What breed makes a good match with the basenji?

Basenji Talk
  • Ok.. My first choice would be another b. But we also like a lot of other breeds :)
We don't want a dog that's too big.. So no dobermann for us ;) Also no fluffy hamsters.
I'm not really a pug-person.. so sorry.. no pug.. :D
We're not looking for a dog to tire Tillo out. Just a companion.. We will tire them out :D
And we like sporty, natural looking (no short noses etc) dogs.
    This is hard..

  • Medium size, low grooming, sporty, natural looking - I think you just described a Basenji!

I guess I would ask, if you don't have another breed in mind, are you really sure you don't want another basenji? Truly your criteria matches basenji though there are some other breeds that could also be a fit, like a whippet.

  • Are you thinking of a specific group? I know your classifications are completely different over there.

If (If!!) Liz and I were to get into another breed….I can say with 75% certainty it would come from the (sight)hound group. With all the coursing we spend more time around those breeds than any other group.

    :D I did describe a basenji, didn't I? :D
I like whippets as well.. but I always have a problem with their heads being not so friendly.. (this does depend on their colloring/marking)

There is one problem with adding a b-puppy.. the period when they are born, doesn't fit my lifestyle at the moment.. And BF has some doubts.

We have a sighthound group and a spitz/primitive dog group. I like both groups! (love salukis etc :D)

  • Have you considered a Vizsla? They're wonderful!! I find them a great match with/for my B's. They are similar in personality as well.

  • both of the malinois i've had get a long great with the basenjis. my basenjis do like to defuzz hairy dogs, but otherwise I'd say any breed could do fine with your basenji. i think it has more to do with individuals.

  • What about a dalmatian? Sporty, handsome dogs…

  • What about a Cirneco dell'Etna? I've seen a number of them lure coursing. Similar in size to a basenji, not as big as a Pharoah Hound.

  • @BDawg:

I think dobies are good matches. ;) Ayda always kept Lexi in line– It was really funny!

AH My two FAVORITE breeds!!!! That's a combo I would LOVE to have!

  • Fox terrier or Jack Russell terrier?

  • We just adopted a puerto rican rescue dog from our friends. She and my B are best friends, but unfortunately she didn't get along with our friends other dog. They seem to be a perfect match; almost the same size, close to the same activity level, they even have similar coloring.

  • We have thought about this too. No matter how hard we try to entertain other ideas we always come back to a basenji.

  • De nova scotia is one of my favorites too, but i won't get one because it's very very lot of work to have one. With a Toller you have to work, every day a few hours. I think it's hard to have a Toller that has to go to a nanny during the day.

A pharao is a lot lika a B, a bit more nervous and very much in love with their owners, not a breed that can be allone a lot.

I LOVEEE Sighthounds, my two nm1 breeds are the Basenji and the Saluki.
We cant have a (full) sighthound because of our run free time during days.
Sighthound are really some special caracters, not just dogs and even not like a Basenji.
With a sighthound you have to be so very carefull, if they aren't understood by their owner they are not happy during their lives.
They're nog just dogs you can put in a crate or, to be bossed around.

Maybe you think of anoter B??? hihihihi
Or someting like a terrier?(jack russel, miniature bullterrier, etc)
Did you know the breed Cirneco dell etna? Lika a pharao dog but in caracter more like a Basenji and a bit smaller.

I know the Cirneco dell' Etna.. don't know what I think of them.. I'm not really a jack russell/bullterrier person :)

Maybe just another B :D Then I only have to choose between breeders… And.. between girl/boy..

BTW: how did Chafuko do at Eindhoven???

  • I've considered adding to my pack with another Basenji. However, if my DBF sticks around, we have been talking about getting a lab instead & just fostering Basenjis. :) Dallas has played with our friends lab & always gets along very well with him…also ends up crashing out from being exhausted! Haha. That's a plus in my book!

Good luck with whatever breed you decide to get! :)

I love the look of the Cirneco… but I hear they are terrible diggers.... worst then "foxes"...... Love Parson Russell's.... but they are very high maintance.... in most cases, more that B's....

    .

I ran into a man with a Saluki last year while walking Lenny and Tayda. I had never seen or heard of one before and it was so beautiful! Boy can that thing RUN!!! We went into a tennis court and the guy let his Saluki off leash and it RAN like the wind. I've never seen anything like it. - i really wanted to let my two Bs off to see if Lenny would give it a run for its money, but of course, Lenny was acting like he wanted to kill the Saluki so the leash stayed on and we just watched the Saluki run. It was one of the long haired ones - such a graceful gait and with the long flowing hair - so beautiful!

  • I have an American Eskimo, German Shep, Jack Russell/mix, and two Basenjis.
They all get along well. The Basenjis are 1 and 2 years old, and their favorite playmate is the old Shep female. They climb on her, pull her tail, sleep next to her, and try to get her to chase them around the yard while they run under her and jump over her body…the old girl loves them. The Basenjis and the Terrier are close in age, they all sleep together, fight and bicker together, play together, and even share food. The Eski is a 13 yr old male...he loves the Basenjis and is always interested in watching their antics. The "family" seems pretty content with one another. All five dogs have been adopted. Three were rescued and two were abandoned in my neighborhood.

  • I had never heard of the Cirneco, so looked them up. Very nice looking little dog, looks like a small Pharoah hound, to my inexperienced eye. Might make a lovely partner for a basenji.

My mix is just a little shorter, and there's a similar thread going on here right now. As I say in that one, only DNA can tell you. https://basenjiforums.com/topic/14838/i-know-you-are-tired-of-being-asked/5 -Joanne

Actually, I think all the Breed All About its are 30 minute shows, so probably 22-24 minutes of content. We have done a search on any new DVR we have gotten and always keep it on there. One of our dogs goes crazy any time we put it on, it is hilarious.

@Andrew: Thank you…. I think I have officially gone Basenji crazy. My boyfriend teases me because I have taken over "his" dog, "his" username, and "his" love & gone two steps farther. He wanted a basenji because he had a mix growing up, and I was very leary. But now I have fallen head over heels in love with our dog... I plan my day around trips to the park, budget money just to buy him treats & toys, think of silly games to play with him to make him happy, etc. Thank you for the resources! I'm tired of all the same old reading about Basenjis on the internet (the Basenji is a barkless dog... always alert... blah blah blah). Now I want to REALLY learn about them. And there are many of us here that will be happy to answer questions for your too!
