your dog and put your hand between the front legs - if you hand is IN FRONT OF THE FRONT LEGS - great - if your hand is between the front legs the front on your dog is too far foward. More than you ever wanted to know probably - LOL

Dale Are you using Vetsulin insulin???? I had problems regulating my 13yo male. Come to find out, the FDA has warned vets to change dogs over to a different kind of insulin. Has something to do with the release time of the crystalline portion of the drug. We had the WORST time at first giving shots,( and I'm a certified phlebotomist and went thru nursing school) My boy was fine at the vets we they did it…..difference is he was up on the exam table. We got a table for Einstein, put a bath mat on it so he wouldn't slip around. Biggest thing that helped was getting BD needles, the ones that come from the vets are carp-ola, they have burrs etc...the only thing you have to do is change the number of units you use.(if your using Vetsulin U40 compared to U100 for human insulin and BD needles.) I can explain in further detail if you want. It did take both myself and my husband to get him used to the shots, be we had a very specific routine that we did not alter. Einstein knew that after he ate it was "time for his medicine" he would run over to his table and try to jump up there himself. If we were taking too long, he'd come get us. Freezed Dried Liver was used to get him on the table, then when he was done, given while he was still on the table. I made sure he could see the liver. When he was done and off the table, he got his (small) KONG filled with fat free cream cheese mixed with some tuna mmmmmmmm. My little puppy-cat loved tuna. Anyway, I went from crying during the shot, to smiling and laughing 'cause he was so funny trying to get on the table, and then doing his little dance when he got his kong. I really think the table helped... Please let me know if I can help any more, I can describe the contraption (sp) I built on top of his metal crate, so I could give the shot by myself when needed. He didn't seeem to mind getting the shots at all, I think he trusted and knew we would never do anything to hurt him, plus we made a HUGE DEAL out of telling him what a good boy he was....etc......people would have thought we were bananas LOL Good Luck PJ

@Quercus: I don't know if this is at all accurate…but his theory made sense to me. Also, some Bs are prone to crystal formation, but often don't develop a full blown UTI. There is something that some folks add to the water to change the PH of the urine, but I don't remember what...maybe someone else can help me out with that. I was told that crystals were a sign and led to kidney stones?–not necessarily a sign of UTIs? There were special dog foods for this--to keep crystals from forming because I had to use one at one time (this was about 10-12 years ago), but my vet told me that the good quality dog foods now are formulated to avoid crystal formation, so you don't usually have to get special food.

Well his coat is finally coming in nicely and his shedding has lessened although still sheds. He loves his new food IVD especially since daddy heats it up for him. I guess it was the allergies and the season.
