Making dehydrated treats

    I won't buy dog treats because so many are being manufactured in China.
    I bought an Exhaliber food dehydrator and have been making dog treats.
    The dogs love them. So far I've dried chicken breast meat, chicken gizzards and hearts, calf liver, and am going to try other lean meats. The cost of the treats is less, I know exactly what they are eating, and don't worry any more.

    How neat! You can make really lean beef, turkey, chicken jerky with that too, huh? Great way to sneak in protein.

    I make my own too. I just slice chicken breast thin, put it on a cookie cooling rack and in the oven at 150 for 4 hours (or so), turning once.

    Hello everyone…I'm so happy to have found this web site.
    I pet sit and one of my clients foster cares a breed of dogs. She left chicken jerky strips that were "homemade" rather than trusting manufacturers. I ordered an Excaliber Food Dehydrator from Amazon that day. I can't believe the wonderful quality of the treats I'm able to make. Today, I'm making sweet potato treats for the dogs and me. I garden so the dehydrator has been great for peppers and tomatoes, too.

    What a great idea. I already have a dehydrator (I dry my apples, tomatoes, etc for myself) and it has receipes for making jerky. I'll have to try making some dog treats now.

    The recipe for jerky calls for salt as a preservative, you can avoid the extra salt for the dogs by drying the meat and then refrigerating it.

    I dehydrated chicken gizzards and hearts…that is their favorite.

    I have a food dehydrator and i make soy sauce beef jerky. OH MY GOSH! its sooo good. Missy goes CRAZY for it! I can only give her so much tho because of the salt. but i never thought about doing that for dogs! Great idea! Ill have to start doing that!

    I wash the sweet potatoes first then dry them off very well, depending on how thick you cut them will determined either how crisp or how chewy they will come out. I do not put anything on my potatoes at all. I slice mine about 1/8 of a inch thick and then dehydrate them for the dogs. I than keep them in a zip lock bad in the fridge.
    The thicker you slice them the more chewy they are. It takes mine about 12 to 14 hours to get to the point where my dogs like them.
    You'll have to just test times to see where you want them for your dog.

    Well after waiting a bit, I finally got the salmon ears http://www.salmonears.com/products.html today. I was wiped out, going to take a nap, thought– let me give them one so they are happy. Big mistake. They first were like "wth?" Then, they went wild. They ate one, would not stop scenting and looking for more. I had to make them get under the covers. They got up. They searched the bed, the floor, they scented. I gave up, got up, got another and took pics. I am going to place an order for 2 friends I had TOLD I'd share a few of mine with. Um, no. Not sharing mine. Until now, their fave thing has been the dried Canyon chicken breast jerky or Waggin trains. Since both from China, stopped them. They will eat any treat, but those made them happy. Guess what? They are happy again. Will they work for training? There are large and small sizes. I am going to use the small for training, but the big ones created very very happy dogs.

    We had organic peanuts (in the shell) this weekend at family camping and a few of them were dropped. Kentucky was brillant enough to learn how to take the nuts out of the shell and take the skin off them. It was amazing watching him hunt for the nuts.

    I give uncooked meaty bones 3 times a week to my Duna, The ones you use for the broth or meat soups and i get them from my local butcher that puts them away for me when i do the weekly meat shopping. Natural meaty bones are always the best!

    In Australia, (especially in Tasmania :rolleyes:), we have none of the brands of dog food that you guys are talking about… We feed a premium dry food to our 2 B's, in the morning, which I might add, neither eat much of :). In the evening they get dry with a little wet food mixed in, also warmed up. Both of them get a 1000mg Omega 3 capsule, and the difference in their coat is incredible. Both had quite dry, flakey, scurfy coats, and our Vet suggested this, and I couldnt be happier with the results. Im new to the breed, and my mentor lives interstate, so all that I am doing, is trial and error ;). Just a couple of weeks ago, I was showing Ochre, and the judge was going over her coat, again and again, on the table... I was thinking she didnt like her coat, and was dreading what she might say to me !!! I was pleasantly surprised when she actually said that Ochre had the most correct coat that she had touched in the last 12-18 months :D. Thankfully the sun was out, just long enough for the B judging, and she literally glistened in the sunshine. This judge also commented on her bright whites, and shiny red colouring. She said, I dont know what you are doing with her coat, but, please keep it up... I was over the moon with these comments :).

    Hollie and I have made another trip to the local dog bakery. No more treats that aren't homemade. I am attempting to cook for her too. It's more work, but definately worth the trouble.
