Rare Sighting!

Basenji Talk

  • This may not be a big deal to most, but I was driving with my son from town and on the way home, my son pointed out a couple walking a red & white Basenji. He was walking so nice and proud. I slowed down and rubber necked as long as I could. :o This is the 1st time ever that I've seen a Basenji in my hometown. Such a rare sighting.

  • I know exactly how you feel. I've seen one person walk a red/white once and I saw one pup at a puppy store (I went just 'cause I knew he was there). There is a breeder in a nearby city, and I've heard about a bunch more owners, but have never seen any of them. This is surprising because we only have one dog park, which I frequent.

Maybe you'll see them more often and yours will meet a new friend. :)

  • I know what you mean, also. My work can take me to towns/cities 2 hrs away & I have yet to see another B.

  • It sure is weird isn't it? I ran into someone with their little puppy at Tractor Supply a few years ago.

  • I have only ever seen one basenji out in public here…since I was a kid and my brother had one...and, well, that was a LONG time ago :). There is a 60ish man in Portland that has a black & white (first time I had ever seen a b&w) one and I have seen him on occasion...although, not since I've been collecting my own basenjis :D. Once I was walking and he came around the corner and I said, "oh, a basenji" and he wanted to talk to me because no one ever knew what kind of dog he had. :D

I just found out that the woman that does fostering for BRAT in Maine, lives less than 3 miles from my house and runs a doggie day care there as well. Knew about the doggie day care, but not the basenji link, so I'm stopping in there on Friday on my day off. So random.

  • Where are you located in Michigan? I am in the Lansing area. I have seen a few B's over the years and each time I rubber-necked and then pulled the car over to jump out and talk to the person. I probably look like a loon, but I can't help myself with B's!

Hi Linda from Lansing. We're in Livonia! I wanted to pull over - but didn't because of the thought I'd look like a loon too! Next time I will, if I ever get another opportunity. The few times I've seen other Basenjis was by intention - a plan to meet up with a couple owners through this forum and at Pet shows.

Blue happens when there is an absence of red pigment. Some breeders try for them - Nocturnals for one. I think there was a move towards 'mahogany' too, a couple of years back.

I don't think it's a Basenji or even a mix.. only because according to AKC the first litter of Basenji puppies raised to maturity was in 1941, so it was a very new breed to our country at that time! It's a very cute dog regardless!! I can see where it can be mistaken for a Basenji mix with those adorable ears! I would love to see these pictures enhanced/in color. Very interesting find! =)

Interesting, I email a person on nextdaypets about their Basenjis for sale, and to their credit they did do Fanconi testing.. however their puppy prices are based on color… I asked her how come and she said that the color that sells the faster is the highest price.. sigh... so much breeding to improve the breed.... and not for a cash "crop"
