My dog is always the alpha when I'm out walking her. Sometimes drives me crazy! A trainer suggested that i put her in a harness that has a center front loop on it, that is found at her chest. Then, when she tries to lunge forward, the action spins the dog around! Works like a charm. Otherwise, when I have her on her normal harness, she wants to pull away and we're off to the Iditarod. So, after 4 yrs, I'm always cautious when other dogs approach. My girl does mellow out after a minute or so, but if another dog is off leash and runs up to her and she doesn't know the other dog, the bell rings and it's round one! Fortunately, even the big dogs back off quickly. Good arm exercise! (she's always on leash, or else she's off for an adventure, with or without me!) But the center front loop harness works the best for control. Hope this helps

RE: Basenji - the second dumbest dog breed
I am a musician and I spend a lot of time reviewing music. This means I'll be sitting at my computer, headphones on listening to a song and unaware of the outside world. My girl sunshine knows that when the phone rings, I'm supposed to answer it. So when it rings and I'm on the computer with the headphones on, she'll run up to me and "bark" in her way and jump on me to alert me to the phone. She'll then run ahead of me to the phone and watch me as I answer it. She'll also alert me when the doorbell rings or someone in the household yells for me. This she learned all on her own. Dumb dog? Who are they kidding! (to CBS, here's a major rasberry call just for you! thhhhhhhhhhhhh)

Fun and Games
Thought it might be fun to talk about games that people play with their B's
This is a game called "silly girl" I tell her she's being silly and she starts burrowing under the covers to attack me from under the blankets. She'll keep going until she finds the other side of her "tunnel"! Usually happens when I'm a bit slow getting my shoes on after she convinces me it's time for a walk -
RE: Who has the largest Basenji
My girl Sunshine is 38lbs and 20+ inches at the withers!

RE: Tail wagging
My dog's tail is wagging most all of the time! Doesn't curl tightly but looks most like a big question mark. She'll wag it when she's standing, sitting, or laying down and sometimes spins it like a propeller when stalking squirrels.

RE: My B's Pick & Choose Which Kibbles to Eat Out of Their Food! Grrrr!
Mine was a bit picky at first. Didn't like this or that. She does like to eat an occasion green olive W/the pimento pit, though! As for kibbles, I tried her with some of the Kibbles and Bits brushing bites brand and she loves the stuff. Not picky with that at all! I gave her some of the reg Kibbles, and she was picky there. She tried iams dry once when I first got her that my sister swore by, and didn't take to that at all.

RE: My Moselle and me!!
Before I got my dog, I always had labs or lab mixed big dogs. Even though mine is a bit big as basenjis go, she still looks like a shrimp to me. Unbelievably fun dog. You made a good choice with this one, and the fun is just starting for you!

This is Sunshine
I got Sunshine (her kennel name, but it's where she like's to be so I kept it) from Max fund as a rescued dog from the Katrina disaster. That was two yrs ago, and I think she pretty well has me trained by now. She's a big girl at 35lbs and 20+ in tall and has a bit of a bark, so maybe there's some mix in her?
She loves to play and will even fetch, almost. The game is I throw the tennis ball, she chases it until it stops, and then runs back to me. The game lasts as long as I have another ball to throw, or unless a squirrel happens to climb on to the fence or something else walks by outside the fence. Some of her other passions are sleeping next to me in bed or on the couch or wherever else I happen to be! Oh well. Guess you can see her for yourself!!
