    Why would she not want him to go to class? This is pretty critical, IMO for any new puppy owner and puppy….

    She told me in her life she has trained many dogs, and she is confident in her ability. Idk maybe I should just try her way, and if it doesn't progress I'll convince her to go to puppy training.

    As others have said, the puppy socialization class is not about "training" as much as making sure the puppy has a healthy relationship with other dogs and people as well.

    As some of you know I am getting a tri basenji boy soon… My mom already has a teacup poodle. He is sooo small. I swear they are going to be the same size when I bring him home lol.

    An 8 week old Basenji is going to be larger and heavier than a Poodle that size. If the Basenji pup gets a bit carried away with its playing and the Poodle doesn't put him in his place for his rudeness, you may have to intervene. A "time out" for the pup may be warranted.

    I do agree with the others that puppy classes are fabulous for socializing your puppy. It is best to meet the trainer and watch them teach a class before you sign up and commit to going. You want to make sure that you agree with their methods and that you will be able to follow their lead. Good luck!

    I just found out that The Ohio State University has puppy classes. Like nine days after I get him. I think this will be good, because OSU is one of the top vet programs in the country! :)

    True puppy class is about helping your dog be social, but "training" well, its IMO different from training any other breeds.
    The EBC club has a manual, Basenji Owners Manual that is very helpful for the first time owner.
    I do believe its listed on this site.
    I would sure recommend it.

    Yeah I have read up on some info about basenji's for awhile, and tomorrow I am going to Borders and buying Basenjis: Complete Pet Owners Manual. How do I order the Basenji Owners Manual? I found the website, but it does not direct you to ordering it.

    I want to tell you that you do NOT get chances to 'do over' typically with this breed - it is very much easier to start right from the beginning than to try to redo or fix. Call it puppy socialization to your mom instead then she can work on some one-to-one stuff too. Anyone that has a basenji or any training center that has worked with them will tell you - this is a unique breed and they will not respond in a way you expect.

    You have to decide though - to let your mother with her undersize poodle train this dog in spite of having no real experience - or believe us heck between tanzia and I alone I think there's 50 years of experience there - factore in Lisa and Robyn etc and we might even be over 100. I'm pretty sure we do know what we are talking about.

    And something else to consider - is your mom up to date with the latest training methods? Training has changed a LOT in the last 10 years or so. I'm always trying to get more info on training. I've put over 20 titles on one basenji and I'm still trying desparately to learn new/better ways of doing things for my 2 year old.

    The Basenji Club of Southern Wisconsin has a book too. You can get it on their website and pay with Paypal if you are more comfortable with that. Similarly, I think it was developed with the help of people long-familiar with basenjis. I have not read the one that Sharron is recommending so I can't compare the two but the topics of discusion are similar.     In my opinion I would bring the pup to class . I have always said i regret not taken phoenix in when i got him {9mths} I did go to puppy class with Denver my r+w and it made a BIG, HUGE difference. Not to mention ur getting a Tri . I say instead of TRI standing for three colors {what it really means in basenji owners is .. TRY NOT TO LOSS UR MIND } LOL

    I am so glad that You, your husband and Cricket are OK. You're lucky the bull mastiff did not attack your husband, Im surprised he did not, actually. I have had this happen to me so many times to our dogs. Thankfully it always ends up bad for the other dog/dogs. They go into fight mode right away, which does not make them great at meeting other dogs, but after this happening so many times, I don't trust the other dogs either. If I just have one dog with me, I scoop him up in my arms and that has worked well so far.

    I have had a couple stained glass made, but there is normally a 3-4 month lead time as the artists are already booked up for Xmas this yr. Most of the artists on etsy will be booked this late in the yr, I had two quilts and a needle felt made a couple yrs ago and I placed my order in June in order to guarantee Xmas delivery. If you have a nice photo, there is a company called treasure knits that does wonderful woven afghans out of a photo with about a one week turn around. I have had both afghans and pillows made from photos as xmas gifts from them and they do great work.

    $2000.00 for astro turf!!! Wow! I've seen that short green carpet which looks like grass and that works really well. I don't think its called astro turf though since it is much shorter. You can find it at camping stores or even Home Depo. Its not really that expensive and it is easy to clean with a hose.

    hi sorry for the situation!!, but the pit bull was trying to be aggressive !!. and if not , they tent to be very alpha towards other dogs. the owner needs to get help with there pit because it's going to go into aggressive mode and really hurt another animal!. get apple spray and keep it with you!. it might help but once in that mode with a pit bull it's hard to get them out of that mode too!. if you have this happen again try to grab the pitt BY THE SIDE OF THE MOUTH !!. THIS DOES TEND TO HELP THEM LET GO.

    Yes I agree Pat, Fort Funston could get very crowded and dangerous for smaller dogs as packs of bigger dogs playing could cause injury. My 2 Basenjis were very good and stayed pretty close to me and got used to the crowds. The only problem I had there was with this lady who had an older Tri color female Basenji. It would bite my blk/wht, Nika who was 1-1/2 on the butt. A few times of that and I stayed way away from her. The problem is Nika was a very playful girl and never did anything like that. A few times of getting nipped on the butt started her doing it to other dogs and Basenjis. A Basenji would want to play and Nika would chase and give a nip and the the other dog would get mad and a fight would occur. Nobody would ever get hurt thankfully. It was rare that it would happen as I took them there for 9 years, mostly on the weekend without problem. We had a lot of fun and people loved the Basenjis! Ringo, the red/wht was a very entertaining clown when we'd go down to the beach.

    Hi there. At the moment I have a little girl. I'm considering getting her a brother or sister. There's no doubt I would go for another Basenji. Problem is, I don't want a new dog to teach her bad habits. My girl doesn' t know she can jump the back fence. She doesn't dig holes in the back lawn, only in the garden beds, which I 'm pretty sure she's running out of room to bury her treats. And she can be pretty smart when she wants to. Do I risk bringing a puppy into the family and my girl picking up bad puppy habits?
